Before we start this isn't a moan that it takes almost 10 minutes to get from desktop in game.

The thing I am trying to get around is the initial 'file scan' at the beginning. I have 3 chars on the same server and if I decide I want to tradeskill for 20 mins while my mates go for their dinner I have to log completely out to desktop or I get an annoying curser staying in the middle of the screen. This only leaves me a few minutes of tradeskilling.

I know there won't have been any file changes from logging out to back in - is there a way to speed this up or avoid file scanning altogether?

As I say not a moan but was hoping there is an easy solution. If there isn't then there isn't.

Cheers

You can't avoid the file scan - and the rest is a matter of your PC AND your connection.

With a Pentium 4 3200 MHz and 512 RAM and a cable modem 128kb you start 3 minutes playing from hitting the desktop icon. But it took 10 minutes on my old PC too....

Alternatively, you can just hit Alt+Enter to go from full screen mode to window mode and then hit Alt+Enter again to go back to full screen mode and you will lose the annoying cursor. :-)

oh, almost forgot, you may have to hit Alt+Enter two or three times in window mode before it goes back to full screen. I think the program spends some time processing things when you switch so it may not be done depending on how fast you try to switch back.

Hope that helps!

EQW is your friend

if you are patched up to date, then use this little toy for playing EQ in windowed mode, and you can also bypass the patcher without any ill effects.

this works way better then SoE vs of windowedEQ, its faster, and more stable too IMHO.

You can actually pull the connection during the file scan and it'll fill all the gold bubbles, give an error saying connection lost and light up the play button. Reconnect and you can press play and get in. Depending on how you connect, that might not be any quicker (i.e. if you have to dial back in).

I've never done it to avoid a patch (and doubt it would work) but sometimes the my file scan seems to hang up and if I was playing an hour ago, I can do it in fairly safe assurance that the everquest.exe hasn't changed from 9pm to 10pm.

I've noticed that on my computers, it's my virus scan software that's going nuts during the file scan. I went into the options for my virus scanner and excluded the On Access Scanning of my Everquest directory and it's Sub directories and it speeds up the file scan by like 1000%.

Sadly the alt enter trick crashes AOL (say no more)

I have a 3 gig machine with a 512 stick in but sadly no ADSK in our area yet so still using the old can and string method - AKA 56k modem.

Cheers for advice

You can bypass the patch screen, and an endless thread sometime back over on The Newbie Zone concluded it wasn't against the EULA.

You need to run "eqgame.exe" with "patchme" after

Command line looks like this

"C:\Program Files\Sony\EverQuest\eqgame.exe" patchme

Easiest way, is to copy your current eq icon and create a second. Rightclick, select properties and ammend the command line (changing the directory if your is different of course).

I do let it scan at least once a day, but always use this if Ive crashed, or logged and want to get back a tad faster.

Edit: grr if i could spell i'd be dangerous

Thanks for the info

I tried it and got an error saying "string not found"

This mean I have done something wrong?

By the way, your machine is begging for another 512mb stick of ram. I can hear it all the way over here.

With hyperthreading 3.06 processor, Dual channel DDR ram, and a Sata raid array HD setup, I go from startup to login in under 60 seconds, with almost no zoning times. Keep in mind that your hard drive speed and ram are the biggest determining factors for how quickly you zone/load.

Agreed I definitely need another 512 stick. 400 DDR was 55 quid and I was tempted but ended up with a DVD writer instead so saving again.

I am running XP too egnaro but I will play about with the "" tomorrow as it is blatant I need my beauty sleep lol

G'night all
