They later on become better at it, however at lower level they do seem kinda weak. The slow spells at higher levels will last longer and work better. Also you get a pet at some point (used to be lvl 35, maybe sooner since they changed spells?).

First pet is at level 32. Though you get a charm animal spell at around 22 I think. Yes, shammys can solo. Though not as well as some classes.

Shamans are among the best soloers in the game once they reach 65-70 and pretty darn good on the way up there. I'd bet on a Shaman vs. a Necro at the end game. The Charm Animal spell you get early on is ok but I wouldn't rely on it. First, you need to get to a zone that has worthwhile animals to charm...then you gotta deal w/ it after charm breaks w/o any kind of mezzing other than a recharm. Once you get your first doggie, things are smooth. Also, don't forget to Cannibalize yourself when you get the chance...stick a regen on yourself then start chewing away...

It is slightly harder to solo at lower levels. When i was playing my shaman years ago I learned to treat him as a Pally with better healing spells and less hp/ac(made up for by slow and the first weaken spell). The low level poison dots are hardly worth the mana till you get your first canni and can boost your mana up easier.

With a combination of buffs, haste, slows, DoTs, and pets, I can solo my 51 shaman very effectively, some of the time for better exp that I could get in a group. The low levels are difficult, but tough it out and you'll learn to love the class.

One thing people didnt really mention was the down time. Shammy soloing until the very high levels and AA abilities is mana intensive and requires some downtime. Even with canni it takes a little while to get back on your feet. Once you get caaai IV your starting to turn the corner. The new shammy made potions though really cut into this downtime so dont be afraid to TS up your alchemy skill.

Solo Shammy (the early years):

Learn to kite. Shammy's have a tough time tanking, but I could kite yellows and reds around level 15-20. Combine with root-rotting.

Downtime is a problem sometimes. I always tried NOT to take damage since HP==MANA for a Shammy. Carry lots of bandages.

or Team up with a tank for an easier time...

Shaman's can deffinitely solo. I always think of my Shaman as a "big game hunter" - he is best at red and yellow /cons. Mowing through blues is not what a Shaman is best at, but kiting a big mob is great fun. Until the higher levels you'll have some down time, but a Shaman is really a pretty self sufficient solo character. I know you can take reds through level 57 at least. Best to think of the pet as just another DOT till you get to the higher levels though.

shaman can solo very well espcially at higher levels. shamans can solo some badass mobs/zones for exp and/or loot that no other classes can.

Shaman become compotent soloers in their 40's. The combintaion of Stoic, Canni 3 and a decent slow make it quite easy.

My shammy has soloed mobs in his mid 50's the one thing about them though is that they have really weak DoTs untillthe 40's so they aren't the greatest at root DoTting but they can still hold their own. on nice thing though is that you have a never ending SoW supply so make sure it's got plenty of time incase you have to abort the pull.

The characters who solo the unthinkable did not solo their way to that gear and skill level. They first fully geared themselves through nightly 54 person raids for up to 6 years and worked on 500-1200 AAs in the same time period, mostly in groups.

A Shaman or any other class who solos from 1 to 70 and does not raid or do one groupable content such as MPG trials and DoN crystal farming will not be able to solo Vallon Zek. Come to think of it, a fully DoN geared Shaman will not be able to either.

Why is this never pointed out when we hear Fuzzykitten the Beastlord soloed whathisface or when we hear Legolazz the Ranger soloed the Enchanter epic 1.0?

..... Because for most people they are not asking if they can exclusively solo from 1 to 70. They are asking if they can solo when groups are not available, if they only have a short time to play, if thye need to go someplace specific to finish a quest etc etc.

I guarantee you can solo higher con mobs, you just haven't learned how yet. You need to learn the techinques, and find suitable locations.

Doesn't matter. While Wisdom and Mana gear will help you solo longer, and AC and HP gear will help you melee better, (and HP gear will help with mana, once you get Canni.) there are plenty of great low level drops for Shamans out there. I don't know how the armor quests are for the other races, but the Barbarian newbie armor is outstanding. Especially the wrist and chest pieces.

Yes, it does get easier. You're just playing a crappy hybrid at this point. Shamans start to shine in their 20s, when they start getting the first low level versions of their signature spells.

Don't be so hard on yourself. You're learning a new class. Take the time to enjoy it, and learn it completely. You'll be amazed at how much more you're capable of doing later, because it's difficult now. Now is the time to learn the basics.

By all accounts, we solo well, if not quickly. (I'm not that far along yet.)

Finish your newbie armor quests. (If you haven't already) Farm the the Green Goblins in BB for a couple hundred plat, and pick up gear on the cheap. Don't spend more than 200pp on a single piece, untill you know your shaman better.

The one exception to this might be for a haste item. It's important for you to take time fighting blues to build your weapon/offense/defense skills now, while it's still easy to do. It gets harder the longer you wait, and a haste item with a low delay weapon will help you do this quicker. Make sure you remember to keep Dex and Agi buffs up for quicker skill ups.

For soloing locations, check out South Karana or Dawnshroud Peaks. DSP might be a little high for you yet, but you can probably kill Aviaks in SK at your level. You'll usually want to pick zones with sparse or non social mob populations, so you can kite without picking up adds.

Check out the threads in the shaman forum. We have a lot of knowledgeable shammies that post here.

The low level shaman DoTs were reworked a few months back. Low level DoTs are far more effective now.
