Lucy has another, and more Serious, bug.Follow

#1 Jan 31 2004 at 4:31 AM Rating: Default
Ran into the bug when I came across:
Fading Shadow Long Sword
This bug is more serious than the last one I posted about Lucy showing Negative Damage Bonus.

Lucy could not find that exact text. So, thinking you may have mispelled yet another item someplace I did a check for "Fading Shadow" and it was not listed. I then tried "Shadow Long" and it came up. This puzzeled me. So I opened the source and to my not-so suprize; the source read "Fading Shadow Long Sword". Note the double space.

Yes, Lucy has many items that have double spaces in them. These items will not come up properly in some cases like they should. I am going to so a search now, be it take some time on my end for as many as I can find to try and help you by listing what to correct. Have to search by "a ", "b ", "c " etc. Will present a list soon.

*sigh*

Lucy has mixed entries that use an apostrophe. Some entries are with the mark ` and some with '. Even type of weapon which should all use the same mark, such as Shan'Tok you will find that when you do searches that items will come up under Shan'Tok and under Shan`Tok. Neither will come up together. This is a problem to be corrected.

I recommend that Lucy either use a universal symbol for an apostrophe either ` or '; or that it find both entries when you use one or the other. Thus if you look for Shan'Tok or Shan`Tok all matches show up.

I really hope you have seen my posts sooner or later. That you take them seriously. I look forward to seeing improvements all around Allah. Keep up the good work!

(Yes, as I continue to go thru the weapons for my spreadsheet, I will continue to list items Lucy is missing, spelling erros, or anything else I may find. This is for the betterment of your site and for everyone. Thank you.)

Lucy's item database is constructed directly from items as they appear in game. "Fading Shadow Long Sword" (with the double space) is the correct spell of the item's name. The same is the case with apostrophes, the items themselves are not consistent in-game. That said, it may be possible to normalize spaces and punctuation for searches, but thats really dependant on how much overhead it would add. I'll see about looking into it when I can.

Just looked and saw your other posts, Lucy is entirely dependant on user submissions via the itemcollector. So, for instance, the case you pointed out of Forged Firebrand Pick missing froglok from the races list is simply due to no one having seen this item with the collector running for the past year.

I see the error with negative calculated damage bonus at low levels, I'll correct that momentarily. As for listing all items by type (such as 1h slash), you can do that with the advanced search (Type: 1h slashing, Damage >= 1 seems to be a good filter for that).

I don't check this board often, so if you can, please try to post any other bugs you see in the forum feedback forum, as I check that one more often.

With the missing items from Lucy. Generating a list of what is missing is for anyone out there that wish to help or contribute to Lucy. Didn't except you alone or to do so or myself.

So anyone reading this that wants to help Lucy out: Please take a look at the missing list currently in the other thread. It needs revised because some ' items are there, just mixed between ` and '. A complete list of 1HS, 1HB, Pierce, and maybe other categories should get completed today. If nothing else, think of it as a great way to get your name on it.

Anyways, I have a cool spreadsheet to complete! :o)

BTW: I don't have advanced search features on Lucy; as I don't have a premium membership to Allah nor will I. My opinion is that he should remove the player threads that are tacked onto every item to seriously reduce his cost. I find that part worthless and waste of bandwith to which I will not pay for. I believe in a site that is mostly all text so you cut straight to what you want and no garbage.

OK, so you're complaining about a service you're not paying for?

Ummm...although you may have pointed out some valid bugs, and yeah, there's a lot of garbage in the comments, but I think that perhaps you should go finish your own site before criticizing this one.

Actually I like the threads attached to the items, quests, and spells. Often times very important bits of information are missing in the official writeup and after wading through the garbage (10-90%) on some threads I am able to find the location or name of that elusive vendor,NPC, or subquest I vitally need.

It also allows players to quickly update, or post notes on an item or thread without flooding alla with tons of feedback emails. Plus they are at the bottom so if you don't need to read them then you don't have to.

With the serious lack of information in game for most quests, its imperative that the community have a site where they can share their cummulative collected knowledge. It would really suck to spend 3 weeks on a complex quest only to find out the reward is a no-drop item thats not even for your class

Those threads are invaluable, and have helped me, nay saved my sanity even, many a time with locations, spawntimes et all.

Also they are surprisingly up to date in many cases. Which just goes to show that peoples are reading and using them!

Khelios:
I do not have a site. The page is just there so people who do not understand how Geocities works can get the zip file. You cannot directly link to pictures or files on Geocities, without the typical Geocities error comming up. Some people do know to just retry with a space at the end of the address, most probably do not. Thus, that is just a filler page. There is no site, just free storage space for me.

Yes, I can complain about a site and all it's mess when it is supposed to be something more offical. Something people are supposed to rely on is supposed to have more accuracy than this is. I can complain because I seen sites for lesser games with way few people, like Asheron's Call, cleaner, neater, and more accurate than this. I can complain because he/she/they get paid regardless if I pay. If they did not show ads at all, and was a totaly non-profit, then you would have a case. Like I said, take out all the damn threads on all the damn items and I am certain it would have a lot less bandwith; enough as he would not have to charge a premium service. 1000's of items, opening many times daily, to which the threads open, regardless if you read them or not. It's that simple.

"Quality, expect no less."

I would be less inclined to pay for this service without the player commentaries on it. They've proved too useful in providing additional information that there often isn't room for in the official write up.

Personal view. /shrug

agree that the comments are invaluable - I would never spend 1k of plat in the Bazaar without checking here
-how this spell really works
-when this weapon starts to proc
-and ALSO what's the grapic of the piece (yes, there are a LOT ofcomments about that)

a simple description could not outvalue the comments of people who actually use(d) the stuff.

OMG, I'm agreeing with Leiany... Seems like a pretty weak rationalization for paying less than $5 a month, Tinc. I'm not currently a premium member, kinda off and on, but I certainly feel that the info in the item threads is often found nowhere else and is very worthwhile to keep.

Your comment about knowing of other sites for lesser games with fewer people, cleaner, neater, etc., is actually a reason for Allakhazam to charge a premium: the bigger the site is and the more visitors, the more effort and cost to do the upkeep. Banner ads generate next to nothing anymore. And since the item names are exactly as they appear in game, you are criticizing the wrong people. If you won't pay Alla a fee because he has incorrect item names in his database, then by extension you should cancel your EQ account, since they also have incorrect names in THEIR database

Well Tinc, I guess you can complain. And Ralea was nice enough to respond. It's your opinion, and you found some bugs - good for you. As long as you don't whine.

After thinking about it, I have to agree with Leiany and co. The threads do provide good info.

Tincmetal. Go to an item, go to forum preferences and change it to no comments and save it so it's permanant for you. Tada.
