Hi everyone! Im new to everquest. I wanted to start playing a couple of months ago but i was busy. Now at last i have some free time and all classes and races are unlocked, thats why i need your help.
->First of all what class should i pick? Im a fan of Dungeons and Dragons where my favorite classes were paladin and black guard, and here in Everquest i found a paladin and a shadow knight. Who would be better for me if i prefer a solo/melee class or something?(Maybe your suggestions for this kind of class).
->Second: which race i have to choose for the selected class.
->Which server should i pick?
->And the last one: When should i become a silver and gold member.
Thank you! And sorry if my english is bad, Hail from Russia!

Welcome to Everquest!

Both Shadowknights and Paladins are a lot of fun, but I prefer paladins here. For Servers I"d suggest Bristlebane, but that's merely personal preference.

Both classes can be a lot of fun. Why not try both to start with. As for a server, Vox seems to be pretty good for beginners.

Try both classes and see which one fits your play style best. Races make very little difference in the long run so pick the one that you find interesting. I am not sure that any server has a large population of fresh starting players so not sure where a good place to start is. They are changing lots of the restrictions on the free to play accounts so play until you the restrictions are an issue and then upgrade.

Welcome to Everquest, hope you enjoy your stay.

SPECIAL RULESET SERVERS

Progression servers (Fippy and Vulak) - these start out at original EQ and then as requirements are met, each server can unlock the next expansion. Currently, they are voting to unlock PoP expansion (which had a level 65 cap).
Firiona Vie - This was traditionally called the roleplay server (though this may not be as popular as in the past). Free transfers are allowed to this server, almost all items are tradable (there is very little marked "no trade") and a few other benefits are also associated with the server. However, once you transfer on, you cannot transfer off as you can most other servers.
Zek - this is the PVP (player vs player) server.

1) Shadowknight is considered to be the stronger of the two classes, but there are a lot out there because of their ability to kill multiple opponents at once at higher levels (called swarming). Now, Paladins can do this too, especially against undead, but they're generally considered worse than the SK in terms of power. However, if you go Paladin, your item cost is likely to be a little less as — at least on my server Firiona Vie — there's a premium price on SK items.

2) Choose the race whose lore or look you like. Any of the shortcomings or advantages of races can be made up for with Alternate Advancement points after level 51. The only exception to this is that Halflings continue to have an XP bonus. But, they're halflings.

3) Go for the most populated. I wouldn't go for Vox because the population is pretty low (last I saw), but Fippy's pop is higher. You have to be a gold member to get there though. Really, if you want a normal server rules, try Luclin (pop is high).

4) When you determine you like the game. Remember, if you go gold once on an account, it will always be silver after that. So, you could spend $5 to go silver then end up going gold later and just wasting $5. If you have the money and you like the game, go gold. Also, as you're higher level, you're going to want more than 1000 AA (especially as a SK or Paladin).

For what it's worth over many years of playing EQ I've run into a lot of paladins who lament how underpowered is their class. I can't remember one who bragged about being overpowered. On the other hand, it's exactly the reverse with shadowknights, in my experience. The best reason to play a paladin is if you greatly value the roleplay-ish aspects of playing a "fighting priest." I'm not saying you have to be INTO roleplaying, just that you value the image/concept of the paladin.

Ultimately, three best pieces of advice for newbies and long-time-back returnees: (1) Try several classes before committing to one, (2) Play what class you seem to enjoy the most and (3) Remember levelling is so easy these days so if you decide you made the wrong choice, just start over. Whatever you learned from the class you abandon will still serve you well in future.

BTW, that server listing posting above is GREAT---useful for both noobs and veterans.

What do you people mean when you say "before committing to one"? I play a paladin, 2 druid, beastlord, cleric ranger and beastlord on my and Elne Clare's account. Have leveled a rogue and second cleric to 65 (when the cap was 75) before retiring and I recently semi retired my shaman at 81.

I enjoyed playing them all but had to cut down on the toons as the content kept changing.

For the OP the key thing I enjoy PLAYING them. So try many classes and then stick with what brings you enjoyment.
