East/West US Servers?Follow

#1 Feb 04 2004 at 12:24 AM Rating: Decent
Does anyone know where I can find a list of server locations?

Specifically, I'm looking for a west coast server to play on. I am currently living on the west coast, and playing on an east coast server, I suspect.

I would like to reduce the ping I am getting ATM. =)

Hmmm... I haven't been keeping up on Sony news, so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought that all the US servers were hosted on the west coast. I know they used to all be located here in San Diego. I'm just not sure if that's still the case.

In any case, the backbone connections that EQ uses are sufficient that you should not be getting significant ping times as long as you are playing on a US server, no matter where you are in the US.

There are a couple servers that are in Europe though (Kane Bayle and one other I thought? Don't remember). Make sure you aren't using one of those (maybe if you told us what server you were playing on?).

As long as you're not on a Euro server, your high ping times are most likely caused by your own ISP or something with your own home network. What exactly are the ping times you're getting? Is this "normal", or do you not know for sure (ie: you just started playing and the game seems slow).

If you're just seeing lag and assuming that's high ping time, that may not be the case. There are many things that can cause game lag that are not network dependant. How much memory do you have in your system? You really need 256MB as an absoute minimum, and should really have 512MB if you want to play without noticable slowness. What sort of video card are you running and how much memory does it have? If you're playing on an older card, you'll experience video lag.

You might also want to post this on the Tech Support forum instead of here. I've never heard of anyone ever thinking of EQ servers by where they are geographically before. It's just not an issue. Therefore, I don't think it's your server (again, unless you're on a Euro server). It's most likely a technical problem that can be solved by looking at your setup.

I played SW:G for a while, and they had east coast and west coast servers, and there was a noticable increase in ping time when playing on one or the other (depending on your location).

SOE handles that game as well, so I was assuming the same would be true with EQ. Perhaps I am wrong.

I really dont think I should have a ping of 500+ when I have a cable modem that gives me a consistent 100 MB/s, so I was assuming I was playing on an east coast server. I have GE Force 4 128 and I have 1 M of RAM, so I don't think it's my system causing my lag/low frame-rate/toon pop problems.

Perhaps it is my ISP. I have Comcast, and yes, they do suck.
