Cast SoW on yourself. The cast snare on your target. When it approaches you, cast fear on it and it will turn and try to get away from you. While it is fleeing (slowly because of snare) you beat the hell out of it.

Watch for the fear spell to break, because it is of fairly short duration. Re-cast fear and beat the mob again til dead or fear is again needed.

Level 22 spell panic animal. Ranger fear kiting is limited to animals, so it isn't as versatile as a shadow knight's. Panic Animal is only 10 mana however, compared to 40 for the standard Fear spell.

That's pretty much it - snare, fear, kill. Add in a DoT for flavor. What I like to do, is snare then kite around, adding DoTS and shooting my bow, to soften the mob up a bit before fearing.

Something else that helps is a Partisan of Stampede. It's a no drop sword that drops off a named poacher in Jagged Pine Forest that procs Terrorize animal. Upgrade to your fear spell. If you're prepared for the boredom of the camp, you can have a high lvl toon take out the poachers while your ranger sits there. About half the poachers are still LB to my 57 ranger, so some exp can be gained, albeit not much at that level. The named poachers can surprise you... one is a duel wielder that is VERY magic resistant. The poachers drop a lot of animal skins/pelts too, so you can collect for tailoring. They also drop some crap armor... prob want to sell it, or give to an alt if they don't have better. The poachers also drop heads. Collect for of the heads (there's five named, so make sure you get the right ones) and turn them into a NPC at the SFG zonein area, and you get a pretty nice ring... signet of the pine or something like that. One of the named also drop a no drop half elf mask, only usable by rogues and bards, so if you have an alt of those two, they can hang around for that. It's not usable till lvl 35 or 37 or something unfortunately. The griffons in JPF are great for fear-kiting also. If you're in wolf form, no other animals will bother you while you tear up some griffon. Grif meat sells for a decent price b/c it can be used to get baking high. If you're lucky a griffon eye might even drop. Sells for around 1k on my server atm. Good luck.

at 30 Fearkiting in Ice Clad is great, You can BIND on the Dock at Soulbinder & Buy and sell in the Gnome Village.

Buff up, SOW (Be sure to keep fresh SoW)...
Spot a Loan cougar (Easy to pull single if take time with out Harmony so as to save the mana)...
Snare the Cougar (If resists run ahead and recast snare)...
Once Snared run Lil ways ahead and cast PANIC ANIMAL (lvl 22 spell) if resist move back and recast, Once it turns to walk away run Up behind it and Beat it up good, occasionally stop and recast panic animal and keep killing ....
IF it breaks fear , "DO not melee it" Back away fast out of its reach to recast so it doesnt interupt your casts and hurt you bad.

Once you have Fearkiting down Move from IC to East Waste and Kill Mammoths, Cougars, Dire Wolves, Kodiaks, Rhinos, Wallruses, & Griffons... NOT ULTHORK there not animals !

Then when feel ready you can goto GD and Kill Kodiaks in cave near Velks Lab, close zone to run to if get trouble.

PS check IC, EW & GD quests, some nice gear... SPECIALLY the "Lost Map" Quest https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/quest.html?quest=932 for Eyepatch of Plunder https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/item.html?item=4431

The current state of pathing requires a less safe meathod of fear kiting. Currently if you are not meleeing there is a good chance the mob will pop across the zone. 3 months ago you could cast fear at a distance and thus not get hit.

Heck they may even get this fix in a couple more months or not.

id have tyo say First u snare it so it goes slow. then you root it so it stand still. keep doiing root/snare when they wear off and keep shooting your bow at it (may not be as good with some people but i allways do more bow damage than melee withy a ranger) plus.... its more fun to shoot a bow hehe. so snare/root/bow ... or you could also just go group, soloing isnt really fun and Everquest isnt a Solo game. If it was there would not be Group Windows so ... group group group
