Nearly managed to kill my first Frost Giant all by myself this morning!

It all went really well, went to the Great Divide, buffed pet and myself, activated even Lesson of the Devoted and Infusion of the Faithful. Didn't give my pet his proc as that's a huge aggro creator. Told my pet to guard at the PoK book, went off and found a white con (lvl 34) Frost Giant Scout not too far away. DoT, second DoT, return to book, pet attack, Ice Spear to keep aggro, run in circles. Recasted DoTs whenever they faded (and got hit a few times while doing that). Threw in an Ice Spear from time to time to keep aggro, but 50% of them were resisted (Frost Giant = high save vs. cold?).

I took him down to 25%, me 68% and my pet 100%. Then my pet out-aggroed me, my spells didn't land, bam - pet dead. I thought that I could tank him from then on, but man was I wrong... Got a few hits, and health went down really fast. Managed to land another DoT and ran in circles again. My health was down to 20%, mana about 20%. And then: Fizzle, fizzle, fizzle, bam, bam. Low on mana, low on health. Smiley: glare

When I zoned to PoK, it read:
Frost Giant: Health 16%
Me: Health 12%, Mana 5%

I was so close, so close!!! Smiley: motz

Note: This whole story may be no big deal for you, but I never kited before, only tanked. Just wanted to share this experience...

BBot, sure, kiting is different, and a great experience :)

as to not buffing the pet with the proc, why? iirc, as long as YOU are in melee range, you will always be the one the mob is beating on.

else, for aggro kiting, I'd just slow, nuke, dot, and once he is down to 95 you can sick your pet (just ensure pets taunt is switched off).

have fun :)

PS: as for me, last night it was the frist time I quadded in Maidens Eye (toilers, near the lake). didn't die, and managed about 6 quads, where I had to abandon only one (adds due to unknown pathing). So I can very well relate to your post - this "first time experience" is just great Smiley: smile

In my experience (my bsty is 52 now), at these early levels we just don't have the proper tools for any efficient aggro kiting. Doing so will most likely eat up yer whole bar of mana. Oh (and I'm sure you did) make sure to take off /pet taunt.

Also, taking off the pet proc at these levels drastically reduces overall dps.

Lol, when I read that, I had an idea:

The other side of the story

"Guys, you won't believe what happened to me this morning… I was scouting the zone near Thurgadin entrance, when suddenly I felt really ill. I turned around, and there was a dirty little ogre, apparently casting something on me. I tried to catch him, but that little beast was fast! After a minute or so of chasing him, suddenly a brown bear started to attack me. A brown bear! You ever seen a brown bear around here?

I just ignored it, as that ******* ogre didn't stop casting spells on me... Landed a few hits on him, but couldn't really catch him. That bear was getting nasty and I started feeling exhausted, so I turned around and flattened him. The ogre cringed and finally stopped running, so I started beating him. This tiny bugger realized that he didn't have a chance and took off, but I followed him. And - you won't believe it - suddenly he disappeared. Yes, he really went 'poof!' I swear, if I ever see this beast again, I'll..."

An ogre? or an orc?

Good job on the giant. You'll get um next time. I was in GD with my 34 BL not too long ago, but along with a 34 Shammy. We took the giants ok, not sure if I coulda soloed one or not though I should try. I know my paly was pawned at 39 trying to solo FG's, my ranger was pretty easily able to take one out at 39 but used gobs of mana doing it. My wiz was blasting their butts all over the hill by about 32.

I love watching the Giants fall over after you kill em!

Everything is in slow mo, and you hear there deep scream and until they hit the ground.

Sorry, missed the whole point of that story. It's early, eh.

Thanks for two very nice writeups. My Bl is only 28 and is a ways off from GD.
One word of advice, in a situation where you will be kiting, having flash of light memmed can be useful. It may buy you a few seconds of sitting to med while the mob runs off.

Not that I use that spell a lot.

Couple things.

Your Ogre should not be killing Frost Giants as you *should* have the same deity. You should be killing Dorfs! hehehehe

With DoD enchanters can purchase (from merchant in The Undershore) a level 54 spell Illusion Orc.

That's easy. Get that Coldain faction, finish your shawl quests, then turn around and slaughter countless dwarfs until you fix your Kromzek and Kromrif faction.

It's so simple!

This idea will become more and more appealing as you progress through the shawl quest, no doubt.

Was pet taunt on? That would explain why it had such good agro. When u kite mobs as a pet class it is important to have pet taunt off.

I cannot imagine how u could get a mob down to 25%, then send in pet, and it somehow gets agro unless it was taunting. When kiting always turn taunt off.

When it comes to BST pets I would believe it.

I have formed many kiting groups late at night when tanks are nowhere to be found. I know when I have established an agro lock on a mob and I know how to keep it. The one and only class I have had any problems with as far as agro is a BST.

I am not saying no other class can pull agro from a dru that's trying to keep it, but I will say a BST can do it with very little effort.

Don't underestimate the DPS a BST pet can dish out. You would be surprised.

I didn't know that one could turn off pet taunt. In fact, I thought that it would be great if it was possible... Smiley: blush

Anyway, I tried it again this morning.

AND I TOOK HIM DOWN! Smiley: grin

It didn't start as good as yesterday; I turned off pet taunt, but gave my pet the proc buff (as Kajolus suggested). Started kiting a yellow con Frost Giant, the pet proced 2-3 times and got aggro. Couldn't get the giant off, and the pet died when he was still at about 80% health. I just continued kiting, and it took about 10 minutes and 90% of my mana bar until he was down to 19% health and started running. Then it was easy.

Got 3 plat and some exp, but it was less than I expected.

The other side of the story:

"Anyone seen Khellren? He didn't return for lunch..."

Edit: Wow, didn't realize it... my 500th post! Smiley: yippee
