The Deadmines (commonly abbreviated as VC after the final boss of the instance), once a prosperous source of precious metals and ores for Stormwind, are no longer in control of the Alliance. The most elite of the Defias Brotherhood operate within its dank walls, and it would be very difficult to take them on by yourself. I would suggest a minimum of AT LEAST level 18, though you should really be 21+ to have a chance at the instanced portion, and the majority of your party 22 or 23+ to have a good shot at the final boss. Now, there are two sections to this dungeon.
The first area, called the dungeon portion, non-instance area, or various other things, is public. You'll find that the enemies here are not too difficult, mostly comprised of Defias Diggers and Workers. These poor grunts are not elite and can be defeated by level 18 or 19 players with little difficulty. However, you'll soon run into Elite Defias, including Defias Watchmen, Overseers, and Conjurers, as well as higher-leveled enemies in side-tunnels and more remote pockets of the mine. You cannot solo these until you are near the mid-20s, and even then, two or three at a time is suicide...soloing this first section of the mines is not advisable until you are a very cautious and smart level 30 - 35.
As you make your way through the non-instanced portion of the mine, you're bound to spot a purple-toned area. This area is cursed and populated by undead miners. You can complete the "Oh Brother..." and "Collecting Memories" quests here, NOT in the instance! The undead here include Skeletal Miners, Undead Dynamiters and Undead Excavators, all around level of 17 or 18 elites. They can inflict some nasty effects on you, so pay close attention to your weakened state after battles. Near the end of the circling undead mine tunnels, you'll find Foreman Thistlenettle. Try to clear the immediate area of regular Undead, then go for the Foreman, who is a little more challenging and elite at a level of 19/20. This whole area is a good measure of how you will do in the Instance.
The Instance itself can be found at the west end of the mine. The map changes as you go up and down "floors", so exact directions are complicated. Head south until the purple section of the mine appears on your map, then head west. You'll spot the blue instance portal a bit below you. Jump off the bridge or ledge, make sure any attacking miners and Defias are killed so no emergencies occur before entering the Instance, and jump into the portal!
It's time for the Instance. This area is NOT public. Only you and your party will appear here, so there will be no interference from anyone not in your group. Also, if you die here, you must run all the way from Sentinel Hill to the portal again (if you cannot be revived / raised / rez'd by a party member). You will automatically respawn in the first room of the Instance. Your way to the party will most likely be clear, but patrols may have re-spawned. If your way is blocked by a patrol of elite Defias, have your party work their way backwards through the Instance to clear a path for you.
You begin in a safe room. A little further on ahead will be Defias Miners, which are basically fodder if your party is over level 20. The real problems in this first area will be the patrolling Defias Overseers, Defias Wizards, and Defias Taskmasters. The Overseers are melee, the Wizards use magic, and the Taskmasters run around like ninnies while using ranged guns. They'll be in the level 17-19 Elite range. Your party can probably handle an Elite and a Miner, but anything more and you have a problem, so try to make smart pulls and make effective use of your crowd control.
You will eventually reach a huge door. Open it. Inside is the Foreman of the mines, Rhahk'Zor. He is a huge Ogre with two elite Defias close by that will assist him if directly assaulted. Try to pull Rhahk'Zor when he's distanced from these elites, so you can focus your damage output on him. He's fairly easy but can pack quite a punch, so keep your melee healed during the fight. Once he's down, clean up his room. You'll probably have to fight the two elite henchmen in there at the same time, so prepare for that, and perhaps get a sheep off on one of them if anyone in your party has it handy.
You'll emerge from the boss's room in a split tunnel. However, before engaging the enemies in here, stay put for a while. Heal, eat, buff, or whatever you need. Eventually, a patrol of walking Defias will come from BEHIND you, from the areas you've already cleared. Take them out (you'll have to fight two or three elites at once most likely) or risk having them attack you when you're already engaged with the enemies in the tunnels. Once they're gone, move on.
The split to the left leads to a dead end, but occasionally a named mob elite called Miner Johnson appears within regular miners. He has nice drops, so kill the poor sot. He is around level 18 or 19. The right split leads you past more miners and patrolling Defias elites, and eventually to another large door. Open it, and be careful.
In this room is where the Goblins, allied with the Defias, create tools and machinery and ship parts for them. The overseer of this room is a goblin called Sneed...who is in that huge machine called a Shredder. You want to pull him AFTER you clear every other Goblin in the room. Use smart pulling techniques to eliminate the Goblin Woodcarvers in the room. There is one behind the stacks of wood in front of you when you enter and another near the exit door. There are two or three goblins in the same area as the Shredder is. Wait until Sneed pilots his Shredder up onto that hill in the back, then pull the Goblins there. Once all the Goblins are dead, rest up, then get Sneed's Shredder. However, after defeating the Shredder, Sneed himself will leap out of it and attack.
