expect to not play from 3am PST on the 10th until late afternoon on the 11th.

EQTech

they are looking at a min. 9hr patch. this means 14-18hr patch, then expect login server to be down/flooded/not responding for hours, and game servers to crash left and right.

also be ready for emergency patching for next 1-2 weeks.

flame gun warming up now.

OMG, that's the only day of vacation I get for the entire year and I was going to spend it farming Deathfist belts! Sony owes me for the downtime! I want my fourty-four cents back! Class action lawsuit! I'm quitting my sixteen accounts and going to Worlds of ShadowHorizons XI!! And I'm taking my guild with me! That'll show those SOE fatcats!

Odd, the worse expansion to date takes the longest to patch. GoD=crap. What else is in this patch though?

SoL patch was worse. Actually, the patches from PoP on have been fairly smooth, all things considered. SoL patch just sucked *** from any perspective.

Oh my GoD, a nine hour patch.. Fortunately I have work in that time period, but I think I will stop by Allakhazam and see how miserable, tormented, and maddened people have become over the downtime :] Of course much of that time is going to be spent readying for Gates of Discord and upgrading the machines, but they have also stated that they will be doing a few other things which will include the new Tradeskill GUI - joy!

For those of you who are distressed with the upcoming patch, I leave you with this:

************
The Server's Down Again by: Richie Truxillo
------------------------------------
The Server's Down Again
it's time to go back to real life as know it
It's time to get some work done

So Husbands go back to your wives
And Kids go play outside
Because the servers are down again

*Background saying Goodbye in many ways*
Some of you have never seen the shine in 2 years, but that's okay
Use this opportunity to get out of the house
But you'll be coming back again

Verse 2
The Server's Down again
Your corpse has rotted and you're fumin'
Better go to the grocery store and stock up
So women, get back your guys
And, Goto McDonalds and get some fries
Cause the servers are down again

Bridge 2
------------
Some of you haven't gone to the bathroom
In two days but that's ok
Use this opportunity to bio break
And go use the potty
Verse 3
===========
The Server's down again
It might be an hour or ten
But I don't know
When they will be back up
So just go out and enjoy the life you've got
Don't just sit around and do jack squat

Because the servers are down again
*THE END*

The SoL patch included some major game engine work. So it was inevitable that things went wrong.

This patch supposedly does not have any game engine changes (other than the new class), so perhaps it will only be a few graphic and zoning type bugs that are yet to be found.

However the word is out that there will be a very major game engine overhaul in the next couple of months, so maybe the boys will try to sneek a few preliminaries in with this patch.

In which case anything is likely to happen.

As a matter of interest, I think it is quite significant that SOE have decided to introduce a new game engine for EQ.

Says pretty clearly that they expect the game to be around for a long time yet. It also says that they intend to compete with the "opposition" with EQ1, I wonder if this means "as well as" or, "instead of" EQ2?

Anyway, I am quite prepared to put up with a few days disruption, if the new game engine means a solution to the upgrading of the old world and dealing with issues like the removal of IGE type influences from the game.

Hmm, forgot about the trade skill window.

Expect major UI issues and the accompanying stream of anguished posters Smiley: smile

no this patch is supposed to also incorperate the new graphic engine and the DX9 upgrade. you can expect many hours of fubar from this.

if nothing else just form ppls hardware sucking and not working with the new standard. SoE says it is only about 1%, but from looking at the tech forum for last few years and other EQ related sites were ppl post their specs and want system help i can tell you it is going to be more then just 1% with hardware that will not be complient with DX9 and the new graphics.

also expect over the next month or so for things to smooth out, but do expect it to take at least 2 months if not a little longer before SoE finnaly cleans things up to run as semi intended.

What graphic engine?

The new graphic engine was introduced with SoL.

The move to dx9 is just a tweak. We have had 4 or 5 dx upgrades, other than people not reading the instructions, they do not cause much trouble.

The game engine I'm talking about is the basic game code, something that a couple of years ago the developers said they could not fiddle with, without really breaking the game.

It seems that while working on EQ2 a way to extract the old coding and replace it has been discovered.

PS... As far as dx9 is concerned, go down the road and buy any new game release and it is going to require dx9 to be installed. (Most of them will install it as part of the game install anyway). I guess there are still some people out there who are content to play Command & Conquer or Wolfenstien on their old Pentium 100 or whatever, so be it. But if you want to play the latest games you need current equipment.

Where did you ever hear that SOE would be patching Tunare 3.0, Singdall? I checked out the link you gave me and it said nothing about a new graphics engine going in tomorrow. I checked the Upcoming Updates page, and nowhere on it did it say Tunare 3 was going in tomorrow. I also checked the Engine Upgrade Notice page, it said that the engine was going to be patched in the next two months. That notice was posted on the Feb. 4 I believe. I don't think they would spring the engine on us so soon after the notice (they want players to update their cards if they need to before it goes live) and certainly with nearly no discussion or big announcement of it on their site. Please tell me where you got that info Singdall, I don't think it is credible.

Right here Iluien: Engine Upgrade Notice. This will be the second engine upgrade. It shall be called Tunare 3.0 and will end the vector animation era. Check out my post on So What Do We Know About the DirectX Changes? for details.

PsyoofXev, I think we at cross purposes here.

As I am sure you understand, the game package has two major elements, what we could call the game mechanics engine and the graphics engine.

The graphics engine sits on top the of the game mechanics, and basically "draws the pictures". The graphics engine is based on dx technology and the major re-write to bring it up to true 3D was introduced with Luclin.

The basic game engine, the coding that determines game play has never been altered in any major way, tables have been changed from time to time, but not much more, untill the introduction of instancing. This was a major change. (Which has been slipped in with minor disruption we all have to admit.)

My understanding of what is to happen in the next few months, is the introduction of a major re-write of the game machanics coding. I believe this is tied into the expansion of instancing and combat mechanics and a range of other stuff that has only been hinted at. But all designed to take EQ well into the future.

Aye, the major changes to the world in general are in the next few months. Tomorrow will probably mean a change to DX9, but only because Gates will require it and it's easier to get everyone on the page page.

The bit written about Tunare3.0 being part of the 2/10 patch wasn't by any SOE employee. It was just some guy speculating.

New graphics engine is not going live today. Also, every expansion release patch has been 10 hours, so this is actually one hour shorter =p

I take it this is only for people who purchased the upgrade? I haven't got any sign of an update yet. BUT I STILL CAN'T LOG ON!!!!!!!!!

This is for all players. SOE has to take down the whole system to do the upgrade. So regardless if you purchased the expansion, you will have to wait like everyone else.

My thanks goes out to both Iluien and Jophiel for correcting me on the new engine issue. The first place I saw any notice of a new engine of any sort was from that RPGExpert article and I assumed from there that the new engine would be graphical in type.

Thank you both for laying waste to my hopes and dreams of one time becoming able to run EQ semi-smoothly with my meager system of a Pentium 4 2.9ghz, 512 DDR, Radeon 9800 Pro, 2.5meg connection, and uber drivers. I am so depressed right now you cannot believe. |=(
