My brother got caught in the early-build-up hype last time around (Vanguard).

The old school style mmo crowd that wants it hard and needing others does still exist. Maybe they're even big enough to support a single game well if you could get them all playing it.

Once you start splintering them into pvp or not... heavy guild required for endgame or not... you start losing people.

I'll add that the people most likely to want to play an old-vision style game are probably running older rigs. Vanguard missed out on a bunch of players I knew at launch because they couldn't get the game to run... so they went back to EQ and other "old" things.

Supposing this thing actually makes it live... will it have learned any of the lessons of Vanguard, Warhammer and such that held so much promise but couldn't retain serious population?

I can still remeber the hype around that game. Wasnt it Verant at the head of it, then didnt SOE buy it out from under them again like they did EQ or something been a while since i thought about Vanguard? I didnt get much of a chance to play the game. but is FTP now so maybe take a peek if they still have servers.

or maybe i dont know what the hell im talking about lol Smiley: sly

"There's no going home."

The original Everquest experience may be fondly remembered, talked about at length with fellow aficionados and extolled as the ultimate challenging MMORPG immersive experience but there's no going back, IMO. Honestly, the closest thing by far is the emu server whose name may not be spoken on these forums. Things like that and the legit progression servers provide a pale but nonetheless apparent simulation of the original experience but this is because they're derived from the original CONTENT. What made the EQ of 1999-2001 so memorable was a unrepeatable combination of the CONTENT and our own NOOBINESS (if that isn't a word, I coin it now lol) in playing that content the first time around. By 2014 we've all had too much experience with games, on-line content and computers to be able really to relive those magic days.

Although, five or six years from now, when this project goes beta, if it ever does, I'd give it a shot. :)

The problems I have with any new games like many people will be what will be the kind of system needed to run it: a lot of people do not have the luxury to go out buy a new system just for a game, I am also limited to 4g full speed of 5 gig data cap a month through my cell phone provider. Then the game starts off with promise, a big crowd, a lot of hype then turns into a waste of time, money and ends up being a failure.

Speaking of Vanguard I could never get past the character select screen no matter which name I chose would say already taken or boot me off, plus it looked like a lot of the same graphics, style as of eq 2 which I lost intrest on that fast.

No that is pretty much it in a nutshell...played it again about a year ago, and it is now a pretty cool game...I like EQ better, but I really did get into it. Has a lot of buggy area's still, but some interesting mechanics, quests, spells and the like...can be tough to solo in, but not impossible. Give it a try if the servers are still up...

I tried Rift for a while(highest is 30 something with many alts) and i was playing LOTRO(highest is low 40s with a few alts)at launch. And i still play those 2 games from time to time. Same thing with EQ2 I played that at launch and ive been craving some of that too lol. WTF is wrong with me.Smiley: eek

Actually, close. McQuaid started his own company for Vanguard and Microsoft signed on to publish. Or Microsoft bought the game when Sigil (the company Mcquaid started) crashed and burnt. Then to everyone's surprise he went back under the SOE banner when they stepped in to save the day. And I am sure you have all heard the story of the opiate addiction and other trainwrecks that cause all the problems. Hence, the game failed to deliver on the promise us fans saw in it.

Also, contrary to popular belief, EQ was ALWAYS an SOE game. Verant was a subsidiary of Sony which got folded in. If I remember correctly ( it has been a while and I would have to google this part) it was originally being done by Sony's 989 studio, but they created the Verant lable to spin it out. If that is correct I imagine it was to separate it from the sports games 989 was mostly known for. Maybe its because for years I believed all the people who screamed about Sony "ruining" the gameVerant had made until I read the truth in an interview with Smedley, but it drives me crazy when people continue to perpetuate that myth today. The only thing that changed was the name on the box. It was the same people making the decisions. The same, company anyway. I am sure people came and went over the years but it was always Smed's baby. Basically Verant=SOE as far as EQ is concerned.

Sorry for the minor derail, but the OCD in me always tries to let people know the truth regarding that very popular misconception.

It's ironic that some of the above posters worry that this game will be a problem to play because of needing to upgrade one's system to handle the higher demand of the game code. It's ironic because part of the attraction of the original EQ was its rather simplistic and (by current standards) now outdated design. If this new game is going to look just like Wow or EQ2, but just with much harder quests, slower leveling, serious penalties for dying, etc. I fear it will appeal to NOBODY: not old-timers longing for the original experience nor new players accustomed to cutting edge graphics AND CareBear leveling.

I tend to agree...Aion was a brutal grind at the outset ( very similar to the original EQ, I felt ), and people bailed ( that, and the horrible spam gold sellers...Smiley: oyvey ) I loved the mechanics of that game, pretty cool quests, etc... didn't mind the grind cause I had no time table. But people fled when they found it was hard and couldn't be cap in a day....

We sometimes like to "wax nostalgic ' about old EQ, but while it was amazing for the time, I am glad it has updated itself, and I truly enjoy it now more than 99...I think if it was that same grind, it would have died already.

Kinda true, but also not completely true. The design of EQ started under SOE (then called SISA). Sony renamed SISA into 989 Studios and decided it would only develop console games. The online computer portion of the business was spun off and became Verant Interactive. So when EQ was released Verant was actually an independent company. It had ties to Sony, but was not under direct Sony management or direction (and was financially separated as well).

In 2000 Sony reacquired Verant and incorporated it into the SOE label we know today. So while the original design team did originally work for Sony, they had been released from Sony's direct control for a year or so prior to the release of EQ and had pretty free reign with its development for the first year of its run. So when people complained about Sony "buying VI" and changing things, they weren't wholly wrong. Whether there was actually any significant change in terms of the game design and direction based on the relationship between Sony and Verant is completely up to speculation IMO.

However when Smedley made a big point about how EQ was always a Sony product, he was actually fibbing a bit. But just a little bit.

As long as we all remember that the original name of Qeynos was not Tnarev...

...the universe will stay in balance or something.

[spell them backwards, just in case someone doesn't know or have time to read epic old threads like this one that have that kind of info. I couldn't find the shorter one that just listed funny names in EQ.

You touched a nerve.

"You can't go back home to your family, back home to your childhood, ... back home to a young man's dreams of glory and of fame ... back home to places in the country, back home to the old forms and systems of things which once seemed everlasting but which are changing all the time-back home to the escapes of Time and Memory."
