No effect from pet HP buffs?Follow

#1 Jan 21 2004 at 3:44 AM Rating: Good
I made a new enchanter tonight and had a druid friend buff my summoned pet. The druid cast "Skin Like Nature" on the pet; the buff appeared in the pet buff window, and the pet appeared to be at full health.

However, the pet still died after taking what I'd estimate to be 20hp of damage -- what gives?

what level is the spell skin like nature? if that is a higher spell it may show up on your pet, but will not work on him.

if your pet is that low a level (im guessing level 1 or 4 pet) dont bother with it. wait until 8th before you start using a pet. the level 1 and 4 chanter pets are pathetic and maybe give you enough time to get off 1 spell at level 1, or 2 or 3 spells at level 4 pet.

from all the pets i have seen chanter pets at lower levels are the weakest of them all.

yes HP/AC/stat+ buffs do work on pets, but keep in mind pets are limited just like players by what spells will work on them, even if they are not restricted to what can be cast upon them. hope that helps abit.

Personally, I'd consider "do not use your pet til level 8" to be fairly bad advice. Even if it doesn't have enough HP to tank, it still does ok damage. Tank for the pet and let it do damage if it's too weak to tank for you, don't just ignore it.

Skin like Nature is a 49th level spell. It is castable on first level characters, and DOES buff their hitpoints; I know this, because it was cast on me at the same time that it was cast on my pet, and it most assuredly buffed my hitpoints.

However, it had no effect on my pet's hit points.

I have since spoken to a mage friend who passed along an observation that no pet hit point buffs, from spells or items, seem to be working anymore. Does anyone have further information on this?

its possibly a bug, i would not be supprised. i have not played with my nec much since last patch other then in a support roll so pet has only had self buffs on it from my nec.

the biggest reason i make the comment on chanters not using their pets until 8th or higher is for a few.

1. pets are a HUGE mana sink.

2. they will if you are lucky at level 1 last you 1 fight, maybe 2 fights. at level 4 they will last a bit longer, but not much. again the large amount of mana cost = more down time, thus no fighting for xp.

3. by getting in and doing a little melee you will learn to time your spells when you are getting hit. this is so important for a chanter above all other casters in the game. IMHO at least. a chanter that is getting intereupted can not do their job of CC work, thus are worthless. it is important to learn how to time the start of your spell with the end of an attack from your target.

4. in addition to above you will also get some defense skill ups. not much with the 'newbie' level system now, but some is better then none. every defense skill up = FREE AC. that is never a bad thing.

5. without those 2 spells you can save your self some coin, and even more by not having to buy tiny daggers before you hit level 8 and get a real pet that can do some fighting for/with you and last more then 1 or 2 fights.

now that is for the untwinked chanter. for the twinked chanter go for it as you most likely will have enough HP/AC to deal with melee while your pets does its job as a very very cheap DoT.

My shammy pet will no longer shrink with either Timy Companion or Shrink, like he used to. It must still work on some pets because I see tiny pets, but I have tried it a bunch of times on mine, and it no longer works. Any other folks have this problem?
On the other side, I can now make him huge (bah! poor trade),

LoL Kelti on the huge part.

i have not tried my tiny companion, but i was in a raid and one of the other necs did shrink their pet.

I know that Tiny Companion doesn't visually work on Beastlord warders, and from what I read in previous patch messages and comments on them, they keep trying to fix it but it never works. However, just because they don't look smaller, doesn't mean that the area they block doesn't get smaller. I think that even though when you cast the spell they don't appear to shrink, you can still get around them more easily. I have no proof for this though.

Game on,

Hmmm... I don't know Singall. I played my chanter back in the day with no twinking at all. I honestly found that the first 8 levels were the most useful pet levels of all. Past that they become steadily less useful.

The pet isn't that tough, but it doesn't have to be. It just has to survive the battle. Since it can't follow any of your orders, you can't do much about whether it tanks or you do early on anyway, so you're going to be getting hit most of the time whether you use the pet or not. I just remember that I could kill significantly faster with the pet then without. Chanters have totally **** poor damage dealing ability early on. You basically drop a choke (or whatever it is at that level), and engage in melee. Most of the time, your pet will just be an extra dot anyway. Your pet will do pretty good damage in relation to your own, especially for those first 8 levels. I never had a problem with pets dying too often, and so never had a problem with being able to afford tiny daggers. Honestly, a low level chanter has so few tools to work with that if his pet is getting killed constantly, he's probably just fighting stuff that's too tough for him anyway. I'm very much in the "kill lots of moderately tough mobs" camp when it comes to exp grinding. Necro and mages are able to use their pets to take on yellows and reds early on, even untwinked. Enchanters simply can't do that, pet or no.

But that's just my rememberances. I started that character a loooooong time ago, so maybe things have changed.

6 in 1, half a dozen in the other i suppose with the low level pets.

i tried it both ways (pre newbie adjustment like it is now) and for me found that no pet worked best for me at least not the level 1 pet.

chanter pets are great dots in the long run as long as it can stay alive. maybe i was just using it wrong who knows. im a necro and a bard now so i use pets all the time, but not the way a chanter does.

One of my best friends in game plays a mage and his pet tank pop all the time. He soloes the soulscreem belt room in Veskar as well. Its crazy. He completely gives it a full set of summoned armor including uber haste items with nice stats, and then gets virtue for garn to. I come with him all the time in veskar. Lol thats where i got my mantel of ill omen that i am wearing. We were on our way to camp and he spoted the named guy. Got my nartharsis in there as well but i gave it to a friend.

any way buffs do affect pets. even mah rangah attack class buffers =P.

also i have a question.

can you zone with your pet once you ahve the poket pet aa ablity?

The enchanter pet is the most powerfull of all pet classes through level 11, it has a magic attack and does more damage than mag and necro pets, try soloing a wisp at level 5 with cloth armor and a rusty dagger with any other class.also about three years ago verant nerfed hp buffs on pets, supposed to be any pet with fewer than 51 hp's can't be buffed with hp's, due to the old mistwalker scimitar exploits. also to say its the most powerfull is a bit excessive, i never played beast, so i don't know what their pets can do, but i know that necro and magician pets don't hit magical untill level 12, all the hp's in the world won't help them if they don't do any damage.

My wife and I recently decided to go to a PvP server just for fun, and play a coupla characters into their 50s. I played a Chanter and a Rogue, and while playing my chanter levels 1-8, the pet alone allowed me to take on opponent after opponent without many losses.

When I played my Chanter on my regular server 3 1/2 years ago (as a mule, just trying to get a little experience to allow me to travel a little bit), the pet helped me tremendously. No, it's no tank, it's damage, and at low levels damage is hard to deal (unless you twink and/or buff, which is so pointless) with an enchanter.
