Everquest - any improvementsFollow

#1 Nov 14 2005 at 12:42 PM Rating: Decent
I quit my EQ1 chars about 18m ago to spend some time on WOW, EQ2, Guild Wars.

I found each of these games very good at the time and often thought they were a great improvement on EQ1. Recently however, I have had a strange urge to return to EQ1 and I have been dreaming of two-boxing my Shammy and Warrior in POI, Veksar etc.

I have a few questions raleting to issues which contributed to my decision to leave EQ1:

Harsh death penalties

If I died two-boxing deep into Veksar I was usually unable to get a rez and either waited for my corpse to rot or paid a rogue an extortionate amount of money for a corpse-drag. (I know I could have asked guildies howeevr I always found myself reluctant to ask for their help). There is an arguement, I suppose, that the harsher the death-penalty the more exciting the game, however I considered the hours of downtime excessive.

Time consuming travel

The return-run from Veksar to the nearest town would take over an hour (two-boxing). Have their been further changes since POP to the travel system (so not including the POP books and LDON camps)?

LDONs

Plainly speaking, if I could have found a way to 2-box LDONs, I may not have left EQ1. Any thoughts on how to do this? Also has there been any significant content added for two boxers (levels 58 and 65).

Apologies for any similar previous posts and if these answers are on a sticky somewhere I'd appreciate a link, otherwise I'd be extremely grateful for any replies.

You are going to love a lot of the changes.

I'll let someone else link all the juicy threads.

Lol, I assumed it would be the good ol' EQ1, with a few zones added.

I think I'll should trawl through some of my old favourite websites in more detail.

With the DoN expansion they now have corpse summoners in the guild hall. You purchase an item from a vendor right there (price is based on level) and give it to the npc that summons corpses. Poof, your corpse is at your feet. There are usually clerics there offering to rez for donations, so getting a rez usually isn't a problem.

I don't know why it would take you over an hour to get to the nearest town from Veksar. The FV outpost is one zone over, and the book to PoK is also in the same zone. It usually takes me about 5 minutes to get to PoK from Veksar.

LDONs

Plainly speaking, if I could have found a way to 2-box LDONs, I may not have left EQ1. Any thoughts on how to do this? Also has there been any significant content added for two boxers (levels 58 and 65).

There's still a 3 person limit on them I believe, that also applies to the DoN instances. Not sure if there is a way around that. There of course has been new instances and zones added from new expansions. You shouldn't have too much trouble finding places to 2-box.

Aye, you'll want to at least get DoN (Dragons of Norrath). There is a new guild lobby where there is a corpse summon feature, which can eliminate nasty CR's.

Also, not sure why it took you so long to get to Veksar from PoK. Just hit the FV stone and run over to LOIO and then hit Veksar. Prolly 10 mins tops.

heh, well Kakar beat me to the punch...but good info nonetheless

Well, to answer your question about your corpse in veksar;

There is a new zone located off of PoK called the Guild Lobby. In the guild lobby there are corpse summoners. You buy this item and hand it to the corpse summoner and he will summon your corpse from anywhere in the world.

There are many other changes, guild hall, new bazaar, DoN missions, DoD monster missions. I'll let someone else fill you in on those.

An hour to get from Veksar to the nearest town??? Shouldn't no more than 10 mins at the very longest, even two boxing..set one character on auto follow when you get out of the dungeon and there you go!

Death penalites are the same, but you can now rez your corpse in the Guild Lobby.

I'd head over to the EQ main site and read up on the new expansions there to see what is included with each one.

You can really blame the game's "harsh death penalties" for this. If you don't want to ask for help, it's not the game's fault. Personally, I don't find the penalites THAT harsh anymore, esp with the advent of the Summoning Alter.

where do people go for pick up groups now? do i need to buy all the new expansions? the last one i bought was omens of war but i dont think i went there much. is there any solo areas for rangers? what about two boxing for ranger+cleric or for sk+shamans? do you still have to have a warrior to tank or have the other plate classes been improved? can the other priest classes heal now or are clerics a must still?

sorry for all the questions, just trying to see if i can get any more friends to play again or if im going to be on my own!

Depends on your level -or- Nektulous Forest for Fairy MM

No, but I would suggest getting DoN for the Guild Lobby/Hall Features, and DoDH for the Monster Missions (since that's what many folks are doing now)...so I guess..yes you should buy all the latest expansions.

Yes, same as before if not more of them. PoV is a good kiting spot.

what about it? It can be done, and those are some good combinations.

As a cleric, I ALMOST prefer a paladin over a warrior. However, either will do just the job just fine :)

IMHO Clerics are the way to go!

Another big change is that corpses no longer dissapear with your gear if you are dead for 7 days, instead they go to shadowrest, an underworld type zone that you can connect to from most home cities or PoK.

New potions are also availble that can heal over time, buff like a weak temp and give a form of clarity, they are not too expensive for your level appropriate version and it helps eliminate down time.

The Monster Missions, for the latest expansion, has No Death Penalties when you are in one of these misisons. Regular missions do but not MM.

Another thing added along the way is a task system of quests you can get in various zones. These quest add a bit of extra exp and some purpose to you grind, they are geared for newbie to around level 45-50 toons (not sure of your guys levels.)

Several new porting stones have been added into PoK. And the Magus system adds additonal ways to travel around.

There is now a lfg unitily that lets you see all the players lfg, as well as any group which choses to use it and are LFP. Where to go for a pickup group depends on your level , and since a wide level range hunts in veksar depending how deep you go I am not sure what you are at.

as a ranger, where should i go to level 65-70 if i was:
1) soloing
2) partnering with cleric
3) to get a pick up group
4) if, instead of a ranger, i was a shadow knight 2-boxing a shammy

Before even DoN, Shadowrest was added. There is an NPC who will collect your body and stick it in a graveyard (named Shadowrest) for you AFTER 7 days. Everything will still be on your body. Corpses will never disappear completely again. Smiley: smile

Edit:
Sorry - redundant info.

One thing to worry about is that with the server merge they deleted any toons who were both under 10 and had not been played for 6 months. If you had a low level bazaar mule with some valuable gear or even worse plat, then you might have lost it. I say plat loss is even worse then gear because gear that was valuable 18 months ago is not worth quite as much anymore, there are lots of new gear out there. If you did have a baz mule you lost try petitioning they might be able to get it back, but it might take a while.

I am sure there are lots of other changes and improvements not mentioned that you will notice and will help you.

I think you can just ask someone to join your group for a moment to get three in a group, grab your adventure and then they can leave the group. Not positive, though. I have been asked to do this for DoNs before. I don't two-box, though so I can't confirm it works for sure. Anyone?

Hi, I'm thinking of coming back to EQ as well after a long time away (last expansion i saw was LDON).

Has the monthly price for EQ gone down since EQ2 and such have come out? (US dollars plz).

Also what are all the expansions and such I would need, I would be starting from scratch as far as the cds and such.

One more question, what is a good computer set up for running EQ now at good or maximum graphics etc?

btw, if anyone out there still knows me, i used my forum name as my mains name on Quellious long ago when i was part of the small Knights of the Wolf Cult guild. thanks
