Running eq on external ssdFollow

#1 Oct 15 2013 at 12:06 AM Rating: Decent
Hello everyone I am currently playing ever quest on my laptop computer, which has a 500 gig hard drive, but it is only 5400 rpm. I have two 3.0 usb ports available, I am considering purchasing an usb 3.0 ssd. I am currently running an amd a4 4300-m processor, it runs just fine for ever quest but the problem is waiting for zoning. I am wondering would an external ssd help any or would an internal be the best bet the external because 128 gig is not a lot of space but just for ever quest it would be fine. I would get 256 gig or 500 gig ssd but right now can’t afford them I just want the 128 gig for ever quest.

Hello,
If slow zone times, storage or space wouldn't be an issue as EQ requires around 10gb h/d space even for a gold account with ROF expansion.

I think you need a 7200rpm or greater HDD type h/drive or the SSD to speed up zone times (SSD is faster than a 7200 rpm standard HDD drive). But I am not sure if when using a 7200 rpm or SSD, if you would still be bottle necked by the operating systems limitations on your laptop.

Good luck.

I've got a fairly zippy laptop -- it's not an MSI or Alienware, but it's zippy with game settings maxxed. I've swapped the platter HD for a Samsung 840Pro SSD as the only HD in it, and zone times still are, well, still teh suck. So, in a way, it's just the game itself; it's ancient by comparable standards with an aging and inefficient engine.

Internal would be better to run the SSD. I believe internal SATA connections are still faster than USB 3.0. 3.0 is faster than USB 2.0, but not faster than a laptop's SATA connections. I've started installing USB 3.0 add-on cards on some of my computers and while they are fast compared to 2.0 (which is prehistoric by modern standards lol) I do notice variability. Maybe this is due to being add-on cards instead of built into the motherboard. My point is, though, if USB 3.0 is inherently variable then you will experience slowdowns running EQ on an external SSD connected via USB.

Some laptops have external SATA connections and I know external drives can be connected that way. Might be an option to consider.

SSDs are usually recommended to speed up operating system boot time. But I doubt you'd want to put your boot drive on an external drive...

You don't need a 3.0 SSD. Just get a 3.0 USB memory stick. I'm running multiple instances of EQ via a 3.0 USB 16GB memory stick on my work computer and zone loading is actually faster than my home pc's 7200 HDD.

Plus the added convenience of always having my EQ in my pocket next to my keys and can play it on any computer without installing it is immeasurable. If I happen to plug it into a pc that doesn't have 3.0 it still runs at 2.0 speeds which still has acceptable loading times.

Another factor to remember is that memory matters as well. While the system has to load zonefiles from your hard drive (and compare them to the server data for consistency), it has to store all the info about that zone (and everything in it) in memory. Since you describe your play as "zippy" once loaded, this hopefully is not an issue. But it's worth looking at. If your memory size is small enough that data has to be shuffled in and out of virtual memory while loading a new zone, that's going to involve reads and writes to the local disk. Which may slow down load times even if the EQ data itself is on a fast SSD.

well here is my opinion on the matter. You said that you had an Amd a4 4300-m processor which is good, however not exactly the best processor. I have an Intel i7 quad core, 8 gigs of ram, 2 gig video card, 256 gig with 6gb transfer rate ssd, cox 55 mbps cable internet, I have a $200.00 router the cheap ones are that for reason. I am connected hard line meaning network cable, I find wireless to much ping time which equals lag, I disabled any programs that might auto update in the back ground. I have tried the usb 3.0 ,ethod and seems still slow compared to internal drive. I am not going to get into which is better esata or usb 3.0 depends on how it is being used, I can find 1000 websites says usb 3.0 is better and 1000 say esata is better. I know not everyone has the money to have the same setup. I hope I did help some though but even with my setup there is still some loading like someone else stated old game which also has to go and forth between your local computer and it's servers.

Good to see you still about GB.

I said my box was zippy. :-D

I've got a nice rig, it's just not an MSI/Alienware/Sager, et al; my set up isn't all that different from CJguy except I've got an additional 8 gig RAM.
