Inspired by Banner and Shishu, I started my own "old school " character Rhaah, a barbarian shaman. I wanted to do something a little different, and I remember Halas/everfrost being a place with a whole lot of mobs in the newbie area...Smiley: grin

Some notes now that Rhaah is level 3
1. I always thought that it took longer to level back in the day because you were underpowered, but really it is more just because I cannot kill anything quickly...takes minutes to kill blues and whites at level 3...Smiley: dubious
2. With the way Halas is set up, having to swim the lake, it takes forever to just run errands and finish quests...which is actually fun because Halas was always a confusing place for me to run around, and I am getting to know the zone better.
3. It is fun to loot EVERYTHING...I forget that I cannot give myself all this money to buy things, and spells cost.
4. I get sooooooo excited when I see mobs carrying weapons, cause that equals money....Smiley: grin Smiley: slySmiley: grin
5. The class armor that you can make is really cool...to get 3 wisdom on a bracer when you got nothing is actually EXCITING...Smiley: grin

Anyway, if you are on Povar and you see some corpses named Rhaah in Everfrost, please stop and say a little pray...Smiley: bowdown

Awesome, it's an Old School Renaissance! Smiley: laugh

Agreed about kill times. With no haste items and crap weapon delays, I swing. so. very. slow. I'll be thrilled when I at least get my haste spell though that's a ways off. I'm sure you'll be thrilled when you get Dog Dog.

I've been debating what would be fun to do after Banner (Troll Sk). Old School Barbarian has appeal... love your name!

You can go very close to fifty just hanging tight to Halas too. It won't be efficient, but it is possible.

Decided that I really wanted this https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=1209 ...cause my beginning club is terrible...Smiley: banghead

But I forgot what an an ordeal running from Everfrost to Qeynos is...especially for a blind Barbarian....Smiley: grin

Managed to do it with out too many deaths, and it was interesting to note that I remember Qeynos really well for not having been there for like 4 years.

Ran into the sewers to see if Cubert was up, or any other named mobs, and in the process got a free gate back to Halas from a Giant rat and his 6 friends...Smiley: lolSmiley: lolSmiley: lol

Having alot of fun with this...thanks again for the idea Banner and shishu...Smiley: bowdown

My first EQ character (in 2001, yes I am a newbie) was a Barbarian Warrior. I remember that swim! (And f.u. Vengeful Soloist!)

I finally got to Qeynos and didn't know why most of the town wouldn't deal with me.. I never ruined my lands!

After Holly had admonished me a couple of times I tried by luck in the Western Planes of Karana. And went the sun went down I spent the night in the watchtower cowering behind the guards (who just watched as the undead tried to kill me). And in the morning I found the bandit farm.. I still remember jumping a bandit and all his friends appeared to help him. Took me a couple of more deaths to drag my corpse away from that spot.

Ah the good olde days. I miss Halas.

Banner has been running around Neriak (I'll get around to updating the thread!) and I had the same kind of experience. I was looking at the map to find someone... and realized I remembered most of the 3 zones and it would be faster to just go to the spot I think that npc would be near.... and I was right.

My first 3-4 years in EQ were 90% dark elf. I haven't played them since 2007ish really, but it's obviously burned into my memory more than I thought. Using Neriak Underground again was somewhat unnnerving.

Disillusioned by the inaction of the Church of the Tribunal in Halas ( as they hide in Halas while Everfrost is overrun by goblins, gnolls, and other vermin ) Rhaah strikes out for Qeynos.

Arriving at the tunnel to Backburrow proves to be very good hunting grounds as many gnolls are killed. Blackburrow itself proves to be to big a challenge, so Rhaah runs through quickly and continues on to Qeynos.

