Race and class combo clash is finally over, see the link below to see who won!

My favorite actually won! i'm excited. I'm most surely going to be creating this race/class combination when it comes out. Something i kinda always wanted..
Now... I wonder about the details... but its cool!

What are your thoughts?

I feel out of all the choices that this is one of the ones that made sense. I know wood elf is supposed to gentle and people say they arent fierce enough. But they are druids and rangers and are very much in touch with nature. i know you could make the same argument for halflings too but they would get eaten by their warders :p
I also felt the DE ranger made sense as well. It was at least the lore in Forgotten Realms that Dark Elves could be rangers, and with wood elves and half elves being rangers i dont see why not dark elves.

What i dont understand is the other new class/race combo maybe someone can enlighten me with the background? Froglok monks wtf? Better than gnome monks i suppose as was some of the ramblings on other forums and other people on here. Gnome monk is way out of line imo, just doesnt compute.

Out of sheer whimsey, I rather liked the idea of a DE Bard.

However, from a lore perspective, the Iksar Berserker made the most sense.

WE BL is just...weird. But, expect weird results when humans are allowed to vote.

Wood elf beastlord is the first ever beastlord that isnt a Large race. I'm happy about that. I dont like my char being too large on the screen, so Vah shir is practically the biggest thing i can enjoy playing.

I've played both Vah shir and Iksar beastlord quite heavily. It'll be nice to be able to try in a much smaller race. I think wood elves will kinda look funny using monk moves and ulak's lol.
Not sure how i feel about the treant warder.I really was hoping a spider or something was going to be used instead.(That'd be cool!)
also, statswise, wood elves are a bit rough for the class. They dont have much str for damage, very little stamina but they have decent wisdom in comparison to some of the other races for beastlord. For most of the modern gaming and defiant generation, it wont really matter. But for those progression groups and slower paced, retro-style gearing groups it might prove as a bit of a challenge.

My beastlord had the wood elf clickie illusion. Neither final combo was that fresh due to in-game items that arent crazy hard to get (if you really want them) allowing you to fake it.

I think the traditionalist vote swayed this here. If they had spent some time over expacs developing lore to give us reason for evil ranger or good dark elves... that might of been a non factor.

I put a longer response in the main article thread so I won't go on here except to say I wish they had added 5-6 combos, even if they were all tight to current lore as it were.

Froglok monks was done to avoid "battletoads, that's hilarious I am voting for it" in my view. Once they added Inny for frogloks they should have gone all/all with that race anyways. They already have the deity and root classes for everything but druid/ranger. Why not? [keep in mind I can't manage to play a froglok past level 12 so I am not a fan]

well not doing it on purpose anyway :) I use him as my puller instead of the monk when outdoors. Damn mobs in WoS like to stun and i try to pull a few at a time. So i RangerGate a lot but not on purpose :)

Iksar are medium sized. Wood elves would certainly be the first semi-small beastlord.

The race/combo makes sense to me (certainly more than gnome beastlord) though I liked Tier'Dal bard the best out of the original options. I know it's easy enough for any other bard to fake it but from a lore standpoint it just seemed a natural fit.

Not to mention all the instruments would need to be custom made. They do have hands that are large as frying pans and fat fingers. No way they are strumming any lute made for an Elf. Smiley: smile I dont think though that they have the dexterity to pull it off tough, but would be funny as hell.

I just hope they let us use the change race potions. I would love to change my Vahshir into a wood elf.... I love the idea of getting a Treant Pet....

Seriously, how BIG are these warders going to be?? Treants are usually HUGE and while the current variety of beastlord pets are variable none come close to the size of a large oak tree! I know they'll be shrinkable but this is still going to be a PITA in dungeons and elsewhere.

I hate to be a Gloomy Gus but this kind of thing reminds me of both when they introduced the new races of Vah Shir and Froglok: for a couple of weeks their noobie zones were crawling with newly made alts with "clever" names like Pussnboots and Ribbit but shortly thereafter the new toons got shelved and never seen again on the face of Norrath. We'll see a rash of Wood Elf beastlords (with names like Woodmaster and Lumberingjack) and maybe some of them will even populate GFay for awhile, which will be nice to see since it's such a deserted zone these days, and Crushbone will see a flurry of activity but after a month all the excitement will pass. I think the devs would have been better off instituting some more broad-based race/class combos, like opening most classes to most races, except maybe for those that would grossly offend EQ lore, such as high elf shadowknights and dwarf shamans.

So the woodelf won and they couldn't come up with anything better for their warder than a fu&^ing tree. How is that being a beastlord? Shouldn't it be an animal that the woodelves revere? I understand that they love the trees but wtf......

Trents are weird because I always assumed they were sentient. Having one as your beastlord companion feels a bit off, like having a kobold or goblin or centaur. More of a slave than a pet.

As long as Dwarf beastlords get a Butcherblock skunk (when they open up that race/class combo) all will be right in the world.


treant is a bit odd, not horrible, but an strange stretch when it wasn't necessary to stretch. Wood Elves (are a much played druid/ranger race) are loved by various cats, wolves and bears in the old world. Surely one of the models could have been chosen (just not the same as existing druid/shaman baby pets please).

If they'd gone puma model (like in Blackfeather Roost) all the sad Drizzzzzt wannabe's could have illusion masked themselves to happiness too.

Dont think of Beastlords summoning animals. They are not, they instead are summoning spirits or Spirit GUides that they have an akinship with. That is why there buffing spells are Spirit of blah blah and why they can also take the form of their Spirit Guide. There fore it only makes sense that Wood Elves living in trees and spending all their time in nature and communing with it would Have trees as their Spirit Guide. And Im guessing the warders will be arborean's like the Arborean Scouts in GFay.. They are Treant like but not Treants.

Also just imagine the names we are going to see like Lookatmywood and Igotabigstick and wanttoseemywood ..... not to mention the pet names we will see people make like Mybigstick and Woody, etc...

The original concept was a class that had a single persistent pet who grew and gained powers by buffing it. Without the buffs, your wolf pet was just a little regular wolf (or bear, etc) and the 'Spirit' line was the spell that brought your pet up to your appropriate level. But persistent pets didn't play well with the code at the time and they were forced to abandon that soon after Luclin launched and go to the more traditional system. The class description still hints at it:

I remember a dev saying the long-term nature of the pet (it was essentially a 10 hour buff) caused problems with the code as well as any balancing issues but don't have a source for that.

Oh, and all this is of course largely irrelevant since EQ devs are gonna do what EQ devs wanna do.

They're BEASTlords. The implication is they're summoning BEASTS---whether as animals, spirits or whatever, we're still dealing with BEASTS. With all due respect to PETA and animal-lovers everywhere there's a reason animals are sometimes crudely referred to as "DUMB beasts", the implication being that they can't communicate and lack the self-awareness of sentient beings.

Treants are derived from Tolkien's "ents", which were supposed to be a race of sentient beings who RESEMBLE large trees.

Having wood elf beastlords use treants as their warders offends lore in so many ways, IMO. Yes, it's reminiscent of slavery and one would think noble fundamentally good characters like wood elves wouldn't go around enslaving other thinking beings. Although some extreme animal activists would describe pet ownership as a form of slavery, most rational people consider owning a pet, or adventuring with a warder, to be a healthy symbiotic relationship, but that only works if the pet/warder is a "beast" and not another intelligent being. Right?
