Silly thing is...current gold subscribers get....you got it...nothing. Not complaining, just pointing it out. This promotion was targeted solely to free/silver accounts that have at one time or another in the past few years been a subscriber.

That's not surprising. I don't get anything special as a subscriber during HBO's "free trial" weekends. They're trying to lure new people in to spend money; giving free stuff to current subscribers is counter productive.

More strange to me is " This offer is also made available to Free and Silver players who have not logged in for the past 30 days." which would imply that current Free/Silver players are not eligible. People who already have the game installed and are playing it seem like the most profitable low-hanging fruit for a "Go gold" promotion versus people who haven't played the game in ages.

One possibly unintended result of the WinBack promotion would be Free accounts that do qualify and login, will be granted Silver status after the promotion expires.

They've been tweaking the free/silver/gold matrix over in EQII... maybe this is just a precursor to that. What I mean is... this won't look like anything much was given after they revise the EQ freemium matrix. Becoming silver via this isn't really an issue... it was insta-silver (no time played ever) accounts they set up their tiers to avoid.

Well, while it's maybe just a tiny, irrelevant little something, there's a sort of silver lining for gold in that you get an increased population in the game environment. While I'm not sure of the full complexity of the "free2play" change, I'm willing to wager they made EQ free2play simply to increase the population of the environment, and hopefully retain some of that increase. So the payplayers get a population boost which may or may not matter to the individual player but probably is good for the game.

I'm currently free2play but I'll no doubt be going silver when I hit max AA at 250; and then up to gold once I have to. Because it's like crack, right? "Here's a free sample, tell all your friends" "oh you wanting a little bit more huh? you need a stronger dose yeah?" "oh you need the gold now huh? somehow we thought as much" business as usual.

This reminds me of cell phone companies here in Canada. When I signed my 3 year contract, I was told that I would get a free phone upgrade after 2 years. Well, my 2 years are up and guess what? "We changed the basic contract to free phone after 30 months, then further changed it to 34 months, therefore in 10 months you can apply for your free upgrade." BUT, I say, new contracts are for two years. Yes, we changed the plans due to competition and new regulations. BUT, I say, why would I not then just wait out those additional two months, sign a new contract with another carrier, get the new two year deal with free phone and not have to renew and be stuck with your substandard deal for another 3 years? That's your choice sir......

I get the exact same feeling from SOE on this deal. Current subscribers get nada. We supported SOE and our reward, nada. I WILL be changing cell phone providers and WILL be telling everyone about the retarded customer service I got from my current provider. I will also NEVER EVER consider them again, no matter what deal they offer.... SOE? We'll see, I may drop back to free.

The difference between the cost of a new phone (hundreds of dollars) and two weeks of gold membership ($7.50?) is vast enough that my approach and reaction to each would be dramatically different. You're not even being "cheated" out of anything promised by SOE, versus your phone company jacking your contract around and refusing to abide by the signed terms.

Also, I have no idea how they do things in Canada, but I'd assume they're not allowed to unilaterally change your contract and you probably just discarded whatever notification they sent you which would have included an opt-out/cancel clause.

Here they stick a clause in the contract allowing them to change it. I never received any notice though.

I hear you re: SOE not offering any promises, but it still leaves a sour taste when someone who has not supported them gets freebies, even for a couple of weeks. I'd love that bag as my chars are very plat poor and loyalty points go to support my 12 char stable. Also, one of my free accounts hasn't been logged in months and got nada, lol.
