Shadowknight vs. WarriorFollow

#1 Oct 15 2011 at 11:38 PM Rating: Excellent
I know this may not be the proper place to post so if not sorry. I have been playing about a year now necromancer, I want yo play a melee class. I was wondering what can a sk do that a warrior can't do and vice versa. I know some say warriors are best in raids but why is that ? Is it have to do with kick, dual wield and damage migration other than that they pretty much the same In groups I guess. I am not interested in raiding, just casual groups I want just merc and I at sometimes. I just want to play around check different zones and content. I pretty sure this topic has been disscussed before but figured I would ask anyways.

As you dont intend to raid the SK will offer more utility than the Warrior while still having enough mitigation to tank all group content, providing it is well geared and ac auged in all possible slots after lvl 80.

SKs become very good FD/Pullers from lvl 85(deaths effigy AA). They have excellent instant aggro tools, both single target and AE coupled with Feign Death gives the SK great agro control. Their pet is weaker than a Mage,Beastlord or Necro but can add some reasonable dps especially if Mage geared and pet aas are enabled.

The SK's dps is not as good as a Warrior. This is more noticeable if the warrior is duel wielding. Sk's also have snare and a line of weakish instant cast dots as well as lifetap. Melee HP return via aa's and self buffs/procs, is a significant source of self healing for a SK especially if soloing or swarming.

The Warrior is the pure tank of EQ which requires support more than the SK. Warriors have superior damage mitigation and many discs and tools for back to back hard mobs/sticky situations and they will attain higher AC values and Hit points if similarly geared to an SK or any other class..Their melee damage is also higher than the SK.

If you like exploring, I believe the SK is more appropriate character. SK's and Paladins get fast horses (via AAs) also which will make travelling through zones that much faster.

Good luck and enjoy.

For what you say you want to do, I second hexeez's assessment of SK > warrior.

Casually... especially if you stay reasonable well-geared and up on AA's... your necro can do an awful lot as well, especially with situational use of a merc (i.e., some bosses). SK will obviously survive better vs. the summoning mobs that are closer to you in level... if you enjoy killing content that is a tad below you, well then you can employ less ideal tactics such as tap tanking.

My disclaimer would be that I am not sure how this tranlates into the 80+ game as I haven't got my necro up there. From other posts & forums, it appears SK is the solo/molo (merc soloing) of choice.

I only mention this IF you are feeling content limited by being a necro as your primary reason for going into melee.

I apperciate the answers. I am just wanting to give melee class a try change of pace and looks fun. I just wish their was a Shaman merc for pet dps, slows, dots, haste and healing. I know LOL can't have it all.

I will put it this way Bobby both Warrior and SK are great tanks. Here is my 2 cent worth I have a friend who plays both war and SK. I was grouped with him while he was on SK , his cleric merc , me necro, my rogue merc, a beast lord and his wiz merc. Everything was great with 1, 2 maybe even 3 mobs but adds 4 or 5 or mobs was a disaster. Now on his Warrior which has 100 ac higher than his SK he could handle 5 or 6 mobs which I believe the extra 100 ac along with his tombs helped. I just say something to consider, feign death, lifetap and snare are great as well.

Feign Dead is the best effect in-game, in general terms. There is almost no situation you can't get out of with it. An example, is running into a raid event with lots of mobs and getting lucky enough to get FD off successfully before being noticed; you may not be able to get out alive. Still there is a chance, you can stand move back out a bit, and FD again before dieing, then regen while FD, and continue the process until clear.

Thanks for the info, I too was rather curious of the differences. I think with my recent return to EQ the SK may be more versatile for solo(+merc)
