Most of the warnings you've heard are exaggerated truths. I think what really set most people on an EverCrack rampage was the story of a 20ish college kid with a mental handicap and history of emotional problems commiting suicide. When the story was put together it all centered on the fact that he had played EverQuest for a few years, and effectively ignored most of the other problems he had had for God knows how long.

I'm not denying that EverQuest is an addictive game once one gets into it, and I have known people who have let it get in the way of other aspects of their life(i.e. work, schooling, other responsibilities). The simple fact is that it isn't necessarily EQ's unique power of addiction keeping people on it. If you do a little research you'll find that most popular online games have an addictive nature to some extent. EverQuest's has just been more publicisized.

If you're considering starting off in EQ, you can avoid letting it consume you by just exercising a little responsibility. Hell, the game has its own timer/alarm to let you know when a certain amount of time has passed, letting you set yourself a limit to play.

Lots of things are addictive, especially to those with addictive personalities. Normal video games, not just online ones, are addictive to many people. Chatting in IM is addictive to some people. EQ combines both and so could be considered doubly addictive. But Atiba hit the nail on the head: those that have real troubles with EQ addiction probably had problems before starting EQ, and EQ pretty much just acts as a catalyst. If they didn't have EQ, they'd probably be addicted to something else.

Those are my thoughts. I don't know what kind of suggestions I could give though.

Game on,

As an old time Dungeons & Dragons player...we've heard all of this nonsense back in the 1980s. People used to say that D&D either made you a devil worshiper or drove people to suicide. The movie Mazes and Monsters didn't help this stigma at all either.

Many many years (back in my college days) we used to play D&D every Saturday night with our dungeon master, who happened to be the college's doctor of ethics, philosophy, and religion. I played the game through all 4 years of college and these were some of the best (and happiest) times of my life. Anything you like doing has a degree of so called addiction to it. Some of the friendships I established during my college years have now lasted over two decades. If this is addiction....well I love it!

Of course does EQ have the potential to make you somehow depend upon it.

The special thing about online gaming is the mix of a somehow addictive gameplay (just the next level/just one more camp/just to finish the quest etc.) and a strong social aspect. Rearding that a LOT of people spend hours per day in chatrooms or message boards (*grin*) how nice is it then to chat and play at the same time? ;-)

From my personal point of view I am somehow addicted but the effect lessens with every week I play (10 weeks now) - new things can be very consuming.

The only important thing is that you are honest with yourself and others. If I started telling my hubby I just chatted or wrote mails instead of playing EQ then would be definitely something wrong.

Im glad you brought that up. To me, AD&D was far more addictive than EQ, but neither are evil. A game is what you bring to it. Period.

Now, that said, both games are simply a way to pass time, while being in the company of people you enjoy. Yes, you CAN play solo, but the game was designed for group play.

Addictive? Sure. Dangerously addictive? No. 'Nuff said. Smiley: smile

EQ does cause a certain amount of relationship issues. Whether any other players have experienced yet or not. The problem with EQ is that it is enjoyable to play for 10 hours a day. It is enjoyable to play 5 days a week. This takes its toll on a social relationship.

At some point you may find your friendships diminishing, your relationships stagnating, and your belly growing. If your 15 years old, this wont make sense. Only when you are mature enough will you understand what this game will take from you. You probably wont realize it until it hits you square in the face.

Just words of warning from a late 20's EQ addict.
