Hey Everyone,
I'm running an Everquest websurvey as part of my senior thesis for psychology. Its self-funded and I want to publish my results when I'm done, but first I need as many respondents as possible. It'll only take 3 minutes and there are no pop-ups or ads. Please spread the word!

You are the third one to post such a thing in the last 2 months. I fear, as has been said before, that this thesis will portray the EverQuest community in a negative way. One does not study the motivation behind behaviors one does not think to be harmful.

Hrmmm... Just took a look at the survey and I must say, I'm convinced that we are to be portrayed as hopeless addicts living in out mother's basements.

No not at all, but I feel as guilty as hell about wasting 20 minutes of my life watching "Cops" on Fox last night.

Well, yes of course. But not as much as I look forward to that shot of Jack Daniels when I get home.

Sadly, yes. But I'm working on it.

Nothing like a bunch of highly loaded questions to prove your preconceptions.

Not that the "social sciences" ever were overly laden with credibility, but recent examples are bewildering. These are the people supposedly shaping our thinking about society, conscience, ethics??

These surveys crack me up.

I remember a friend once made fun of me while we were out because I picked up SoV (Had just come out OH THE GLEE)
He was saying I spend too much time playing and the usual rhetoric.

I decided to fight back and asked him how often he watches TV. I figured out he watched about 7 hours of TV on a weekday.
That is 35 hours a week...
1820 hours a year...
That is 109,200 hours spent watching TV if he lives to be 70.
Just counting weekdays and he gets no return.
There is no socialization or mental stimulation.
Although it is true that at times EQ can be quite boring you are always more actively involved then sitting in front of the television.

So here is a survey for you.

How often do you think it is your job to judge others?
Once a day
Twice a day
Weekly
Monthly

Do you think that you are better then anyone?
Yes
No

Do you think people who spend weekends away from their families fishing in return streams (streams where you cannot keep the fish) are wasting time?
Yes
No

Are you a tool who needs to get a life and stop telling other people they don't have one?
Damn straight.

I make good money and I'll do with it as I please. If a game is my hobby then so be it. I go out, I have friends, I see my family, and go out on dates. I have a good job; a great retirement package, outstanding health insurance and I plenty of time to play. What do you do?

You make up surveys because you think you have an original idea. You do not. People have pointed their finger at video games as an addiction since they crept into malls in the form of big boxes. As they did for TV and Radio before it.

You want a thesis? How about the effects of only having to work 8 hours per day to survive as opposed to the 10-12+ that was the norm until and even during the industrial revolution on our mindset?

There now you can stop acting superior.

I've yet to see one of these things where they actually want to READ answers instead of check bubbles...perhaps if you asked me questions and allowed me to answer in my own words i might take your little survey...instead you give me a bubble and try to stack everyone in a "category" as apparently in your world everyone fits in nice little boxes with neatly typed labels.
I suggest changing your little "survey" to eqPOLLdotnet that would seem more accurate...oo wait...paint pretty flowers on it and ask if we've ever kissed a boy and you could call it eqSlamBookdotnet.

Now go away, or we shall taunt you a second time!

This survey is being run by a psychology student at the University of Massachusetts to better understand the motivation of Everquest players and the effects of gameplay on every day life.

Read - To what extent does EverQuest negatively effect the lives of those who play it. The problem with studies like this is that the individual always comes into the study with preconceived notions about those whom they are studying.

It seems that every time these studies are conducted the question is always "How harmful is EverQuest?". Perhaps the question needs to be "Is EverQuest harmful?" It'll never happen, but it's something to hope for. I think that if that question were asked, it would come to light that the vast majority of us are normal productive members of society, with spouses/SO's who just play a video game.

In other words, psyche students, until you can study EQ players fairly, GO AWAY!!!! Go study SWG players or something.

The survey is complete and utter crap. I made an extensive search in hopes it is a hoax, but it seems it isn't. The domain is registered under his name although for some reason It has a North Carolina address, perhaps he is from there.

Sadly once more life has proven that book smarts, intelligence and common sense do not necessarily accompany each other. The guy was an honor English major and made dean's list a few times. Apparently he is now a phychology student, even though he doesn't appear on any of their reseach lists or the graduate student directory.

I am not sure what the hell he thinks he is doing but every phychological study that people are asked to participate REQUIRE subjects to be briefed before the study and debriefed after their participation in the study. I would be really interested to see his Thesis and his conclusions. My first Bachelor was in Philosophy and minor in Phychology, so I would love to pick his logic apart word for word.

What is the most disturbing thing of all is that one of Faculty mentioned to contact "Melinda Novac" is a biological phychologist that specializes in MONKEYS......In motivation, learning, performance etc.. etc.. of MONKEYS.....FREAKING MONKEYS. In particular most her published work is on rhesus monkeys not even the great apes.

For some reason I get this picture in my head of the guy holding his survey, stepping on a stone and showing it to the U Mass community, like the monkey in Lion King scene.

WTF you say? wtf indeed!!!
