Considering Trying It Out...Follow

#1 Feb 05 2004 at 2:00 AM Rating: Decent
I was involved in the beta of EQ, I played a month or two after release and it just didn't click with me (translation - I was playing UO and was just having too much fun there).

I many moons later picked up EQ Gold and never played it.

So my question is.

From release to now.. what has been added, what can I expect in EQ if I start today? Think the game is great, I wanna hear it, think the game sucks, I wanna hear it.

I am considering just giving this a go while I wait for some next gen games to come out. And hey, half a million people play this game, I've been active in this industry a long time and I wanna see what its about.

So sell me EQ.

You want us to tell you all the changes from the time of initial release to now?

There have really been too many to post here. New spells, new abilities, new gear, new zones, new quests, new travel modes, new graphics, new levels.

Play, read through those help pop-up windows, read the forums.

Find out for yourself. We're busy playing (or ranting here on the boards.)

if you were in beta then you understand the basics of the game and are asking for a almost 5 year update on what has changed, added, removed, etc... thats a tall order.

basicaly the reason 400k+- ppl play EQ still is it is large. by that i mean it has more expansions, more places to go, more things to do then even a power gamer could see/do/play/quest/etc in 2 years worth. no way to master EVERY zone, mob, experiance, quest, etc for a single person in any normal amount of play time.

that is why it is still so popular. if you are bored with one area, go to an other, or an other, etc.

the trade skill system still sucks major butt. the quests are still only soso and most are not woth waisting the time camping X mob for 24hrs in hopes of seeing X mob to kill and have it NOT drop the quest item you need.

the expansions are many and each has brought new things to the game.

Kunark = new race, the Iksar. first race to have newbie armor quest that were/are worth doing. Epic weapons for all classes in this expansion IIRC and pushed the level limit to 60 from 50. upgrade in graphics

SoV (scars of velious(sp?)) = new set of zones 30+ ice world with lots of new dragons and giants to slay. nice expansion for the 30+ game crowd, upgrade in graphics.

SoL (shadows of luclin) = new race and class. race = Vah shir (kat ppl) class = beast lord. this is a cross between monk and shaman. very powerful pet class that solos well, and at high end is almost as nice to have around as a shammy for slows, heals, debuffs, etc, but with better DPS. major FUBAR of a graphics upgrade that over the last few years has been slowly tweeked to fix and runs semi smooth now on extreemly High end game systems.

Also added insta, well almost insta, ports to game. every 15min (when they work properly) you can port from NK, GF, GD, and one other zone to the 'Nexus' this is a central ground in the moon. the ports are free and for anyone with the SoL expansion.

the bazarr was also added in this expansion. took SoE 8 months after release to get it up, and they still have some major issues with #s of traders and crashing, but its a great feture, and the ONLY reason worth buying SoL IMHO. this alows players to set their toons up and go AFK and still sell their gear they want to sell. also means you can go and buy gear. ok search function with some nice modifing you can find exactly what you are looking for, find the lowest price, and then find the trader.

PoP (planes of power) = this is a 46+ expansion, but has some nice new spells, items, quests for 1-65, yup expanded the level limit with this expansion. a load of new Plan type zones that are for the 46+ crowd. there are also 55+ and 62+ zones and harder yet. Insta clicky ports to every city zone and a few other zones in the game. this expansion is a MUST have for getting around the HUGE world of Norrath and the moon.

LoY (legacy of yekesh(sp)) = new race the froggies (guktan IIRC) and the trolls have been kicked out of Grobb and now live in Neriak. pore Tier-dal having to deal with those smelly huge green things. new spells, and quests. also made the game montyhallish in the gem drop and ability to gain pp extreemly fast. this is a 1-65 expansion. shared Bank slot, and ingame Maps. the maps and bank slot alone make it worth buying.

