2 DVD's or 8-10 CD'sFollow

#1 Jan 22 2004 at 5:53 AM Rating: Decent
The recent poll on EQ asks whether I'd rather get the game on 2 dvd's or 8 to 10 cd's. What about the third option, 4510 floppies...

Insert disk 2197 into drive A: and press enter.

Better yet 2 floppies and you can download the rest. Dialup users would only need a month or two!

I chose 2 DVDs. Odds are if you have a computer that is able to run EQ2 you will have a DVD drive, or have the $25 to go pick one up off of the internet or on sale. Distributing it via 10 CDs would raise the production costs astronomically, which you can be assured would be passed on to the consumer. Plus the sheer volume of exchanged games due to a single bad CD would be huge.

I chose DVDs though I'm holding out for the limited gold edition on 1,755,298,914 punch cards.

My thought was - this is the dumbest poll that they have ever come up with - answered it to get rid of it - then thought, They're probably using this to gather info - grrrrrrrrrrr.

Should have said "other" info - as opposed to the answer to the poll. You know - the kind of stuff they can use to send you other stuff. Of course, I would think that Sony has allready milked our accounts for all that stuff anyway . duhhhh

Are they talking about a regular DVD Drive or a DVD-ROM drive - I was under the impression that there was a difference between the two?

Thanks.

I think your thinking of the difference between a DVD-ROM and DVD-RAM drive. DVD-ROM drive is the standard drive. DVD-RAM is all but dead. Im sure they would distribute it on normal everyday DVDs, which will play in most every DVD Drive you could buy today.

I've personally never understood why they insist that you buy distribution media to get an account anyway. (LoY and LDoN downloads notwithstanding.)

I mean, if my friend/roommate/significant other/total stranger/whatever has a set of the CDs, why should I have to go and buy a set, too? I think they should sell accounts online. That way I can just borrow someone else's CDs and install it, then buy the account key from the website and I'm good to go. Or if I already have the software and want a second account to 2-box, as many people do, why should I have to get another set of media that I'll probably never even open?

The typical argument that they want the profit from the sale of the CDs just doesn't wash, IMO. To sell the CDs, they have to buy them, which costs money, burn them, which costs money, package them, which costs money, print manuals and boxes, which costs money, distribute them which costs... you get the idea. They might make a small profit, but I'm sure it's peanuts compared to the profit they make off the monthly fees. Plus selling accounts online would be virtually pure profit.

And how many people haven't tried the game because they didn't want to front the money for the CDs? Potential market loss there.

But, then again, what do I know?

Just so I can claim that this post had something to do with the original topic, I would prefer the DVDs.

currently the total size of my eq directory is 2.67 GB (folders and sub-folders). I don't use custom UIs and had very few screenshots in there.

if my system crashed and I had to re-install via download...it would be nothing less than ultimate suckage. its painful enough as it is. I have every cd kunark and beyond. tried to install it all on my gf's computer last night and kept getting "missing xxxxx.dll file" message. running the 3 patch programs within the directory error after about an hour of running (i'm on cable).

they should offer a general installation DVD right now for current subscribers that could be bought nearly at cost. my disks are old and worthless and the download is impossible...even with broadband.

I chose the CD's for the simple fact that I don't have a DVD drive. I suppose I could get one, but that would just be a pain.

Then I thought about installing that sucker and realized it would be a pain to install it from 8-10 cd's as well. But I guess it's only once in a while you reinstall.

The long and short of it is, I just don't think they can put it on DVD's... they're just not as widespread as CD drives are.

It is true overall if your looking at all computers, but EQ2 is gonna be a nasty resource hog and is gonna require a top end computer. Most computers that fall into the catagory of being able to run EQ2 well will already have DVD Roms in them.

Yeah, I too would fall in the not buy catagory. But I picked two DVDs.

My EQ directory is 3.4 gigs, including a 12k cutom UI bit, not including my screenshots. I wonder what EQ 2 will start out with.

Well you got to think of it this way.. the average DVD-R you can buy in the store can hold hold 4.7 GB worth of info, and they are thinking 2? 9.4 is both DVD's are being filled to the brim.

Whereas 8-10 CDs, assuming the kind they use is the 700MB/80min kind..

For 8 Cds is 5.6 GB, 9 CDs is 6.3 GB, 10 is 7 GB

So average that out, and were looking at around a 7 GB install for EQ2.

Oh yea, forgot to mention, FFXI, which came on 5 CD's has a total install file of around 6 GB. SO my math up top could be seriously flawed (and probably is).

Kao did your 3d holographic statocube come with the transporter option? I can't seem to get mine to work. I know, I know. Go to File, Tools, Settings, and choose...transporter. But then I get this pop up that has two options, Auto or Manual. Both are grayed out and I can't choose either!
Please help!

See if you have the model fvKO4n56mw85e5r6678snms-786234786523978590238 B transporter module. If you do, It may need a slight program adjustment to function properly. Gently remove it with a class c nanospanner, and place it on a static free nonfriction surface, very, very carefully. Then locate the side maked with a large red Q, and hit it with a big hammer a few times.

If you have the A model, just go to start:settings:control panel:system:device manager:secret future tech settings:menu 48567 mark III: Glorbons: and de-select the "Grey out transporter boxes on sunday" option. Then hit the transporter matrix exactly 4 and 1/2 times with a large seabass.

That should do it.

OK,
I was able to follow you almost all the way, I have the model fvKO4n56mw85e5r6678snms-786234786523978590238 B transporter module. I was able to perform the required program adjustment, by gently removing it with a class c(all I had was the lower rated class b++, but it seemed to work) nanospanner, and the only place I had to put it wasn't exactly static free if you know what I mean, my evening meal remains supplied the non-friction surface. Then I located the side marked with a large red Q(mine was Qsub1), and hit it with a BFH a few times.

I have the A model, did go to start:settings:control panel:system:device manager:secret future tech settings:menu 48567 mark III: Glorbons: and de-select the "Grey out transporter boxes on sunday" option. Then hit the transporter matrix exactly 4 and 1/2 times with a large seabass.(Again all I had was a small guppy.)
But...
Problem solved and on my way, I owe you one. Thanks....again for your magnificent tech help.
