Screen ResolutionFollow

I am just curious what other people with similar setups as me use for their screen resolution. My computer is rather new, with an onboard Nvidia video card, one of the GeForce 4 line. I have 512 MB of RAM but 64 MB of it is dedicated to the video card (something which was not advertised Smiley: mad but I can deal with it). I have all the Luclin models activated, and my spell effects and sky are set low. The only laggy places are PoK when I first zone or log in, and the Bazaar (of course). Oh, and my monitor is a 17" flat screen (not LCD).

So, my native resolution is 1024x768. It's a good size, but I would like a bit larger resolution. I fiddled around a bit and although the text shrinks I know I can use the /chatfontsize commands to increase that. But have people had very noticeable issues with performance when doing this? Or does the increased viewing area more than make up for a slight increase in lag? Or are there even any stability problems when increasing resolution past the native desktop one? I will often Alt-Tab out of EQ to look something up, or just browse the web during downtime, will different resolutions make a difference?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Game on,

Well I have probably one of the crappiest computers around to play eq on. Only 256 MB ram , p4 1.8 ghz, old *** 32 MB vid card. I use the second highest resolution ( I think its 1024-the one below 1200), works just fine - though I have all models and effects off of course. I tried going to the 1200, it increase lag a little, but since the 1024 was plenty of screen space for me, switched back. So, based on that, I'd say you should have no problem at all switching to higher resolution.

Kozul you are absolutely wrong! I have by far one of the worst computers for Everquest. It is about 5 years old, amd k62 processor which is equal to pentium 2, it has 400mhz... yes thats what i said 400 MEGAHERTZ, 256mb of ram, which i upgraded from 64mb of ram, 32mb video card, which is very old and disgusting... i upgraded that from no video card at all... i have to have no new character models on. clip plane all the way down ( i cant see anything ) have to know exactly where im going lol. I have to have it on the lowest graphic settings. But i still manage to play somehow. So if your computer is p4 1.8ghz, 512mb of ram, and 32mb video card. Please be greatful for the computer you have. If I even go to Luclin ( forget ever going to PoP) or the new expansions. I get such bad lag with everything down that I cant stand it. its hard to play in groups and I tend to die alot more than I should.

You can easily run EQ in 1280x1024 or even 1600x1280 if you want, but there may be issues with lag. If you really want the larger resolution, try fiddling with the quality of models, texture compression and some of the other options available under the OPTIONS button of the login interface. Other intensive features are spell effects, reducing them or turning them off does wonders for smoothness for me.

You may experience a less fluent image in higher resolutions due to your monitor being forced to a lower refresh rate.

Personally I run 1280x1024, all models on, low graphics quality, no mip mapping, texture compression and sound off on a PIII-800mhz with a GF2 ULTRA. It works fine, but I do lag in certain areas.

I have a Toshiba laptop 1.2MHz with only 512Mb RAM and an Nvidia 32Mb card and I run at 1024x768 with little to no lag (except for the heavily populated areas - PoK, Bazaar, etc).

I think that whatever resolution you feel comfortable with is what you should use. I only have my 15" laptop screen and by reducing the font size and chat window sizes, I can still have my view pretty uninterrupted. Oh, and I also fade everything to like 15% so I can see right through it.