LDoN (lost dungeons of norrath) = most receint expansion and IMHO the best thing to happen to EQ sense the end of Beta4. this is a 20+ expansion that alows for more insta porting (BB, EC, Nro, Sro, EF) and has instancing for adventures that are dungeon crawls without repop on mobs. you have a goal and 90min to complete X goal. nice loot, great xp, and fast killing. teaches some ok tactics, but will get a new player in trouble with a real dungeon as they might not know how to handle the repops and ADDs. a nice expansion to have post 20.

this is also a nice thing to have if you are high end without a chance at getting elemental level gear. the LDoN items are very close to that level of gear. that is top end Ubb3rn3ss gear fyi.

there that is roughly 5 years of EQ in a short post. enjoy.

In spite of the current furor rippling through the boards, it is still a great game.

More immersive, more to do and see, more fun than ever.

You get the best out the game as part of a group, so making an effort to get to know people and building a good reputation makes an enormous difference to your later options.

Some content simply cannot be accessed without a strong and competent group of players working together. As you might imagine this tends to be the best content as well.

The early levels are now many many times easier to get through compared to when you last looked at the game. So you can very quickly get to the 20's and 30's where the characters begin to develop their unique strengths, so it does not take long to get to the interesting stuff.

If I were you I would make sure to get the LDoN expansion as well as there are many high level players who also play LDoN with their low level alts. This is a good way to meet them and establish a repoir.

yes, that is very true, but there is also loads to see solo or in small groups.

all of the higher end content is group/guild/raid without a doubt.

a part time player (2-8hrs a week) can easily level, grow, and see tons of content and still have room to see and learn more.

both sides are valid, but dont get too hooked into either 1 completly. its nice to have the power to solo when you do not have time, or desire to group/raid.

thats why i play solo type classes so if i dont have time to group or just dont want to bother with it i can go solo and still very much enjoy the game that way just as much as i do grouped or when raiding.

What is a good n00bie friendly server? One where I could find a guild and find decent people to play with at the low levels.

Suggestions?

more and more guilds have min. levels to join.

sub 20s you will not have need of a guild really its just to easy to level the way EQ is today.

1-5(maybe6) stay in your newbie area..

5-10 Nro (north ro)

11-14 Oasis

15-24 PC (paludual cavers(sp??))

this can be done solo or grouped in less then 10hrs of game play without twinking.

thats how trivial the low end game has become.

the reason for my choice of low level old world zones is simple. with LDoN and all the other expansions those 2 zones are almost empty of low level toons, thus there are plenty of mobs to kill and level you fast. also there is a constant # of higher level toons to help you if you are nice and DO NOT BEG.

once you get past PC you should of had time to build a rep, and shortly after will start getting guild invites.

sugestion on guild invites. not only should a good guild interview you, but you should interview that guild. if it is a guild of ppl that you do not like, or do not like the way they play the game, no matter how good that guild is, its not for you.

If someone who starts is REALLY a quest addict I'd advise him to give Qeynos a try. More quests than any other city and the items you can get by quest there are very decent up to level 20.

It's not the most popular zone of course because without PoP theres no way to travel easily - just check Qeynos and some othere starting cities out at EQAtlas

To learn about the variety of quests you could also have a look here at allkhazam: Quest List but beware - spoilers!

To be honest servers are much of a muchness these days as most are Old with a large high end population and lots of lower level twinks so pick one and run with it.

The main thing is to be yourself and make friends because as much as Singdall is right about the size of eq being why it is so popular, the people you meet along the way are also very important.

I would avoid PvP and FV since they are specialist servers that you should move to having seen a 'Blue' server in action. I also have reservations about Stromm since people seem to be more Abrasive when answering questions than on other server at least thats what i found.

If you decide on Druzzil Ro send me a tell and i can point you at the good guilds and away from the bad ones when you are thinking of joining one.

hard to beat that point as well, but i would argue that all MMORPG would be like this. if you play long enough you will build some good online friendships.

i still keep in contact with several friends from bnet. started bnet when Diablo came out, and left when EQ hit beta4. have not returned much, but still keep in contact with some friends i made on bnet.

im sure it will be same with EQ when i eventualy leave EQ for something bigger and better down the line.