In this next small curve of rock tunnel, you'll see Defias Strip Miners have replaced the standard Miners. However, they work basically the same, and are still party fodder. You still need to look out for the patrolling Defias, including Defias Evokers, and also realize that Goblins are now working the mines as well. Reach the next big door and open it.
This next room is basically one huge smelter. Firstly, stick to the left wall all the way down, and stick even harder against it on the bottom floor. There are two types of enemies here. The "easy" ones are the Goblin Craftsmen, who are basic melee attackers. However, the Goblin Engineers are dangerous. Although their levels remain in the 18/19 range, they not only attack from a distance, making pulls a lot more annoying, but they deploy a robotic pet that acts as a second mob. So realize that if you accidentally pull two Goblin Engineers, that's 4 separate mobs beating on your party. Single every Goblin out! Remember the ones on the central platform too. You want to clear out some of the Goblins on the circular walkway around the central smelter platform, but eventually, you want to kill those there too. As you approach the exit door, take care to avoid provoking Gilnid, the Smelter and an elite boss Goblin (level 19/20) until all his workers are taken care of. He is nothing to worry about once you have him on his own, as long as your party is in their 20s.
This next patrol is important because A) It is composed of THREE Defias elites and B) It takes a long time for them to head down that ramp. So take a break, look for chests, eat and drink, or anything else. I, personally, like to start a dance party. Eventually, the patrol reaches you, and you can dispatch them. Just don't underestimate them, since they're three in number.
Once they're taken care of, move on. You'll find that the next large door is locked. You'll need to use the cannon to blow the door, but first you'll need gunpowder. You can find it in a nook near the cannon. Now, if anyone in your group can lockpick, they can lockpick the door to enter the next area unnoticed. If you use the cannon to blast open the door, you'll have to deal with two or three elites.
These are the Defias Pirate and Defias Squallshaper, both level 19/20. The Defias Pirate also sends out a parrot called a Defias Companion.
Now, prepare for a warm welcome to the Defias' pirate ship. They're preparing to blast through the rock wall and sail out into the sea with all the stuff they've stolen from Elwynn Forest and Westfall, but your party will put a stop to that. Fight your way down the dock, selectively defeating Defias elites. Once you reach the ramp heading up to the ship, have your party stand back. The next boss has a war-stomp style attack that will stun your party while he runs back to an unopenable chest. If you're too close to the chest, he'll have time to retrieve a weapon from the chest and start attacking again while you're still stunned. Now, send your tank up to Mr. Smite and attract his attention.
Take out his henchmen first. If Smite uses his stomp and stuns the group, that's 10 free seconds of damage for him and his henchmen. So have the tank catch Smite's hate, then work on the henchmen. Once they die, focus on Mr. Smite.
Pull the Defias elites and Goblin Shipbuilders on the bow of the ship first, so your party has free access to the ramp and "path split". Once you've killed them, take the left path around the other side of the ship, i.e. the side facing a rock wall and not towards the docks you just fought through. Dispatch Defias, but be careful, because a little further on ahead is a level 20 Murloc elite called Cookie, the ship's cook. Isolate her, and defeat her. If your warriors know Hamstring, or if your casters can freeze, use it early and often. Cookie decides to flee early in the fight, and is very fast.
Make a mental note of that ramp reaching to what looks like a cave. That's the back exit to the Instance. Once you can't go ahead any further, turn around and run back to the bow of the ship, and this time take the other side.
Now, cautiously work your way up the ramps and platforms. When you reach the top deck, stick to the left to avoid Captain Greenskin and his posse. Once the deck is clear, position your group at the foot of the ramp leading to the central area of the deck. Now grab Greenskin, a level 21 elite Goblin. He brings two friends, dispatch them at your own discretion. He's not too tough. Any 21+ party can take care of him. once the deck is clear, position yourself up against the wall facing that dark doorway into the small room, but don't get too close. Inside is the final boss, Edwin VanCleef, the Defias Kingpin. I would recommended everyone be at level 22 or above.
Firstly, get your party healed and ready. Apply buffs. Eat food, drink potions. Edwin VanCleef will come out with two Defias Blackguard, level 20 elites in their own right. You MUST kill them before Van Cleef! Your tank will be almost overwhelmed by Van Cleef's quick, powerful attacks, and with two added elites attacking him, he's as good as dead. Have him keep VanCleef's attention, but quickly shift focus to the two Defias Blackguards. They should go down relatively easy if the party focuses on one, then the other. If you do not kill these Blackguards, VanCleef will summon an extra two halfway through the fight. If you have the quest activated, you can loot his head. If this is your first time slaying him, you can loot a quest item letter.

