You have been unsuccessful at stealing . . .Follow

Ok I got my rogue to level 8 trying to complete the bloody newbie armour mission - why is this significantly more tricky than the barbarian equivelent?

Anyway I realised I could now sneak, pickpocket and hide.

I am now wanting to know how I can pickpocket. I am level 55 Pickpocketing and my sneak is something similar.

I start by sneaking up to an NPC (either a guard or a vendor) and click pickpocket.

I have never once been successful and 1 in 3 times I get owned by the NPC

What am I doing wrong?

Cheers for any advice
Woody

Edit - I am level 45 not 55.

You probably shouldn't be pickpocketing anything that can whup you so fast. How would you like a guy stealing from you?

The way to get pick pocket up is to do it in a group. Whenever pick pocket pops just turn off your auto attack, pickpocket quickly, and re auto-attack. That will bring it up quickly, but now you are taking the groups money and items. In this day and age of twinks they probably won't care but you should let them know you are doing it.

You probably won't be able to have a successful pickpocket extravaganza until you are much higher but keep it in practice and then when you do do it in the future you will be more successful and they pickpocketee won't agro as often if you do fail.

pick pocket is an aggro generating action, you really should not be doing it to 'Red' con mobs. So no your not really doing it correctly. if you are with friends <or you don't care since you are a rogue> you should be doing it in combat using the following hotkey

line 1: /attack
Line 2: /doability 1 <acording to where your pick pocket is in your ability page>
line 3: /attack

this will turn your attack off, pick pocket and then turn attack back on.

on a side issue that is the same way to lose aggro in a fight but substitue hide for pick pocket and stay still.

Thanks for the advice.

I have found that you can pickpocket a soulbinder and he wont agro so I spammed it until capped (I am still only level 8)

It was not the levelling of pickpocket that really concerns me but more the fact that I have never looted anything yet and wondered if I was doing somwething wrong.

Do I have to be in combat to pickpocket then?

No and your idea with the soulbinder is a good one </em notes it down for future training> It's just the most oppertune time to do so.

ah cool

the soulbinder I am using is the one in the treehouse in Faydark and he hasn't agroed me yet.

So what happens when you pickpocket someone - do you get cash - or object or both?

Thanks for advice

You won't get anything from pickpocketing unless the mob has something to give. Merchants don't carry loot so you'll never get anything from pickpocketing them. What you steal is removed from the mobs normal loot, so if a mob has 1pp 3sp and you pickpocket it for 2sp, the mob will drop 1pp 1sp. There's no special "pickpocket" loot table.

As for what you can steal, coin and nonmagic, non-Lore and non-No Drop items may be flitched. You'll mainly see objects in the form of gems, research bits and occassionally vendor loot like orc pawn scalps, frayed fedoras, etc depending on what you're stealing from.

I would never make that assumption.

ROAR

finally got it to work - looting 2 silver pieces off orcs in crushbone :)

Will higher mobs drop more and if so - is there a chance I can sneak up behind them and loot without them seeing me using Sneak & Loot (then run like a whippet on steroids when it fails) ;) because that would be cool.

Thanks again for advice

Yes, you can sneak/hide up on things, UNHIDE, but do not stop sneaking. Be sure you stay behind the mob and out of the line of sight of any other hostile mobs. Pick his pocket, and immediately rehide.

What you can get from a mob depends on what the mob has. Most mobs don't carry much in the way of cash, but you can pick anything that is not equipped, not magic .. (might be other restrictions, such as Lore, or No drop.. not sure, been a while since I played a rogue).

Giants are a favorite target of rogues, they tend to have lots of plat. Best I ever did was 22pp on one pass. Have also lifted lots of different gems and quest items such as orc scalps.

If you're in a group, just ask to be the Master Looter, that way you can pick to your hearts delight to keep the skill up, and still make sure everyone gets their fair share.

You rather sound as if you are looking to pickpocketing to be a serious way of gaining money. It isn't. It is a skill you need for your epic but it is at best a distraction from what you should be doing which is damaging the mob.

Soulbinders will never yield any cash but they never aggro either. Have to be the old ones with no hp bar though. PoK soulbinder doesn't work.

In a busy zone trying the Sneak/hide and run away fast idea is likely to cause trains and make you unpopular.

Ah cool

Basically my Rogue isn't my main char and I just want to use her to play as a break for powerlevelling. I enjoy the fact she has completely different abilities to my other chars (mainly casters) and she doesn't need the obscene amount of money my casters do as I dont care if she levels or not.

If she can pickpocket a couple of plat an hour just to buy arrow materials I will be happy. If by fluke she pulls a large amount of plat out in one go I would probably log onto her mopre just for the

"w00t - 10pp of that Hill Billy Giant" factor.

If not it wont bother me - I dont plan to make serious cash off pickpocketing - just the laugh

Cheers
