Everquest still worth playing?Follow

#1 Feb 10 2004 at 1:07 AM Rating: Decent
Me and my girlfriend are looking for a MMORPG to play. I played everquest like or so years back. I played it up until the last first addon (where they changed the level cap from 50 to something) then quit. I was wondering if it's worth going back? Or should I just wait out for the next mmorpg (*crosses fingers for WoW beta*)? My main concern is leveling. I remember getting to 50 took a while, even with powerleveling, and now they have a 65 cap. I dont want to spend a year playing before we can actually have fun

Yes, the game is LOADS of fun. Even if you just now start out as level one. The bazaar makes it very easy, and I mean VERY easy to equip a lower level character so you can level relatively quickly, even without power leveling. I would advise that you spend some time in the bazaar researching items that you would like to buy, the BEST buys are the items that have HP and/or MANA on them and no level restriction. At about level 30ish, begin to replace it with gear that has stats that would enhance your particular classes abilities.
Dont't worry about picking a particular race / class combo for the best starting stats. With the equipment available now, you can make up for any shortcoming you might have. Pick the race / class combo you would most enjoy.

I would just like to echo the positives here.

I beta'd EQ and played the first few months and decided more or less right away that it wasn't for me.

I've just come back in the last week or so and I just have to say I love this game. It is loads of fun and is quickly heading up my list of all time top MMORPGs.

I would highly recommend giving it a try (oh ya, and my wife and I play together)

I have been playing for about 2 years now, and still enjoy the game a lot. I have a 2nd account for my daughter to play and bought evolutions for my nephew's birthday last year. Blast playing with 3 people on line at once. I have seen a number of couples playing together - at least 2 in my new guild. Buy Evolutions and sit back for the ride.

Added - LDON expansion opened up a whole new way to play and also allows for much faster leveling.

Well I've been playing for over a year and my toons are as profiled below, so I cannot attest to fast leveling. But I enjoy it for allot more than the grind to 65.

EQ is by far the best MMORPG out today. It has more diversity, better atmophere and wins in just about every catagory.

As to having to get to 65 to have fun I guess that depends on what you think is fun. I have great fun with my lower level characters. Leveling at lower levels is safer, happens faster, and is every bit as fun as at 65. The only thing you are really lacking at low levels today is raiding. Until level 50 you can't really participate in the raid game. The only other issue with the low levels is it is harder to get groups. The majority of players are 65 so there are less low levels to play with. That said I still don't find it too hard to get a group. With the advent of PoP it is easy to get around the world so when you find a group looking for more on the other side of everquests world you can still get there in a reasonable time.

However for 2 people who choose balanced characters and want to play together the journey to 50 should be trouble free.

I have a problem. My girlfriend cant play all that often and I can play alot. Would that cause a problem with leveling? I know it was a problem before.

It might cause a problem with having to catch her up every so often.

i quit eq last year after playing for 3. it was my first mmorpg and it gave me the WOW factor. im sure if you try this, you will get the same thing, although, it wont be as good as it used to be. with the neverending expansions from SOE, trying to keep the game alive and the horrible tech support the game has gone down in my book. the golden age of EQ is over. another thing is that the game is a constant exp grind. the quests are good, and crafting is ok, but 75% of your time will be exp grinding. not to mention that all the old areas are rarely used, and there is a number of 60+ that are snooty and think that they are better than everyone else. (there are nice ones too)also, having not up to par graphics. and not to mention the BS that SOE has on their website, "the #1 mmorpg in the world" wtf? 500,000 users, and lineage has over 2,000,000 in korea alone.

you can pick this, as every game has its flaws, but i feel that other games have better justice.

for instance, DAOC was a good game, it didnt keep me interested as long as eq, but it wasnt a constant exp grind. there was more nice people in the game than in eq, in fact i think i rarely ran into a bad person, but in eq i ran into several every day. alliance system gives a good community and bg's are fun. (IMO, end game rvr is lacking and relic raids are pointless)

ffxi(currently playing) is a good game for broad class choices, good melee system, great quests/missions. from what ive played, i would recommend this. the only things wrong is ui(setup so ps2 usable) and lack of char customization(armor kinda looks same, but it cuts down to almost 0 lag)

there are future games coming out that might interest you, including: World of Warcarft, Everquest 2, lineage 2(need a good comp for this one), dark n' light. a few more that i havent mentioned, but these are the biggies.

hope i have helped you in your decision.

I'm only level 56 and I think I'm better than everyone else. I'm not a bastage, just an early bloomer. Hehehe

Thevaik - I think you are missing out if you aren't playing EQ just because your girlfriend cant play as much. Heck just alternate playing her character to keep the levels close. Change of pace and gets you better feel for groups.

I think both DAOC & EQ are worth playing at this time. Very enjoyable and pretty different games.
