Ok, I make everything up to beer-braised stuff but somhow it never seem to get the stat adders.

I eat bear stakes but get no +STR
I eat deadly meadly but my save VS poison doesn't rise
I eat beer braised gator.....etc.

What am I doing wrong?

First off, you shouldn't eat it (right click I assume).
To get the stat effect the food or drink must be the first one it will next consume in your inventory. Your inventory is determined by main slots first if any are directly there (see chart). If not, then it goes by the bag, and inside the bag order (see chart).

Main Inventory:
1 5
2 6
3 7
4 8

Bag Inventory:
1 2
3 4
5 6
7 8

You can have one Food and one Drink stat by having each one first. The stat will last till next time you are hungry, then it will eat it. There is way to avoid that.

Food and Drink have different length of time. The base time is 72min (1 Game day) for a "Meal" or a "Drink" on a Human with no AA ability. Other decriptions last longer "Hearty Meal" or shorter "Snack". The zone you are in effects how long it lasts. Such as Ro Deserts or Ocean of Tears consumes faster. Also your race, large races comsume faster, small races slower. Then you have AA ability. I've seen no site with concrete measurements on these things. Sadly, you are at a loss there.

The best advice to save your stat food is to buy "Meal" and "Drink" items and right click to force feed and drink about every 30min. This is the worst (fastest) I've ever seen my food consumed at and I usualy use Bread and Water.

Hope this helps you enjoy that Hero Sandwich and Qeynos Tea or whatever as long as you like.

PS: I haven't bothered to have stat food in awhile. Best advise is to he a RL buzzing timer of some sort, like an Egg Timer you can quickly set.

Thank you very much - now it's much clearer to me!

Since I have to consume it the "natural" way - does that mean I can only have one stat adding food effecting me at the same time?

You have to have it set up to be next consumed naturally, but you don't actually have to consume it that way (goes poof) as I explained. You are correct, you can only have one effecting you at a time; one Food and one Drink. Note I gave an example with Hero Sandwich and Qeynos Tea. Enjoy!

I am sure that you have seen people force feeding themselves (several eat and drink messages in a row). They probably have stat food/drink in their top food/drink slot, but to prevent eating/drinking it they fill themselves on cheap (non-stat) food. That way you can make a single piece of stat food/drink last forever, or until you forget to forcefeed yourself and consume a very pricy item...

well....as long as I have to skill up and never know if I'm better of with +2 STR, +2 SV on poison or whatever...

....i will just fill my top backpack with 9 different food and 20 water (havent started brewing yet) to feast on it over time ;)

As the world's laziest player I just make 4 stacks of MTPs, 4 stacks of QAT's, and then don't worry about it for a month. Both are max duration stat enhancing items (although I think the picnics last longer than the tea).

thats right, chars seem to drink a stack faster than they eat a stack but with the prices I can't really afford to buy MTP and QAT in stacks - just bought 2 each to slot them up before I go crushing some bones again in crushbone.

What I do with my necro is I buy a couple of stacks of batwings from the DE spell component vendor in PoK behind the library (next to the fishing supplies) and a couple of stacks of fresh fish from the fishing supplies barbarian. Combine 1 each to make a fish roll and use those to force feed yourself. Cheap. And you can wait a long time b/w forcefeeds since the fishrolls are banquet (I believe, haven't looked in a long time). Plus, they weigh practically nothing and triv at 130 something. Also keep in mind that if you are on a mount (horse or drogmor) a lot, you will consume food and water at a quicker rate. I haven't seen any solid evidence of how much quicker, but anyone that has a mount will agree. For drinks I'll use fuzzlecutters from the gnome merchant in front of Freeport. That all being said, I don't bother with stat food that often anymore, as I always get more into the raid/hunt then the food and forget to feed myself anyway...
