Nah, hold off on LDoN until you're sure you enjoy the game.

You know what's your best chance for having fun? Seriously, getting to meet some cool people and making friends with them. I know, that sounds trite, but you'd be suprised how many people just float in and out of pick-up groups and never really hook up with anyone. But when you have an itch to go to some rarely used dungeon instead of standing around the common grind spots, being able to say to your buddies "Hey, I've never been to Splitpaw Lair" is a nice thing.

That said, LDoN is a cool expansion and I enjoy it but there's no reason to immediately buy into it. As for the next expansion, Gates of Discord, you can put that on the back burner; it's exclusively for the high level set except for the new class and you already have some fifteen classes to try as it is.

Fun is entirely a matter of opinion. I think it's fun. You might hate it. It's also a matter of doing in the game what you think is fun. If you like levelling quickly, you can. If you like exploring out of the way places, you can. If you like exploring out of the way places but you only ever go to grind zones, you might think "This game sucks, all we do is sit here and grind xp." Some people think most of the fun comes from raiding and amassing a bunch of people in a coordinated effort to take down a dragon, lich-king or god. Others sit there and say "This sucks, it takes an hour to get everyone's crap together to kill this dragon for three pieces of loot that I probably won't see. I wish I was with my three friends exploring a dungeon." It's all in finding what you're looking for.

The first ten levels are deceptively fast to level since you get an extra experience bonus, don't have to corpse run, etc. After that, for speed you have to find the right zones and be content with fast, safe kills in the same place over and over. You usually don't get the best loot or get to use a lot of your skills in those locations, so you have to consider that. In my own style of play, it's a lot of exploring or going to places for loot for a bit, then taking time out to do some boring xp grind to level, then using my new levels and skills to find new places to slowly explore and get loot from. So I'm still a few levels shy of the lvl 65 cap, but I've had fun getting there.

Adding something about your starting city I would advise you to try Qeynos at the western coast of Antonica . It's not that popular because there's no wayfarers camp near and the trip to the Bazaar is a longer than usual without Planes of Power.

But it has probably the best fun-value. It is the only starting city with a HUGE D&D Style dungeon connected directly to the city which you could adventure in up to lvl 25 easily, the Qeynos Catacombs. Full off undead and evil races, even underwater passages are included - the pure fantasy chliche =)

Qeynos got also by far the most low-lvl quest that yield decent magic items and can challenge your character beginning from lvl 1. :))

You can check up every other city or zone at the same teriffic site: eqatlas and if Qeynos doesn't make you drool there's probably some place else which makes you want to be there immediately. ;)

And if you want to have a look at some quests (spoilers - be warned!) allakhazam offers great help: Quest List

If you go into the catacombs of qeynos make sure you have printed out the map to the zone from eqatlas.com. I lost a corpse there at 8th level back before they put you back to you bind spot with all your gear. There are some nice areas to use down there, but if you make the wrong turn you will die quickly.

That said, choose what char you want, they all have advantages and disadvantages. Dont hesitate to ask questions here and in game.
Most importantly dont beg for items, just for information.
The game is called everquest not everbeg.

...if you hail someone with a blunt weapon or a robe and just ask for the way to the newbie zone you will probably be buffed from head to toe anyhow ;-)

Obviously this is good if you like solo exploring.

If you want to have lots of people around you from the start then picking Kelethin (Wood Elf/Half-Elf) or Felwithe (High Elf/Half Elf) as a starting city gets you probably the most common starting zone - Greater Faydark. This does mean there are a lot of nitwits around but it also makes the chance of finding a group vastly higher. I would recommend it as a good place for a first character. You might really want to be an evil Erudite Necromancer but finding your home city totally empty 90% of the time could give you a wrong impression. Play something more mainstream for a little while until you understand the mechanics and then you can start your "real" character in a more informed way.

Server populations vary so zones deserted on one may be more populous on others.

Not having LDoN will not be any kind of issue until you are level 20 since that is the minimum level for access to the dungeons. By then you will know whether you like the game or not. If you do then I recommend getting LDoN since a lot of people seem to do nothing but adventures nowadays leaving some of the traditional 25+ zones a bit empty.

From the standpoint of convenience Greater Faydark is of course the best starting point because a Nexus portal to the Bazaar is inside the Zone and with Butcherblock Mountains to the west is one of Norraths most popular low-lvl hunting grounds.

Speaking of cities - Kelethin is sometimes a bit hard not to get lost till you've gotten used to it while Felwhite is the easiest city available. Only 2 maps, no underground and layout so simple it allows you to visit every single Vendor and be finished with it in less than 15 min.

Furthermore some of the most popular classes have guilds in Felwhite: Cleric, Paladin and Enchanter with all of their resources easily available.

On Firiona Vie there are 40-50 chars in Greater Faydark at prime time. So if you're a very "social" player then Cobra is right and its definitely the place to start