As he approaches the gates, a shout goes up and Rhaah sees a large Gnoll charging his way. A blast of frost brings the beast at him and it turns out to be a leader of the Gnolls, Fippy Darkpaw. A quick battle ensues and the Gnoll is killed. ( He drops a smaller version of the fabled Fippy Paw now...+1 wis +1 int and it is a fits the secondary slot and looks like a set of claws....pretty cool...Smiley: sly )

Rhaah decides to head to the sewers to cleanse it for the Tribunal. In one of the corners is the Undead Knight https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/npc.html?id=12299 ( who drops the +5hp ring...got 2 of them tonight.Who knew that +5 hp could be so exciting...Smiley: grin )

As he adventures deeper an injured rat appears https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/npc.html?id=3542 ( another +5 item...wooohoo )

Finally Rhaah comes across Cubert, a small gelatinous cube. He loots a dress from it and he remembers a rumor about a man who had lost his daughter. Returning to South Qeynos he finds Zamel and shows him the dress. Through tears he offers Rhaah a reward https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=1929 for helping him learn what happened to his daughter. ( Cool affect for shaman DOT's )

( Was a fun nite on, but I forgot how frustrating the drops for the old world quests can be. I killed nearly 100 cubs to only get 4 polar skins, which still netted me 4 pieces of armor. Only 4 skins left to go... Smiley: banghead I am leveling so slow, so at level 6 I still have alot of time for the newbie armor to very useful...Smiley: laugh)

( On another note, saw that Jonwin was on so ran to the POK to kneel before his greatness Smiley: bowdown I am sure he had no idea who I was...hehe. Also, and even more fun, was that Banner was on and I got to talk to him for awhile. Looking forward to reading about his adventures of the evening. )

So...logged on last night for a couple of hours, sadly Banner was not on...Smiley: oyvey

One thing I had forgotten about the old world was just how F'n bad the drop rate is, but not only that, the spawn rate of mobs that drop quest items...Smiley: glareSmiley: mad

Spent 2 hours in Everfrost to see 4 snow orc troopers, 2 of which actually dropped wristbands...and only three polar bears in the whole area west of the river...ugggh!!!! ( None of which dropped the polar bear skin )

I started killing everything in sight, which with my gear and level, takes forever to try to do, and still no luck with the spawns...

and yet, I am still having a blast running around like an idiot...Smiley: sly

I did find 2 cubs back near Halas, and both dropped skins...go figure, so now I wear this https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=22027 , to go along with 2 bracers and the boots.

Went to Qeynos Hills looking for https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/npc.html?id=3763 and the https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=2297 ( not sure why, since it really isnt good for me, but would be cool to have.

Managed to get three Dread corpses after me, as well as 2 grizzlies...the guards at the entrance to Surefall killed the bears, which got them in a staredown with the Millers, but would not kill the Undeads...no guards in all of the Hills would kill them, so like any good Shammie, I just kept running....Smiley: grin

Oh, and by the way, made it to level 8...

Grats on level 8!

I was in everfrost (on Povar) the other day... and ran around the entire east side for a couple of hours. There was very few mobs overall. If I had been on a higher level I would have killed everything to see if past farmers had made all the spawns go similar species, but really it seemed like 80% of the mobs were missing to me.

You got a nice chest waaay sooner than Banner managed it. 1-10 in this game, played oldschool is absolutely brilliant. Once you get into the level range where the cool places were designed for groups I think mileage varies. Banner was glad to get out of the teen levels for sure (but that could just be me playing a melee).

Snail;
I read about Banner being there, and logged in not long after to see if he was still on...just missed ya...

I am actually trying to figure what I want to do in the teens...As a Shammie, I don't kill very fast, hence the reason am working hard on getting this newbie armor to help protect me. So many options open...

Thought about Befallen, just cause I love that zone, but not alot of helpful drops there. Also considered the Warrens, but the trains and runners there are almost as bad as Guk ( almost...Smiley: sly )

I was even thinking of running to Unrest...Done all those zones so much, just don't know what I want to do...

As a Shammie of the Tribunal, I have the freedom to roam freely, so

Unrest has this guy https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/npc.html?id=24155 who drops this https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=54975 as well as some other drops, so that is looking like a good deal...its just a hell of a run from Everfrost....Smiley: lol

Any suggestions ( from anyone ) will be greatly appreciated ( and tried ) And I'll let you know how it goes...Smiley: wink
