On Povar, my Dwarf Paladin recently hit 40 (woot) and I've been following the DoN cultural armor path, so I've been thinking about gearing up towards the expert level. The task to get your symbol book for that level has you going into Kedge Keep and killing 40 mermaids and looting 10 Deepwater Inks (this is all I can see so far...so who knows what comes next). Last night I poked my head in for the first time to check it out. I 2 box with a chanter (level 38). I realize I am probably a bit low and need to level some more....but just wanted to check out the entrance area. I cleared the first room of swordfish, and as I expected, the whole environment is going to take some getting used to.

Since my goal is the mermaids (I don't even know where they are), I'm looking for some tips on how to go about this. Has anyone done this task? Any tips on aggro in this place? Will greenies leave you alone if you leave them alone? Is it even doable with the combo I have (once I get them a little higher of course).

Anxious to hear any and all experiences here.

The mermaids are pretty common mobs once you get past the entrance. There are one or two in each room iir. The green's may agro on you as I doubt that you are too terrible much higher than them in level.

The agro range is about average, but remember the third demension! You can agro stuff from above and below you.

I'm not much of an expert but this Guide by Phreekitty is pretty comprehensive.

First thing you need to do is take care of the underwater breathing thing.

Then, get invisibilty somehow and scout out the place. You will get used to the tunnels and the up and down but it takes a while. I would suggest taking the chanter down there to scout to save on invis potions. Chanter also has EB spell if nothing else (bring lots of fish scales). Have gate loaded and bind near the entrance just in case.

Mermaids are common in a few areas and at your level you will definately want crowd control so boxing the chanter is a good idea.

As mentioned, you get aggro in 3 dimensions.

No. This is the biggest problem you will face. Mobs aggro here even at level 70. This is the case with all old world "uber" zones including The Hole, Kedge Keep and Nagafens Lair.

Because of the green aggro issue, you will need a solid full group at that level.

I would not rely on Enduring Breath spells just in case you get dispelled or it fades at the wrong time. EB items are fairly cheap these days and you can even quest a few.
