I downloaded the maps from mapfiend but I can't figure out how to use them in game.. whenever I try to extract them to Everquest maps folder I keep getting an error like this
! C:\Users\Sarodare\Downloads\mapfiend_ALL.zip: Cannot create abysmal_1.txt
! Access is denied.

Can anyone tell me what is wrong?

Thanks in advance

You need to set the folder to have read and write permissions. Right-click on the maps folder, select Properties. On the first tab, uncheck Read-Only. In Vista, you also need to go to the Security tab, select your user name, click Edit, select your user name on the new list, in the bottom list, uncheck any Deny, and hit Ok, hit Ok.

Windows 7 should be similar.

EDIT: Just in case you needed some other info, after fixing this:
== Maps ==
Details of Map File Contents
In-game Map File Layers

=== Map Sources ===
Mapfiend Map Packs
Select All Maps and hit the Download button. You need scripting (Javascript / VB Script) turned on in your browser.
Usng Winzip for you Mapfiend map packs
Printable Hand-drawn maps

I got vista and I'm doing what you said but it doesn't save it when I set to unread or when I adjust the user rights

Might look at this:
http://www.vista4beginners.com/Change-permissions-take-ownership

It's a bit more thorough that what I said. Also, if you're using a zip program, like Winzip, you can try running it as Administrator (right-click on the icon, and select Run as Administrator).

If your EQ is installed the Program Files (x86) directory, you may need to move it to a different folder. I'm not sure what all the issues are with Vista in regards to this, but I couldn't get EQ to run at all from there, and so moved it from the start.

So how did you figure it out, I'm having the same problem? Also which dir are the maps actaully in, I see a atlas dir and a map dir which both appear to contain the map files in the x86 section and another dir of maps in the non 86 section and I've tried coping maps into all 3.

everquest\maps, by default for vista, that would be C:\Program Files (x86)\Sony\Everquest\maps.

To find out for sure which directory, right-click on the link to EQ, select properties, in the window, select Short cut tab, check out the start in text box. That's the base EQ directory, maps go in the maps subdirectory.

Also check out the other other links in the previous posts.

Is there an updated way to install EQ Maps using Windows 8?

Hello,
Recently I downloaded maps from Mapfiend and EQ Resource (for the last 2 expansions) onto a laptop with windows 8.0 and soon afterwards I upgraded to 8.1 without incident for EQ.
I had extracted the map files from the winzip folder that it came in, to the Sony/Everquest/Map folder as stated by Yther earlier on in this thread.

In my case there was no administrator issues trying to extract and move map files. And when EQ itself was d/loaded, I had initially set the program to run as administrator from the outset.

Good Luck.

Custom Maps your down load now adays should be put in a custom folder so they dont get over writen with vinialla eq map updates.

If you are going to be downloading custom maps and don't want them written over be sure to put them into a subfolder
i have variuos custom subfolders and I have a custom ALL one that whem I make changes to in game maps -custom notes so my custom maps dont get over written.

Vista was bad, I agree. But Windows 8 is worse. Windows 7 was very solid though.

My old rig (that I use for EQ) runs XP.

Life has gotten quirky since they stop supporting it. Too bad... as it was excellent (and considering a local school board was still running it on about 4000 machines [as one example] when support was cut off not a product that the market was done with, but that Microsoft needed to bury to move along new product).

Interestingly enough, I can still load/patch/play EQ fine. WoW doesn't like my rig anymore and wants me to update nvidea drivers that nvidea hasn't updated since 2009 (I have that most current edition).

Anyways, nice answers on the mapfiend question from 2010 and necro-bumping that was a good update actually.

XP was great but running XP on any machine connected to the Internet nowadays is asking for trouble.

After working as on-site support at a Windows 8.1 house, I have to say, it's really not bad at all. It does a lot of things very well, and, several things pretty crapastically -- but ultimately, being forced to use it made me appreciate it as more than its reputation deserves.

I can't speak to consumer versions and 8.0 - was running 8.1 Enterprise x64 on a HP Z230 with only 4 gig of RAM and the combo for my purposes (not gaming clearly) was excellent.

And then gave us 8.0 with a huge message months later "OMG we are so sorry we pull another "WinME and Vista on you" please have 8.1 for free. Lol

Isn't the next Windows going to be called 10, skipping 9 entirely?? Cynics would suggest that they're going to break the trend of good alternating with bad versions of Windows, and go straight from one bad (8) right to the next bad (10)!
