Word of the Day for Thursday February 12, 2004

Quote:
latitudinarian \lat-uh-too-din-AIR-ee-un; -tyoo-\, adjective:

Having or expressing broad and tolerant views, especially in religious matters.

noun:
1. A person who is broad-minded and tolerant; one who displays freedom in thinking, especially in religious matters.
2. (Often capitalized) A member of the Church of England, in the time of Charles II, who adopted more liberal notions in respect to the authority, government, and doctrines of the church than generally prevailed.

More was nothing like his supposed example, the gently latitudinarian Cicero, for instance: Cicero's philosophical and religious dialogues (as opposed to his legal and political speeches, of course) often read as if he delighted in being contradicted, while More's are spittingly conclusive.
--Caleb Crain, American Sympathy

. . . the optimism preached in England by latitudinarians trying to soften the Puritan concepts of an inscrutable, cruel God and an abject, fallen humanity.
--James Wood, The Broken Estate

Latitudinarian comes from Latin latitudo, latitudin-, "latitude" (from latus, "broad, wide") + the suffix -arian.

Whew, that's a mouthful!

The point of having a word of the day is to learn a new word.

*** hat may be a great term (I'm still trying to figure out what it means), but it's not exactly new. Smiley: tongue

You want *** Hat to be the phrase of the day? I'm all for it, but you have to give me a definition so I can incorporate it into my every day conversations.

Does anyone know if Cicero, Illinois was named after this individual? If it was...man talk about the irony!

Yes it was.
Who is this More being talked about? Should it not be Moore as in Sir Thomas Moore? Or do I have the spelling wrong instead.

I have to admit, I don't know the person to whom they are referring.

The entire entry was a direct copy and paste, so unless Webster's misspelled the name, it's More, not Moore.

Also, in regards to *** Hat, Xythex; from your examples, I am restricted to using the term only to posters on these forums? I was really hoping to be able to toss it into conversations whenever the mood struck.

Dang.