Concerning the dungeon itself, for a level 10-15 it can be quite the challenge, but I think the drops may be worth it, especially the Leather Set which I can't remember the name. Anyway, I'm out !
Blasted through all areas, until the last two big battles. Our group was pretty inexperienced and it took a couple of attempts. It's definitely worth taking a few minutes to make sure that everyone knows exactly what they are meant to be doing before the final battle.
You have to kill those defias miners as quickly as possible, keep an eye out for the elite mobs, and stand back when they wander by, untill you've got the tunnel cleared, as they tend to run around a lot, dragging al those miners along with them, wich can make things difficult. I just barely kept my pet alive killing that goblinhredder thing, but if you inmediately run away after you kill him, the goblin dude that comes out of it won't attack you, and you can savely regain health before killing him. Same goes for the canon, if you use it 3 elite mobs will come running, but if you stand back far enough, they won't notice you, and leave (:
It took me a long time, and I did die a few times, in one room I got raped by 2 elite overseers from behind, while attacking some goblins; with the doors open they wander all over the place, so you have to keep a very close eye on your minimap, and every now and than, go back a bit. I had a lot of trouble with the pirates, as they kept running to their buddies for help, and when I got to the ship, Smite and his rogues killed me (he just walked right through my freezing trap :S) When I came back from the dead and was at the beginning, the instance had apparantly been reset (maybe cause I was taking so long?) and all mobs had respawned, which was when I had enough and gave up, so I never actually got to the end, not sure if it would be doable either at this lvl, I wouldn't recommend it, unless you like a challenge(and dying) :P
I soloed the first part(for the quest underground assault, which drops by that goblinshredderthing) as lvl 24 bytheway, although I did die once, after kiling the shredder, I hadn't expected the guy to come out and kill me (my pet had already died)
Make sure you stock up on arrows, I had almost run out near the end, also a tank pet is an absolute must, there's no way it will be able to survive more than 2 elites at once long enough otherwise. It's a great way to learn how to pull carefully, especially with the goblins in that round room, as some of them have an elite mechanical thing, so if you pull carelessly, you can end up with 4-5 elites at once.
You'll end up with a whole bunch of nice drops though, I got a lot of money out of it, even if I didn't get to the end :D
It takes an hour and a half though XD Drinking takes so much time.
My 29 pally on Aerie Peak can too(not as well twinked).. but it has more trouble in some places and takes more time drinking :P
Green Gear can do it at 29 if it's very current (for warriors, pallys and that type).
Some slower servers may not be able to equip a toon in full level 29 "of the Bear" gear though.
Demonsoul is like that: Gear? Not much on ah.
It's nice to be able to farm your first instance though.
Too bad I'm lazy and have a chanter alt... nearly everything gets DEed
I was soloing it at the time, a ways past the level of the quest, so it may have a level minimum to drop thats not the same as the quest for all I know ;)
Caronny--19 twink
Edriss--40 druid
....and many more
or would it be best to wait until i could get a better one?
P.S.
sorry i don't know everything about WoW, but when u bind with something, does it get better as you level?
Lot of good drops for lower levels, the level 18 got about 7 green drops and a blue I believe.
Leader - Peaceful Annihilation
80 Frost Mage
Tailor/Enchanter
Kardayne - 76 Holy Priest
Thunderhorn
or should i wait for lv 40 and doomkin?
But also you won't get any quest credits for anything in these dungeons as a raid group, so keep that in mind. However, the head of Van Cleef DID drop from DM when we ran it, but I'm not sure if they got the credit from looting it or not. Even so they should still be able to turn it in to complete...
Give it a shot. Worst thing possible is you waste a lot of time and spend some silver repairing armor. Not a catastrophie for learning what you can and can't do at this time. :-)
I died once where the mechanical shredder was because the goblin I was trying to pull ran back and pulled other mobs, including the shredder...so from then on I started using Curse of Recklessness more to be on the safe side. Died again where Smite was because I tried pulling him without noticing the two rogue gaurds stealthed at the entrance to the ramp leading to him.....so I ended up getting raped by him, the two rogues, and the two pirates that were standing by him and their birds. Getting him the second time was a lot easier though because I started by pulling one of the rogues, which in turn only pulled the other rogue and Smite, without aggroing the pirates.
I had my soulstone cast at nearly all times. If you're a soloing lock, bring lots of soul shards (I started with 16 and left with 1, but then again, I'm pretty cautious and paranoid).
Everything was fairly easy as long as I stayed patient. Sucks that I couldn't beat VC though =(...Killed at least one of his gaurds and got him down to at least 30% health but he called more gaurds and I couldn't keep my voidwalker alive so I ended up getting pwned -_-'
EDIT: after i died as mentioned, i tried again (with instance reseted) and this time easily beat Rhak'Zor thanks to strategy. although as i tried killing the two elites, 2 more walked in and i died...

