General Pet question.....Follow

As an Enchanter I never really geared my pet, they die so fast I never thought it worth the effort and just used my buffs. In the old days I used to be able to give low delay weapons to increase attack speed, but they stopped that.

I'm thinking of making a Mage now. I've been reading up and I hear about the difference the summoned gear can make. My question is this.... If I buy a set of cheap armor, all different parts and give it to my pet, will it make a difference? Just as an example, let's say I give it Bronze armor. Also, does size matter?(keep that clean please. No perv answers. hehe)

basicaly its like this.

if you give your pet gear, be it weapons or armor, the pet will decide what is best and use that.

so if you give a 29th pet cloth armor it should not use this as it is not as good as its natural armor, yet if you give it Plate armor that is better then its natural armor (some of the mage summoned stuff) it should equipe that gear.

as for weapons. ive seen heard so many different things its not even funny.

on lower level pets i have seen weapons make a HUGE differance in their ability to hit harder, not more often, but harder. it seems the attack speed of pets is set unless hasted via item or spell. the higher level mage summoned weapons do hit much harder then 4th-12th level pets do without weapons.

with the higher end belt and muzzle the pets at lower levels are almost unstoppable. the haste seems to fully effect them, note i said seems, and i know the AC+, STR+, HP+ does affect them 100%.

i have a 12th mage im playing with just as a toy. took some old junk gear i had laying around and gave it to the new mage toy.

if i take some coin and hit PoK and donnate to a 63+ mage to summon full pet gear (i normaly get 2 sets or muzzle, belt, and only 2 swords as my pets can not DW yet) and i get mana preserving item, spell haste, and DD my little mage can solo things that are way out of his league under normal situations.

at 8th i took my mage to the mids in nek forest. with the white cloaked goodies love to hang out. one of them at 8th is deep red. my pet almost soloed him. i had to heal him 1 time with my cleric and i nuked the guy 3 times before he fell.

at 12th the guy can still be yellow, but more often is only even con. my 12th pet owns him with that gear and i only cast 1 time just to get 100% of the xp for the kill.

hope that helps a bit.

Yes, armor helps your pet not get hit so bad.

When I was leveling my Tailoring, I would give my BL pet a full set of hopperhide armor and it would significantly increase his ability to survive in battle.

I concur with Singdal though. . . . .forget the armor, go with the Fists of Ixbalt, Muzzle of Mardu and the summoned Girdle or Belt (can't remember the names on those). Buying those is like power leveling. With these pet doesn't need armor as they kill things so fast they barely get hit.

At the lower levels giving your pet armor makes a noticable difference (particularly if you can get it the level 56 Muzzle of Mardu for haste and the level 64 Girdle of Magi'Kot for the 500 HP). The summoned armor a mage can get for pets helps at lower levels, but at the high end is probably not really significant (the muzzle and girdle still are).

The first set of pet focus items you can get from the Temple of Sol Ro quests will make your pets better and is definately something to get by the time you reach the late 20s / early30s (sooner if you can get help getting what you need from Najena).

When giving your pet weapons ignore the delay on the weapon - they don't use it, though I believe if they already have a weapon they will use the lower delay one.

I don't know how it affects Mage pets, but for Necros the first few pets should be given weapons. For starters, weapon damage only takes effect if half the weapon's DMG is greater than the pet's innate attack. Thus I would give my skelly a rusty scythe (heh heh) or, say, a rusty 2hsword and that would up the damage. Once you get to level 20? I think the pets will start to dual wield (albeit poorly) when given two weapons. DMG, delay are ignored. After 34 or 39, the pets dual attack without weapons. Pets proc weapons like other NPCs do, ie give a pet a Velium weapon and he will proc like mad. But you'll be summoning good proc weapons anyways.
I think the top Mage website is magecompendium.com, but my browser is hitching up a bit. Give that place a look, they probably have specifics on pet useage.
