I make it 19, unless it's changed at some point? 6 mithril bars, plus 2 inlaid mithril cylinders at 5 bars each, and a mithril casing which takes another 3 bars.

When i first made mine, it would let out a "Battle Squawk", at some point in combat. This was a short term attk. power buff for the party. It doesnt happen any more though. I still love the chicken, but i miss the squawk

I don't know why you are having this issue. Mine still squawks... 5% melee speed bonus is nice; it buffs my dragonling, and in groups it helps my melee pals -- though, as a mage, it doesn't help me individually: not that i'm complaining =)
