EQs F2P ModelFollow

#1 Nov 02 2013 at 9:21 PM Rating: Good
Hello, everyone... it's been a while. I seem to do this every year or so. Hah.

So I'm very comfortable with LotRO's F2P model. By far, it's the best f2p model I've ever encountered... but I don't really remember EQ's model very well. I think I was leaving this last time right as they implemented it... but what I'm getting at is: Do they have some sort of model in place to unlock content/remove caps? I remember equipment restriction being a thing. Any way to remove those without subscribing?

I kinda want to play again... as I'm wont to do with startling frequency. But I don't want to spend another penny on the game (not after 8+ years of $13-15 a month).

F2P in Eq1 is fine till you get higher lvls. There are alot of items in game that you can't ever use until you pay the monthly fee. There are no unlockers for the gear restrictions. Most of the restricted gear is lvl 80+ gear. You also are capped at 1k AA unless you spend $2.50 to unlock 100 at a time after that. Your mercs cap at App5 as well in F2P/Silver. You will not be able to sell in bazaar with F2P either.

I really wish they had it set up like Everquest 2. For nominal fees you can sell on the AH and unlock best gear in the game. I know how you feel on not wanting to drop any more money into the game. I know without any doubt that since I first played the game (prob around 2000ish) I have spent well over $1000 between expansions and subscription fees alone. I don't care to drop a couple of bucks here and there for an unlock but im done spending $15 a month.

http://www.everquest.com/free/ and the FAQ linked on the same page, should give you most all of the details you want.

They removed some restrictions already, like no Class / Race restrictions that Gold doesn't have from non-grandfathered in Silver or Bronze levels. Fronglo covered the big ones though. Although I might note, that most augs, other than hotzone augs and a few others are part of the prestige equipment that has no unlockers.

Hmm, I'll consider giving EQ another shot, then. I think the biggest issue I had is that my account is OLD... and yet I don't think they give any leeway to those of us who have played for years if we stop paying a monthly. Bleh

As an old account you may have some loyalty points saved up (visit the NPC just south of nexus stone in PoK to use that feature).

You should also login to Legends of Norrath and see if you have any free packs to claim. When I came back I did... and got a highspeed mount in one of my free packs.

You'll also have your paid-history credit for veterans rewards. You can only claim that for a limited number of characters though.

A big part of the impetus behind our "Lunar Madness" guild (several threads here on Allakhazam) is that we are minimally impacted by the F2P/silver restrictions as we are playing 15-20 levels below where it really starts to even kick in.

Also note that I firmly believe we are going to see a major tweak to the F2P matrix before next spring. They are dabbling with big things in EQ2 atm (lifted many of the F2P restrictions, added heroic characters...), and things that work for SoE in that game (i.e., marketplace) tend to trickle back to us.

Personally, I sub gold on my single account I play to 1. not get constantly remind to upgrade to gold and 2. to be able to create characters with non-Crescent Reach starting city.

Welcome back!

Hah. Thanks. Well, I'll take a look at that guild thread and figure out what I'm going to do. Thanks for the help, all!

Pretty sure old accounts are automatically flagged as Silver. Also even though F2P only lets you play with 4 toons if you have more than 4 it won't make you delete them you just won't be able to make new ones. Being that its free to log in ID says its probably worth your time to give it another try. If you haven't played in a very long time the leveling from about 1 to 60 is insanely fast now especially if you have the veteran reward that gives double exp for 30 min at a time.

I was pretty amused to see that hot zone augments that were +65hp or AC:20 were still allowed but my +2 AGI augs from old LDoN content weren't allowed by the new system.

I've seen the opinion in many places that it's not really worth playing a tank class on a silver account due to the AA limitations and that number of AA you need to do your job past level 70ish. DPS and healing classes have it a little easier. Still, since you can keep any AA you made before you went silver, others pay for a single month of gold, blast through as many AA as they can and let their account lapse back to silver (keeping their new AA) rather than directly pay for the rather limited cap increases.
