SPELL: IDENTIFYFollow

#1 Jan 05 2004 at 9:12 AM Rating: Decent
I have found this to be a very useless spell (like true north). Everytime I have used the spell to identify an item it gives me the exact same info as when I right click on it. What is the purpose of this spell other than to cause us to spend money on something that is worthless.

It is a handy spell for increasing you Divination skill. For a Magician it is not very mana intensive and medium in spell level. I found chain casting Identify a very useful way to increase this vital skill, since Invisibility is also a divination spell (a spell you don't want to fizzle in an emergency).

It has limited but valuable uses. At times you'll be collecting things that look very similar but are different when identified - lucid shards for the VT key come to mind. There are 10 of them, and it typically takes a long time to collect them; chances are by the time you have 8 of the 10 you're going to have a hard time remembering where they came from unless you've made a list. Identifying them can help.

But yes, I think the spell was probably put in as a way to raise Divination for some classes that might not use Div very often except for invis. In that sense it is very like True North, which is really pointless now that everyone has max senses heading.

Identify used to be much more useful than it is now - especially for determining the nature of items involved in quests - the Epic quests would have been a lot harder and would have involved a ton more trial and error procedures if you hadn't been able to get the extra "hints" from casting Identify.

Now that you're practically told
"This item is needed for the new uber quest announced in the patch message."
when you click on an unknown item, it's usefulness has dwindled - much like other spells like True North - to being a skill-raiser.