An over-confident player thinks they can do everything themselves.
I got to Smite and beat down his guards, used evasion around mid-way to dodge some of the stacking damage. I killed off the guards and then vanished to heal; Mr. Smite went back to the top of the ramp. When I try to pull Mr. Smite again, however, I aggro two Defias Pirates and their @#%^ing birds. I try to kill them off while defending against Mr. Smite as well, but I didn't have Evasion OR Vanish ready. I died. :(
Nonetheless, since I took out the two Pirates, when I resurrected I had no problem raping Mr. Smite.
At VC, I survived while using common sense. I sapped a guard, pulled VC out, aimed on killing him first while 4, and then 5, other guards are slamming me. I drink a potion before I die so I can kill off VC, (completely forgot about vanish) ran back to the wheel and healed. His guards went back into the little wooden crib, and then I healed up and beat their asses afterwards.
So, it was successful, and I'm not even a twink. :)
After it was over, I had missed the "Oh Brother" quest, so decided to join another group to run it again.
Terrible. With out knowing it, I joined a "TOUR" - some level 40 taking a bunch of level 11-13's through the deadmines just so they could "need" every single item, and ninja the treasure chests. I quit halfway through, because the 40 wouldn't let me even get in on any of the action, even after I told him I wouldn't pull ANY adds, I'd just assist from behind him.
It was so frustrating! So I guess my only advice to people is that if they want to actually PLAY the DM, be clear before entering what kind of group you're in, who does what, and make sure it's not a "TOUR" by some high level just wanting to get experience while a bunch of n00bs rob the place blind.

