Thousand Needles

Thousand Needles is a huge canyon in Kalimdor. To the east, this vast area opens up into the Shimmering Flats, a large expanse of salt flats that is being used by various Goblin and Gnomish engineers for their races. Despite the barren terrain, there is a harsh splendor here and the view from the tops of the mesas can be quite spectacular.

Getting Here

Alliance

Alliance players will get here from the north. They can either take the boat to Theramore Isle in Dustwallow Marsh or fly to Mudsprocket. Then, they will run west to the Barrens and follow the road south to the Great Lift (avoiding the guards) and then into Thousand Needles. Alternatively, they can head south from Ratchet in the Barrens.

Either way, the path from Theramore or Mudsprocket tends to be faster but is far more dangerous due to the level of mobs in Dustwallow Marsh.

Horde

Horde players have a much easier time getting to this zone than Alliance. From Camp Taurajo in the Barrens, take the southern road to the Great Lift and take this down into Thousand Needles.

Travel Paths

There is only one flight path in Thousand Needles and that is at Freewind Post.

However, Alliance players can use the outpost at Thalanaar to the west or Gadgetzan the south to navigate the zone.

Shimmering Flats is an awesome place for grinding. Leveled from 31 - 34 (not exclusively tho as I was also mixing in some quests) from the Silithids in southwest Shimmering Flats - there's tons of them and the respawn time is hilarious at around 1 or 2 minutes a spawn. Adds can be a problem as they are all so squished together, but you literally cannot run out of Silithids.
Horde feedback.

You don't have to be early 30s as a Horde character for Thousand Needles as these alliance players are posting. Freewind Post and Whitereach make it entirely possible to start this region at level 25. You may have to grind a few levels around 28 if your non-healing or pet class though.

I usually finish this region at about level 33. You can go to Dustwallow or Desolace afterwards. I've never tried Dustwallow, but they added a ton of new content so Im gonna try it on my newest toon.

I avoid STV like the plague.

Don't be confused by the hard to reach place though. Alliance members come in through Feralas and Tanaris a ton. It's almost as much ganking here as anywhere else.

i came here looking for iron ore, as a allaince member i heard Arathi Highlands was great! the problem was i was way 2 low a lvl 2 go there. so, i found out from my guild about Thosand Needles. after nearly an hour of walking i finally got there. to my disapiontment, the iron ore spawns in places where i was too low al lvl 2 go anyway. frustrated, i used my hearthstone 2 leave. just lvl up 2 go 2 Arathi all alliance players...

Another reason why Druids rule. I've never been to Thousand needles before level 37-40 before, and most of the quests there are early 30's, so it's never been too fruitful. (Salt Flats is a good spot to grind, though, as Bigberto says.)
As a 27 druid with Aquatic form, the swim from ratchet is time-consuming, but you can outrun the mobs in the dangerous areas on the way.
With Aquatic form and Cat form with Feral swiftness(x2) you can outrun anything you might meet and get all the way to Gadgetzan no problem. It's a safe run from Gadge to Thousand needles for anybody.
This time I'm too LOW for the quests in Needles, but I got two flight paths (Thalnaar and Gadgetzan) to come back to in a few levels. I like the quests around the racetrack.
Salt Flats is a GREAT spot if you have skinning, The rest of Needles is very good for Mining, nowhere in needles is great for herblism, though, IMHO.

So how do the alliance get to a thousand needles?

You run all the way south thru the Barrens until you come to the Tauren's lift. It's guarded by 2 horde guards around lvl 30. I had heard two theories onhow to get down - jump - or kill the guards. My partner and I took our Lvl 31 hunter and Lvl 28 druid there last night. I was all for killing the guards, but one problem. When we arrived there was a group of 4-5 horde pvps with ?? for lvls that surrounded us and constantly challenged us to duel whilst emitting fetching chicken sounds. Now I don't want to be a suicide bunny or honor point for one of these clowns and as soon as I killed a guard I would have turned pvp on. So there was only one thing for it. We ran at the cliff and leapt into the air (my hunter doing a nice elf somersault) - hence our Thelma and Louise moment! I am not sure what my wolf made of it all. But am happy to say there is a graveyard right at the bottom of the cliff for all of you jumper out there. Oh for an engineers parachute cloak!

PS. First look at Thousand Needles is it rocks for hunters of my lvl - loads of lvl 30 ish animals - open spaces - gorgeous! Nice looking tameables too (though having just tamed Humar - the black lion king from the barrens - I have my keeper pet).

PPS. Passing the bottom of the lift when touring the area I noticed a level 40 tauren guard, so caution needed for all you pre-40s who use the more sedate descent method.

1K needles is the greatest place ever! the salt flats make this place amazing for grinding/questing from lvl 30-37. Took my human pally there to see what i could do here and realized that thisd place was amazing! the iron deposits really upped my mining and, in-turn blacksmithing. basilks, turltes, vultures and scorpids were perfect grinding enemies and the quests given by the gnomes and goblins were easy enough to complete. Good money farming too. Few greens dropped for me, but the whites and greys sold for huge amounts in stacks. I recommend this place to all my guildies, cause people tend to get sick of STV really quick.

Harpies and geomancers. They drop some silvers and wool/silk cloth which sell for a lot. I went from level 20-35 in 2 days hunting these. Good luck.
