Beware users of Everquestdruids.comFollow

#1 Feb 21 2004 at 5:22 PM Rating: Decent
Everquestdruids.com was started by Vovin when EQDruids.com got bought out by Yantis. All well and good. Recently however, vovin has allowed articles from Everquestdruids.com to be posted on RpgExpert.com, a site owned and operated by Yantis. Rpgexpert.com pays for content -- a quick whois reveals that it is registered to Yantis, and the paypal payments come from accounts@cannotlinkto. Looks like you guys may be in for yantisx2 the first time Yantis offers Vovin money for the site. The more interesting part? Vovin hasn't just stuck to submitting guides he wrote himself. I am curious if Marduk got any money for http://www.rpgexpert.com/index.php?art/id:1365

Well I wrote the articles, took me day's of MY time. My brother is marduk and yes he got paid for it. I pay for the site out of my pocket which has gotten quite expensive in the last month. So if I have to sell a article or two to keep Everquestdruids a ad free site I don't see the harm in that if you bothered looking there are many prominent site admins that submit articles to RPG expert. And anyway's it's either that or somone steals them and sells them to RPG expert which is what happened in the first place. Have a look at the top rated articles. Notice any well know website admins? There are more than 1. Everquest Druids will alway's be ad free, and it's not for sale. I'd be happy to stop selling ads if you would be willing to fork over the money to pay the hosting fees.

Vovin, your articles are always well thought out and enjoyed by me. They have helped me immensely. By the way I read them on your sight long before they were offered up to RPG, who by the way, is giving you full credit and thanks for your articles. Keep up the good work!

After thinking about just how much i use your sight, and realizing that it is quite a bit... accept my donation with all my gratitude.

Thanks alwayslost. Let me explain my situation so that everyone can see and understand.

I didn't expect the Everquest Druids site to be so popular or cost so much in bandwith. Especially in the second month, Every day the hits increase and the bandwith goes up. It's only 2 months old and it's very popular it's not only visited by druids all classes come there. I have seen links on mage, wizzy, chanter etc... boards. Lemme keep it real. I got 3 choices.

1 Banner ads. That's a nono.
2 Shut down when the site got too expensive. Didn't wanna do that after all the work I put in.
3 Sell a few articles.

I didn't even consider selling articles until somone stole one of mine off of my site and I seen it. I contacted them rather peeved and they took it down. First I refused the payment but after a little while I came to realise that this may very well be the only way I can afford to keep the site up. So I had to bite the bullet and do it. The paypal donation system has netted less than 4 dollars. It just isnt cutting it. I have spent 2 months writing for the everquestdruids site 4-5 hours a day, every day. The site has more druid info NOT STOLEN from anyone else than any other site out there, totally update and original content. I research everything and confirmn it's right. I don't ask you to look at banner ads or popups or anything, you can come to the site clean and neat and get the info that you need. Simple as that. But I can't spend hours a writing and then turn around and pay my hard earned money to keep the site up too. Don't you think that's just a little too much for just one person to do?

I do not object to what you did, but I never switched from EQdruids to everquestdruids. What you did is in no way, shape, or form different from what happened to EQdruids

Something struck me as odd about your post. For somone who seems to be totally against the Plat sales you sure know alot about that site. I looked on rpg expert and no where could I find the paypal accounts information you stated, Nowhere. There could only be 2 way's you would know the info on their paypal account. If you woked for them or you yourself had sold them a article. The thing that made me wonder if you worked for them was. This post was a perfect way for you to spam rpg expert. Placing your spam link as a complaint about somone else would not get the post deleted but if you spammed it outright you know it would be. Even if you don't work for yantis you sure know alot about that site. Suffice to say you have spent alot of time there. And if you do not object why on earth did you post this topic?

yes, I have written for them. I, however, would rather not see the EQDruids community that migrated to Everquestdruids.com sold out a second time.

Lesser of 2 evils. Had vovin not made the EverQuestDruids website then there would be no site for druids that didn't have supersales spam all over it. If he wanted to he could have sold out already to yantis or at least let him put some ads up. He did not. Instead he sold a few of his articles. If you don't go to the RPG expert site you won't see them. If you do go there you already know about yantis. But at least when you visit EverQuestDruids you don't see any of the ads like you see on EQ Druids. Alot of the class specific boards are selling articles to RPG expert. I see 3 of the biggest class boards right on the main page. Unlike alla's class boards have no sponsors or way's of paying the bills. This appears to be the only other alternative.

No offense to NorrathDruids But they never actually done anything to the site. They have the epic, spell lists -Needs to be updated- , and a list of druid AA's -Also needs to be updated- but that's it. All the other links lead to blank pages. Last time they added anything to the site was over a month ago. Theyre good people I do check in from time to time but I wouldn't consider them a site more like a forum like TDG.

I really wish this would just drop. First there is no need for competition. Most people visit several sites for their info, not just one. So a "who's the best" match is just silly. Let's end this before it winds up a argument.

It is totally amazing to me. Do people think web sites spring up with no work and no expenses.

It it VERY expensive. The more people that visit your site, the more pages they view, the more hosting costs are. Then there is the smaller yearly fee to own the URL itself, and the computers and software needed. This does not take into account the actual work on EACH page you view.

Some choices:
1) Ask people to pay a fee for use of site.
2) Accept advertising on the site.
3) Be born so rich that you do not need any money or help from anyone.
4) Be altruistic, willing to give all your time and effort and live in poverty, or support yourself with a job and give big amounts of free time to the site.

I vote for 3, but sorry not everybody running a fan site is in that boat.

actually, I have no objection to advertising, donation drives, or even a membership fee. I am a premium memberof alla, and a ezsupporter. I would not of even noticed had Vovin not split his site off from EQDruids because the people who are now helping pay his hosting costs were paying EQdruids hosting costs.
