If you follow the Southfury River north of Orgimmar, the borders of Ashenvale and Azshara come together. Swim up north along the river and find a spot on the east side. This is Azshara, and you'll catch these fish there. You will not catch any along the west Ashenvale side of the river though. The great thing about this location is that there are no mobs or enemy players around at all. Peaceful and quiet.
We are able to catch these fish as soon as the server clock shows it's nighttime (moon symbol) until 6:00am. The areas are castable at lvl 180 however difficult to successfully catch them without a lure.
In relation to being horde, my favorite location to fish these is right on the river beside the Feralas fp in Camp Mojache. Easy enough. =)
I caught about 50 of these between 04:30 and 05:30 server time in Lake Mennar in Azshara. I caught 14 when fishing for an hour at 22:30-23:30 server time, so it seems they are more active between the 00:00-06:00 time frame.
For those of us lower level players looking for this fish - be carefull about the area north of the twin colosus - I was there this morning and told I was too low level to fish here (my fishing is at 245). I caught some of these fish in the Hinterlands with no attractors except for Big Iron pole. Anyway, the area north of the twin colosus is crawling with level 61, 62 and 63 dragonkin elites.
No idea what you are all on about. The best place to catch these is from the Verdantis River in Feralas. You can catch them during the day, but the drop rate is higher at night. I dont use a Lure, my skill is 300, plus 25 on my rod.
When I go looking for these, I fish in EPL outside Stratholme (while waiting for my group) or in the Thorondil River.
It requires bait at 300, and my catch ratio isn't very good, but the other fish I catch are level 45 fish and can be passed to high level hunters with cats and bears. I figure it's worth it.
I'm not sure about that, you saying fish aren't limited by zone or area. To the best of my knowledge, I have never fished a lobster, mightfish or squid out of a river or lake. The reverse is also true, I've never caught Nightfins or Sunscales out on the open sea.
And sure, there's a chance of it happening, just like there's a chance of the Sun going supernova, that's not what we're talking about here tho.. we're talking about catching the fish reliably. I wouldn't advise anyone to "just start fishing" because you may not actually catch what you want in the quantities you want if you do.
The biggest problem with 40+ per hour is having the mental stamina to sit there for an hour.. I know I fish for 5 minutes and I'm already bored to tears. If I ever sit there for a full hour I will report how many I caught.
Anyways... I don't have a need to hide information from everyone so the places I can catch these reliably (meaning 1 in every 3-4 casts on average) is
Verdantis River in Feralas Skulk Rock (the river that runs by it) in Hinterlands
I've tried Azshara and I've tried Un'Goro but I just can't seem to get the same drop rates there. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. 300 skill.
Fishing in Azeroth has got to be one of the few things more boring than fishing in RL.
Here's what I do: I turn off Ambient Sounds (gets rid of the sounds of water sloshing, wind, etc) Turn up the sound so the bobber splash will get my attention. Cast and place my mouse of the bobber. Read or listen an some audio book with my hand resting on the mouse. Typically, the game will be silent until the splash of the fishing bobber. Reel in the fish on "splash" Lather, rinse, repeat...
When the sun dial turns to night, you can catch Nightfins in greater quantities.
You CAN catch these during the day.
Fish are not based on zones or areas. The catch rate is the same as drop rates for items. You have to be in an area where they CAN be caught and have sufficient skill to fish there.
I won't give up any information on where, when or how I collect these fish, but I will say I catch about better than 40 per hour.
Yup, you can only catch them at night, which is rather annoying :D Im getting my fishing up to 300, and i would like to get something out of it, since im a raiding-mana-whore :D Think i'll just get my skill up at night ;)
Btw i think it's actually Lightning Eel that you catch instead. I catch tons of them at day, none at night.
I found the best place to catch these is the river just north of Fire Plume Ridge in Un'Goro Crater. About 30% of the fish I caught there were Nightfin. Majority was Raw Redgill, with some Mithril Head Trout and Blackmouth mixed in. Anywhere else I tried I could only manage about 5% rate of Nightfin.
It doesnt have to be night if you go to the top of twin colossals you can fish them out, need over a 265 skill at least though, needed a fish attractor to catch them
This fish has been quite elusive of late. I was able to catch 7 prior to server maint. this morning. When Icecrown came back up, I was able to catch 10 more within approximately 2 hours. (Had tried several times over the past week or so and never caught one). Now, I have fished another 2+ hours and not a single nightfin to be had at Verdantis River. Logged another of my characters in and fished about 20 minutes in Moonglade area with no luck either.
This fish is just plain BROKE or someone hates casters a whole lot! I miss my Nightfin Soup :(
***EDIT*** Fish for these at night time ... have been able to catch them then!!!
I fished for these dang things for three hours and couldn't get even one. I tried Moonglade, Lake Elune'ara, Western Plaguelands, and Camp Mojache from the above list. Thottbot.com even had those zones listed and the worst fishing percent was like 10% The way I was fishing it is more like .01% So if anybody gets one somewhere I would really appreciate a post on where to fish em up.

Happy fishing!
Flew to Azshara, went down to the river and got it on 3rd cast.

In 10 mins I caught:
7 Raw Nightfin Snappers
1 Raw Mithril Head Trout
2 Oily Blackmouths
16 Raw Redgills
I had 215 in fishing skill and used a +100 lure (the aquadynamic fish attractor).
It was 02.00 at night.
/Nialla
lvl 61 druid
Caught 100 fishes.
53 raw Redgill
14 Raw Sunscale Salmon
14 raw nightfin Snapper
10 raw mithril head trout
9 oily Black mouth.
The time was between 22.00 and 23.00
So Sunscale salmon and Nightfin Snappers dosen't seem to care much about the time of the day.

what sucked was that it took me that time to get the quest fish :(
Time: 00:50 - 01:50
Skill: 249-267 +75+5
Total catch: 144 fishies
Redgill: 74 - 52%
Nightfin snapper: 42 - 29%
Mithril head trout: 15 - 10%
Oily Blackmouth: 13 - 9%

Also caught raw sunscale fish oily black mouth and a crap load of redgill fish, and some mithril fisi too.
drop rate sucks if you want to sell but for the Soup it is priceless.
Details:
5:15am-6:05am server

Anywhere where you catch the sunscale salmon during the day, you can catch the nightfins at night.
And Camp Mojache is also about a 1/4 catch.
