A few quick newb questions...Follow

#1 Jan 29 2004 at 10:06 AM Rating: Decent
As I sit here, watching my health bar trickle back to 100%...

(I'm a transplant from EQOA, by the way, so I'm not a complete newb. I'm just trying to adjust to the intricacies(sp?) of the pc version.)

1) Does better food/water help me regen health faster?

2) Whats up with the damage numbers on weapons? I was given a dmg4 weapon when I started. I later bought a dmg5 weapon of the same type (1H slashing...I'm a pally) only to find out that it didn't affect my attack score at all. And why when I unequip a dmg4 weapon, my attack drops by a whole lot more?

3) Skill points. I've been putting all mine so far into 1H slash, but I dropped 1 into bind wound and taunt. My taunt has been increasing by itself, as I taunt the hell out of every mob I fight. Will bind wound do the same if I use it? Should I even bother, or is it a uesless skill for my class? (Like the sneak and hide buttons they start you out with.)

Thanks in advance. =)

Bindwound will go up as you use it. As a paladin its not as great a skill as for the pure melee like warriors but its a good skill to work on incase your oom soloing or need to heal war while oom. Might want to not spend your points on weapon skills like 1hs, 2hs, 2hb, 1hb and pierce. They go up fine while using the weapons. But try to keep 1hs, 2hs, 1hb, 2hb and piercing up near max each level. Theres some great weapons of each type as you progress and at end game.
The numbers are the damage\delay ratio. Wont really notice changes till higher up. But higher damage put simply means higher amount of damage you might do. Higher delay (the second number) means the longer it takes to swing the weapon.
Food and water dont inscrease regen but not having them on you at all will stop you from regening mana, not sure on health. So its good to have some food and drink on ya. Either rations or bread or something and some water flasks or milk.

Can hand out much more in depth advice if you provide your class and level.

Your attack score is primarily based off of your Offense Skill and Weapon Skill with whatever you're holding. So if you're holding a rusty shortsword and switch to a Blackened Alloy Longsword, you won't see a change to your ATK since both use One Handed Slashing as a weapon skill (despite the BA Longsword having more damage and shorter delay). If you switch to a dagger, you'll see your ATK go up or down depending on if you have more skill in Piercing or in 1HS. If you just bag your weapons, you'll usually see your score drop a lot since you're using Hand to Hand and few people beyond monks and beastlords train H2H.

There's some other stuff which affects ATK, the most noticable being strength. From what I understand, STR doesn't have quite the effect on ATK it appears to, for reasons I don't fully understand, but if you drop your rusty shortsword and pick up a sword with +5 STR, you'll see your aTK go up despite them both being 1HS skill.

I'm a level 5 Halfling Paladin.

So if I don't put points into slashing/piercing/etc. what do I put my points into? Most of the skills aren't open yet, and I don't plan on crafting anything for some time.

Edit: Oh yeah, and I've seen increases in offense, defense, taunt, etc. happen on their own, but I've yet to see my 1h slash go up. Does that info appear?

Save them up.

They are useful if you need to kick-start a skill you have neglected and for tradeskills where you can put 20 in to get you through the early stuff.

You will not take long enough per level to max any skill but your main one until you are in your teens. Don't worry too much as they can all be caught up later.

Thanks for the replies. =)

Like I said, I come from EQOA. We get points for our base stats as we level, and all abilities are learned through scrolls and treated like spells. This is a bit more complex.

Speaking of which, how do you raise base stats in this game?

You either use the bonus stat points you get (20-30 depending on the race/class combo you choose), or you obtain items that have stat modifications.

1) Better food and drink will not help you regen faster. More expensive (vendor bought) food will last longer. You'll eat a stack of muffins (it's labelled as a "snack") much faster than something that's labelled "this is a banquet size meal!".

2) The first number on a weapon indicates the level of damage one hit can do, the second number is the delay (speed) of the weapon. I'm a caster, so I won't even try to go deeper into that topic. You saw your attack drop dramatically when you took your weapon out of your had because that shows your hand to hand attack rating. Being a pally I assume your skill in hand to hand is next to zero.

3) In the first few levels, it pays to spend your training points in your primary attack skill. At some point soon you shouldn't need to. You should find yourself maxing your skills each level just by fighting. New skills will be available to you at specific levels. You must spend at least one training point in the new skill for it to go up. You can see what skills come at what levels by opening the training window with your guildmaster. This is when those training points you save up come in very handy.

Bind wound is a handy skill for everyone to have. I've kept people from death's door by slapping bandage after bandage on them (while they were telling me "I'm gonna die from this poison".) In no way does it replace a healer, but there are times when it's all you've got. The higher your skill, the more points of damage you'll heal per bandage. Your friendly neighborhood magician can summon bandages for you. I know bandages can be cost prohibative at low levels.

Also there is a damage cap in affect till you reach lvl 20. And for raising your weapon skills; useing a fast delay weapon will raise them faster. Basically every time you swing and hit(or maybe swing and miss i do not remember) a mob there is a chance of raiseing your weapon skill. oh and you can only raise your skills on non green conning mobs.
