Anyone familiar with this error?
ResetDevice () failed!
I get this error shortly after I start playing regardless what zone I'm in. I got the error for about 2 days and out of nowhere I played successfully for 3 hours last night. When I tried to get on this morning I kept getting this error again.
(rebooting the computer does NOT help clear this up)
I also contacted EQ support and they said they can't assist me because I am on a laptop. (WTF!?)

I found this:
Make sure you are out of the game when doing this.
This describes the workaround for Windows XP but the location of the refresh rate should be similar for older versions.
1.) Right click your desktop (make sure not to click an icon).
2.) Select "Properties."
3.) Click the "Settings" tab.
4.) Click "Advanced."
5.) Click the "Monitor" tab. Note what the refresh rate is set to.
6.) Open eqclient.ini
7.) If you get this bug lots, there is most likely a line that reads "RefreshRate=0" Set this line to equal the refresh rate you saw on the monitor tab.
The above should make the ResetDevice() Failed crash extremely rare. I posted this here since an extremely common known bug that's existed for a long time and I often run into people who say they can't tab out or they'll crash, and it's almost always due to this bug.

Are you by chance playing in Windowed mode? I get that error when I try to go into windowed mode is why I'm asking. I've never been able to play that way.

I believe I am, if I remember the convesation correctly. My friend who got me into this said I have to play in windowed mode because I have a widescreen monitor and the game isn't set up for that!?

I play on a wide screen monitor just fine except I can't play in windowed mode. Try it in full screen mode and see if that will work.

The error is caused by your graphics card. It's either due to a faulty setting, as some have already suggested, or because the card isn't up to the task you give it. Your card may just be inadequate, or it may be failing for one of several reasons, the typical being overheating (check your fans).
When you Tab between applications, you place a huge load on your GPU, and when you play in windowed mode, you effectively require your card to refresh your desktop AND EQ at the same time. Not smart. Next time you start EQ, after you click Play on the patcher, hit Alt+Enter when you look at the EULA. You may need to do it twice. Watch as the letters suddenly become crisp and sharp and lose the fuzzy look.
EQ plays just fine on a widescreen monitor, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I don't tab betweeen applications, I'm only running EQ when I have this issue. I'm going to try some of the suggestions and see what happens.
Have now changed my refresh rate down to 75htz, both for windows and both versions of EQ in the clint.ini file.
Dont think its my gcard causing the problem running ati x1600 512mb card, and my partner runs 4 versions of eq on her PC with minimal problems with vitrually the same system setup, only difference being she uses a sata drive, rather than IDE.

Your IDE channel may be sharing an IRQ with your video card. It happens (ACPI, bleh! I liked the old days when you had to move cards around, switch jumpers, blah blah blah...:) sometimes where IRQ sharing doesn't exactly mean IRQ sharing. :)

I had this happen to me a few times, although rarely.
Deleting the eqclient.ini file, loading EverQuest and setting things how I like it inside of game then /camp desktop (completely exit so changed are saved) helped me.
Assuming you're not running Vista btw.

Just food for thought,
For years I have run two accts on same machine in windowed mode without issue.

UNTIL... I installed AVG last night and can NOT keep my eq accts running for any length of time. I had uninstalled norton because of the memory it takes when its not doing anything (yes my zoning times have gotten better) but I really dont care to be online without any AV protection so I went with AVG.
Have tried the fix with the eqclient.ini and am fixin to launch both accts to see if that helps. Usually i can get things to crash just sitting at Character Select screen.
And the answer is NOPE, changing eqclient.ini doesn't prevent bombage at the CS screen, only enhances the effect.... lets try disabling AVG ....

I run multiple instances of EQ with a widescreen monitor and I use AVG. I've only ever seen this error once. That was actually only 2 days ago, strange..
I have this issue just trying to run one account. I cannot get into the game most of the time. If I do the first time I try to zone I crash. Anyone have more info?

Today I crashed out of bazaar. WHen I tried to reenter game, in windowed mode, I got as afar as the character launch. Then the screen went blank, disappeared and left behind the ResetDevice () failed error.
Have tried the first mentioned solution, make sure game ini refresh and my properties refresh rate listed as the same. No luck.
Any other ideas? I did try launching and when in Eula purchase screen go to full mode. No success that time either.

I have searched high and low and still have not found a remedy.
I was finally able to log in using alt ent to go to full screen on one account.
Once in I was able to go back to window mode and successfully logged onto the second account in windows.

Ok so I worked some more on this issue today. My suspicion was that it was a resources issue. My machine only has a gig of RAM and the problem started after I bought new anti-virus software which I knew was taking up more memory than the old one did.
So here is what I did to free up some resources and so far it is working great.
Right click on "My Computer"
Choose "Properties"
Choose the "Performance Settings"
Select "Adjust for best performance"
Reboot
Things don't look as pretty but it freed up enough resources that I can now log into EQ and play just fine.
Let me know if this helps anyone.

I ran into the problem with Norton (2008) breaking PoP3 mail in outlook (2000) version. After I ran the uninstall, it still took me another 4 hours to manually scan the registry and hard drive to remove about a dozen dlls that Norton not only left around but that were still being loaded.
AV programs are getting to be as insidious as viruses since they now link into every single communications and file manipulation service.
Good luck on switching AV programs.

I realise this post was made in 2007 but the part about GPU load and card being inadequate... even in 2007, an average budget video card was way more than enough to play EQ and still have time to breath, even when "not smart"ly, even when playing in windowed mode with full graphics on. I have a pc not upgraded since about 2006, I run two traders full time on it in windowed mode, a few other services, and usually have zam up on it, yet it never crashes. It has onboard cheapo, inadequate quite lacking video card. I've never once seen the error on that box, the game runs just fine.
No, I think the only thing not smart here is the user in 2007 assuming to know more than he did. Pointless to reply now. It just happens that this is the number one google result of "everquest reset device error" search.
