Spider silk has many good places (East Commons, Butcher Block, Misty Thicket, Oasis of Marr, N Desert of Ro, etc..). Both large and giant spiders drop the silk, hence there appears to be more mobs that drop them.

Spiderling silk is a little tougher to get. Although there are plenty of spiderlings in EC I've found these to be heavily camped. The newbie area in the N Desert of Ro seems to be pretty good (both in the green area by the Inn and the early sand portions). Both desert spiderlings and dune spiderlings drop the silk. If you're very low level be careful of the dune spiderlings, for they have a poison bite.

The Feerott used to be a great place for spiderling silks but now lots of yellow and black(?) spiderling silks drop instead thus limiting the take. As far as I know it is not really any worse than the other places mentioned. I have used the Innothule Swamp next door instead. The area near Gukta is pretty good - kill everything and spiderlings will spawn. Tracking helps there because visibility is poor. You may be able to find some silks on vendors in either zone, especially on weekends and/or on younger servers.

For spider silks, the difinitive place was East Karana. A lucky kill of a crag spider could yield eight spider silks. Further, loads of lions around for pelts. There is a hill in the south-central part of the zone. Sit on top and kill everything (apparently snakes are placeholders) and you will have silk/pelt happiness.

However, you milage may vary. I haven't done this for about a year now - things may have changed.

Have to ask this. I do not think it's true, but would like to know for sure. In newb zones, do spiderlings spawn better when there are low level characters around, rather than just a higher level farming. I read somewhere to start a new character to farm, but it just sounds way weird to me.

Never heard this one but my guess is that a noob would be killing snakes and stuff which will help spawn the spiders.

(and feerott still rocks for spiderling silks)

Thank you, Braindead. I should have thought of that. Makes sense.

I usually harvest spider silks in east karanas. Usually there might be one or two ppl doing the same. But if noone is around i can ussually get 80 silks in about 2 hours. No kidding, just go to the south eastern part of the maps, there you will find mountain range slowly going up,..
mobs :
Large widow spiders: 2 - 8 silks
Carrion Crawlers : 2-5 silks

There is also some hilll giants and cyclops but very easy to dodge if u don't want to fight.

Yup, EK is the place to go for spider silk. One of the bonuses is that the spiders also drop halfling parts which you can bake into yummy "hot n' spicy toelings". My husband's toon fed on those toelings for a long long time.

I always found the newbie area of Halas to be a bonanza for spiderling silks. Those wooly spiderlings are pretty plentiful. The poster who said the newbie garden in N Ro is also a good place is correct. If I remember correctly, some of the dune spiderlings sometimes drop 3-4 silks.

Depending on what you're making, you may also want to check out the recipes that use shadeling and shade silk. Both are very plentiful in Shadeweaver's thicket. A shade silk thread and LQ rockhopper hide makes leather padding, just as a silk thread and LQ bear, wolf or cat hide/skin. Just remember that you generally can't combine a Luclin silk with a Norrathian hide.

Check eqtraders.com for great tradeskill information.

I have found the best place for spiderling silks to be innothule swamp and the crab spiderlings.
Another advantage for hunting everfrost is killinp polar bear cubs for quality furs. You dont get many but bear meat can sell as well to bakers.

A couple months ago Verant made a change to the spawn rate in the newbie zones (I can't remember what patch it was). The increase in spawn rates was intended to reduce the number of arguements. Since the West Gate in Freeport now has a very nice spawn rate, but sorry no spiderlings. The spawn rate in Desert of Ro increased but not as much as West Gate.
