Howdy all.

I tried to do a "new to me" combine last night and got a message telling me I'm not even skilled enough to try this recipe, let alone fail it. What the heck???

I can understand failing a lot because my skill level is way below the trivial for a combine, but not even be allowed to do the combine??

Specifically, I wanted to make Ethereal curing agent.

When I look at the item on EqTraders I see it has a trivial of 212, but the line above it says "required skill level: 220".

My skill at the time was 158 with my 5% bonus equipped.

So what's the deal? A required skill level higher than the item even trivials out at???? I know it is early in the morning, but that doesn't make a bit of sense to me.

I also just now notice, while getting facts together for this post, that it does say a tanaan brew barrel and I was using a brew barrel in PoK not far from the main bank. But if it was because I was using the wrong brew barrel wouldn't it tell me "these items cannot be combined in this container" instead of telling me my skills aren't high enough to even make the attempt?

Lastly, where is a tanaan brew barrel at if not all brew barrels are tanaan?

Last little tidbit: The toon I'm doing this with is a low level tradeskiller. Could it be that I'm reading the "not high enough skill" message and taking it to mean my brewing skills when it really means my toon level?

You had it right. Your skill must be 220 to attempt the combine and it trivials at 212. However, if you use the geerlok 5% bonus, you can attempt the combine at 210 (210 * 105% = 220). So you can use it to skill up from 210 to 212.

I have never been stopped from doing a much higher level recipe than my skill.

Here is what EQ trader says about the Taanan Brew Barrel:

This is a Stationary Tradeskill Container:
Plane of Knowledge
tanaan brew barrel @ 13, 200, Eastern trader building
tanaan brew barrel @ 90, 260, Eastern trader building

Hmm...that's pretty messed up to need a skill higher than the one it supposedly becomes "easy" at.

Thanks for the info on the tanaan barrel, at least I was at the right one.

Guess I got a lot of combines to go so I can get brewing up there then......

Thanks again!

The ethereal combines are a special case - they're used to make the ornate tranquility armor and do indeed have a required effective skill level of 220 (attainable at 210 with a geerlok). They're definately the exception, rather than the rule - almost any other recipe will let you attempt the combine even if your far short of the trivial level. The ethereal combines are also commonly referred to as "free points" because the actual recipes are no-fail - if you do these recipies when your actual skill is 210 with a geerlok, you can do these with automatic success until your skill is 212 for a marginally better skillup chance.

Another thought, since your chosen tradeskill is brewing - it's one of the easiest and cheapest skills to get up to a decent range. From your skill level, I would suggest making Faydwer Shakers to 188 (all materials obtainable with a local brew barrel available in Freeport if you faction allows it - otherwise send a mule there, it's the easiest recipe for this range), then Minotaur Hero's Brews to 248 (all materials obtainable in pok, again local brew barrels available). For those of you just peeking in on this thread who are considering brewing as a TS, go ahead and start on Fetid Essences to 122 - it's rediculously cheap and easy, and who cares if you fail the combine 19 times out of 20 at the start - you're not doing this for the result. These three recipies will get you from ground zero to 248 in no time and very little money - after that you may be able to generate a profit with the skill if you're crafty.

You can brew to your hearts content in Abysmal Sea. Everything can be store bought up to Minotaur's Hero Brew.

After that you have to get groundspawn in Kaladim or forages in Draniks to proceed.

Kaladim Constitional takes you (albeit slow) to 300.

This seems to be as good a thread as any for this.
You all seem to know something about tradeskills. I am a newb to tradeskills; 140 baking 104 jewelcraft and ~140 pottery and low but rising skill level in all others.
My big question is if I get a skill over 200, does that mean I cannot raise another over the 200 mark. If I can, what is the cap on each?

Thanks in advance.

To raise your skills past 200 you will need to train in the new tannan AA's the max then becomes 300 something. not real sure how high i've never been past 200

I'm not really into tradeskills (carpal tunnel syndrome from Fletching, anyone?), but AFAIK there is one set of AAs that lets you bring a tradeskill (beyond the first one you master) past 200, and another set that raises the tradeskill cap from 250 (old max) to 300.

The new cap for Tradeskills is 300. I believe the AA now raises that cap to 350.
