Which is better for soloing: Wizard or Magician? I want a high-DPS caster that can kill enemies easily and quickly but still survive mobs of enemies.

With or without Merc - no doubt - the Magician.

(Quick reply :-) )

I can't speak to the top end, but my 65 Wizard with all of his relevant AA's is a little monster when it comes to killing. He's very well geared, so can also tank a bit if need be. My 55 Mage has most of his AA's and is also very good, but doesn't seem to kill as fast as the Wiz did at that same level with similar AA's.

I have played both to the mid 80s. This year, from level 1.

Mage is a fine soloer as long as you manage your pulls. "Gate" is your only really get out of jail card (no root, no snare, no evac, no FD) so when it goes badly, it goes badly quickly. Yes, you can bring out a fresh pet quickly (spells or AA), but it's starting from zero Hate so in general I still get pancaked.

Molo the Mage is really good.. heal my super tank pet. But when it goes badly, see above.. and I find myself at Bind. But summoning mobs are no problem, pet holds aggro.

The Wizard can root and snare, solo kiting is very productive. And you have personal (and group) escape spells and AA. Mind you I still manage to get killed, but that is not from lack of options. And the Wizard does a ton more DPS (or at least feels like it).

Even with the recent pet nerfs, I think molo Mage is very seductive. My main problem was runners.. no snare. Which is why I started the Wizard (really to just be a snare and one button DPS). What works for me is I leave the Wizard mounted and parked to regen mana and use the Mage to pull and then blast it to bits.

But then I started having mana issues.. and a Bard is really easy to park on /follow with /melody.. and can be used to pull. Which is how I found myself full time three boxing. Which is fun, but sometimes I don't want the hassle of managing it.

TL/DR -

Mage with or without a Healer Merc is super easy to play and versatile.. unless the mobs run at low health or you over pull.

Wizard is awesome solo as long as you have room and it doesn't summon.

If I had to pick one to solo.. Mage wins. I played a Necro main for years and I'm tired of running in circles.. pet tanking with or without a Healer merc is more relaxing.

If I had to pick one to bring to a group.. Wizard wins out by a hair. No pet management, ports, and big numbers are fun.

Good advice all round.
The only other thing I could add is that by lvl 90 (I have a 90 Mage and an 89 Wizard) the Mage is not restricted to non summoning mobs solo..This even after the "Enhanced Minion 7" (EM7) and up pet focus nerf.

Which makes a difference while the Wizard like my Necro main, is limited to non summoning mobs unless hunting content a bit below his level.

If I had to choose which one to solo I would rather the Mage. But Wizards can definitely solo at the high levels well .They just have to be more selective re the targets.

Survival wise the wizard will evacuate etc or AE snare and kite (re non summoning mobs) to escape being hit from overpulls or a hard mob while the Mage has his tanking pets standing between him and the mob. This allows the Mage to go after virtually any mob at his level while Wizards (like Necros) have the burden of selecting non summoning mobs at their level when solo..

Just something to consider as you level up your character.

Good luck and enjoy.

It's important to note that Wizards can molo as well (and it's honestly more effective for many level ranges). Merc tanks are plenty capable of handling mobs for the short period of time it takes a wizard to nuke them down, and you can usually kill sufficiently faster doing this than kiting (which is frankly a pain in the butt in many many zones) to more than justify the cost of the merc itself. This gets less feasible at higher levels though, but it absolutely helps get Wizards though the range of levels where they stop getting new direct AE spells (other than rains). I've never found single mob kiting to be faster than moloing overall, but I suppose that's totally dependent on your approach in terms of relative mob levels. And of course, there's the whole summoning thing, but that's just a matter of finding the right mobs to fight.

Mages are definitely more flexible in the sense that they can go pretty much anywhere and solo/molo effectively. Wizards have to be incredibly picky about targets if they want to be super effective soloing. But honestly, once you find a great hunting spot with your wizard, it's pretty darn amazing. Also, as someone else pointed out, the multiple means of escape when things do go bad (and they will, eventually) is pretty nice. Not quite FD nice, but also far more certain. It's nearly impossible for a solo wizard to actually die.

Just as a side note, even though I'm a wizard and insta-evac is a life saver.. There are FD potions available.. they came out with the latest expansion. Hehe. Link is here: Planar Overdose. The only downside to this is that it's level 90+.
