Hey Everyone! i am going to be starting up EQ again next month (i havent been playing for about 6 months) and was wondering what the best class would be to be as a clean new start? i was thinking ranger because i ,loooove shooting that bow its so fun. but i am not going to raise my old acnt , i had a 47 bstlrd on it with pretty good equip but as firned got on and lost my body somewhere so ... i lost all my items. anyway, would a ranger be a good choice to start or should i be something like a mage who doesnt really need armor, just mana? thnx .. hmm maybe ill start a mage instead i looooove them pets

As always, "What class should I play" isn't an easy question for other people to answer. It depends so much on what you want to get out of the game that it makes it hard for anyone to say.

How involved do you want to be in the "action" - there's a range from Warrior (up close and personal) all the way out to Cleric and Enchanter (watching with interest)[1]

EQ as a game is so varied that it's very hard to make generalisations. The only decent advice is "do what you think you'll enjoy, and don't be afraid to have a couple of false starts".

[1] I'm aware that this is a gross generalisation, particularly about Clerics and Enchanters.

well, I want to be able to have fun with my characvter. as well as not needing equipment to play jhim (i will do the newbie armor quest that start at my guildmaster) for some so-so equipment. so i want a class that could do nto so bad naked.thats why i was thinking mage or ranger. i like the ranger because of the ablilty to shoot arrows and do most damage with them having special abilities with them and junk. but rangers are more warrior with minor spells thats why i was thinking mage. buyt mages arent a up close fighting class. i want to have fun and fight ewith my naked character as well as be able to stand back and still be as good. so maybe a shadowknigght? i generally like the kelethin starting classes ... which are mostly wood elves. they are fun to play and the newbie quests there are generally easy (as well as they are not KOS everywhere).or maybe ill be a beastlord they seem to be what im saying.. altho i played my bstlrd out it may be fin to restart another one...

Don't get carried away with rangers "shooting arrows". That becomes really useful at a fairly high level. Nothing is more annoying than having a 20's or 30's ranger standing back and shooting arrows instead of meleeing. They are doing a small fraction of the damage they could do with a couple of halfway decent swords.

That said ranger is a fun class for many other reasons and can tank ok for many levels as well as track and solo using animal fear spells.

I didn't actually understand much of your post, especially how you lost your beastlord. However the difference between ranger and mage is pretty extreme. I can't really figure out what you are looking for.

Play whatever race or class suits your fancy. A magician would be a logical choice for a first character with no cash, since you can summon a variety of very useful items in lieu of buying them. Out of all the caster classes both necros and magicians can solo quite well. The only downside to playing a mage is not being able to root & lull, with the root ability only being through your earth elemental pet. I've never found this a huge problem as long as you understand your limits. If you liked having a pet as a Beastlord you might enjoy the magician class as well.

Well thnx to all of u for posting (didnt help any but still...) now about howe i "lost" my beastlord. The beastlord wasnt mine in the firstplace but a friends who quit and gave em his account. later after i gained about 4 levels on him he decided he wanted to play again. about 2 months later he is complaining to me because he cant get his body out of the crystal caversns (i think it was them i forgot) but he kept on trying and eventually he found out his body was stuck in a wall or something *cough ****** cough* so now there a naked lv 46 beastlord (who was 48 when i was playing him) now im not lookng for a solo class, im looking for a good starter class that is fgun (which rules out enchanters) but i may start a ranger. d.starting out my bow will work nice excerpt for a few places i will go. if i play a ranger i am going to stay in kelething///gfay for a few then Crushbone wich are both good places to use arrows.1. to pull and 2. uhhh to hit ... at lv 1 my ranger could do 20 dmg and with his weapons he did 10 max (this was before i retired) i dont know if im making any sense to any of you i guess im just posting and making my own decisions/talking to myself but i have a better idea.

forget all this and im just gonna make a character, any character, and if its fun ill keep if not ill remake. problem solved. now im gonna go read some of these other posts see how nozy i can be

Cobra101 i'm not trying to start a arguement but the way i see most rangers besides myself nowadays they could use bows for a lot more damage than with their swords. A lot of rangers get very nice (non level req/rec) bows that go fast and could hit more often with that than with a sword and for more damage.