Yeah, a level 16 paladin wanted to come along for the ride. Every 5 seconds, he was asking "what's defias gunpowder?" and "how long is this place?" and "can i open that chest over there?"
Anyway, after a series of bad pulls by the mage (stupid idea in the first place), we ended up getting wiped by smite. Then, a level 23 NE hunter decides to help us out. He did more harm than good with his damn pet. We got up onto the ship and his pet aggroed every single goblin/pirate on the first level of the ship, and they chased us all the way back to mine area. Needless to say, we got wiped again.
I'm not ever doing this again with a hunter, because this wasn't the first time they royally @#%^ed everything up for the team that I've been on.

I am amazed that someone as low level as a 19 can talk like he knows what he is talking about. If you or your group knew what they were doing, that would be a very powerful group. You have two healers, a tank, two DPS, two CC, and a off-tank. And that hunter whose pet you claim to have ruined your time, must have been a really stupid person. Either that, or your group didn't work with him. Hunters are very powerful, but you have to listen/obey/DO WHAT THEY WANT. I have been in a non-guild group, where i was blaimed for a wipe. I knew that they where really stupid, but they proved it by blameing me. for I had not been the puller. Ive been in groups where expeirenced hunter's alts were pulling. But this group had a Rogue that was CONVINCED that he could pull better than me, but he had not had any experence pulling, or even seeing me pull.

A good soloing level for the Deadmines is probably 40. I had no trouble soloing this when my rogue was level 40.
If you are going to go as a low level (something like 14 or less) with a high level escort, try for someone with skill at controlling agro. Also make their lives easier and stand back. Low levels pull agro incredibly easily and can die fast to elites. I've run noobs with my 60+ rogue and they can die faster then you can run over and hit the mob even once. Make sure that they stay a good distance back and whatever they do, don't let them run up and join the fight unless the room is clear.
Just a note for questees, there are a couple hidden Deadmines quests in Stormwind. Scroll up this page and click the quest links to see where to get them.
Hopefully this covers some questions and information.

Nice dagger on named murlock that runs up and down length of beach.
I then make my way to the mine entrance from the rear of the building to avoid alliance groups prepping for their VC runs, and try to slip in quietly.
Until you reach the instance, you have to watch for both alliance and mobs.
Lots of good drops, from lots of cloth to lots of greens and the occaisional blue. Bring LARGE bags.
My 17 hunter fills bags and hearths, I solo completely through it with my 38 Orc hunter.
Good hunting.
Almost forgot, there are a couple of quests available to both sides from pirate ghost on lighthouse island off of beach.

You don't need to reset the instance if party members get killed, even if completely wiped. Just run back from the graveyard near Sentinel Hill and you're able to rez once back inside the instance. Typically the only thing you have to worry about while making your way back to your party, is getting lost or running into patrols. I usually just hide off to the side somewhere and let the patrols pass on by.
There are a couple of times when patrols will appear behind you after finishing an area. This can be bad if your health is low after a battle. Watch for it.
On the second platform before reaching the ship's deck, if your party is hard pressed, there is a side platform (I forget what it is) that you can jump to temporarily to avoid the pirate melee types from wiping your party.
Finally, in the fight against VC and his stealthed ninjas, if it's going badly concentrate on VC and loot the head before dying. At least you will have completed the quest:) If you get wiped, and any have not looted VC's head, get back there as quick as you can. It was still there waiting for one of my alts.
Good luck!

VC....
kill rogues first.. if you get lock and then get half way through the door you can back slash the rogue on the right.. kill him in cat form.. switch out and rejuvenate, bear form and kill other rogue.. kill vc and watch out for the 2 added rogues when he dies..
after VC is dead..
jump over the side of the boat on to cookie... wait for him to get in the center .. you won't aggro any adds if you kill him there..
good luck.. any needed help. just ask.. I farm VC regularly..

...but you knew all of this already.
The point? Just that soloing an instance for items for the toon doing the soloing is a waste of time.
