Intro
No matter how you slice it, grinding is the fastest way to level in WoW. Maybe not the most fun, but it is much faster than questing.

Now, I'd say the best time to start grinding wouldn't be right off - You can get to 35 very easily questing, but after that, it's more of a pain in the as.

There are various good places to grind, so there is some overlapping.

Unfortunately, this applies mostly to damage dealers of the melee variety. Mages and Warlocks may be able to use them, but I don't have as much experience with them.

Warning: Alot of these areas are densely packed with mobs, so you are likely to get adds when you first begin clearing. However, the denser they are, that means the more spawns in the shortest distance - Exactly what you want when grinding.

Levels might be off by the order of 1 or 2, as your grinding ability might be different than that of the classes I have played. I apologize if they are, but I'm fairly sure these spots are mostly accurate.

Grinding areas will only support one person. Any more, and it will be alot slower for EXP. If someone is at the spot you planned on using, try somewhere else. I've tried to provide a good spread of places to try at different levels, but if you can't find one, you might just have to try later
----------------------------

Preparing
If you're a melee class, I cannot stress the fact that first aid and food are godsends, and will reduce your downtime greatly. Love them. They are VERY useful.

You might also want to spend some money on +stat potions that last for an hour, as well as +hp regen. You're going to mostly be grinding on mobs that have good drops, so you'll have more to spend.

----------------------------
Grinding

34-37
Venture Co. Meteorologists at Lake N. in Stranglethorn Vale
I love these guys. I mentioned them in the gold guide, and I really do love them. They have good drops, and they die fast. Hunters can sometimes even take two on at a time, as they like to stay at range and use their lightning bolt attack. Sic a pet on one, and take out the other yourself. They don't always stay at range, however, so your milage may vary.

36-38
The Naga on the islands in Desolace have low armor, and there are casters in the mix. Be wary of the wandering sea giants, though. One will walk across the island every now and then, and they'll kill you if they sees you.

37-39
The Murlocs by Grom'Gol in STV are excellent grinding. They have, as per usual, low defense, and take alot of damage. Some casters mixed in the fray as well.

36-46
In the Badlands, there are ALOT of rock elementals. They range from about 37 to 42 or so, if I remember correctly. They're sort of close to the Horde base, so Alliance might be weary of the area. They die fast, and they have some pretty good vendor drops. Higher level ones spawn by the Ogres camp, and have a chance of spwaning Rumbler, a named rock elemental. There's also a few quests right by the lower ones, so some extra EXP is fun.

40-43
The Scalding Whelps in the Badlands are fun to grind. They're basicly casters, low def and HP, high damage. They also have a chance of dropping a a Tiny Black Whelpling, which can go for 20-50 gold on some servers in the AH, and are pretty cool pets regardless.

40-46
The Wastewander humans in Tanaris are great grinding for a large level range. They start off at level 40 and 41, and ramp up to 44 or so, and then you can move to the pirates, which range from 44-45 (Or is it 46?). Chests spawns are all over the place too, so you can get some phat lewt. My gold guide has more in depth information on their location.

42-45
The Naga in Stranglethorn Vale are pretty easy to kill, though there aren't any caster mobs mixed in. I personally don't like this one, but it is viable.

44-46
There are some more Naga on an island in Feralas, south of Feathermoon Stronghold or whatever. I've never been there personally, but I've heard good things about it. A named naga spawns at the top of one of the caves, 24 hour spawn.

45-48
Also in Feralas, there are some Yeti in the Feral Scare Vale. The normal ones are about level 45, and they ramp up to level 48 or so. Pretty good grinding, but the range of movement is sorta large.

46-48
The ghosts in Azshara are great. I love them. I can't stress how awesome they are. They drop insane mageweave and silver, and are absolutely excellent to kill. The Litchlings are casters, and die even faster than the Apprentices, which go down FAST. I absolutely love these. However, on my server, several 57+ gold farmers also camp them fairly actively :(

47-49
I've heard good things about the Dunemaul ogres in Tanaris, though I don't have much experience with the area.

47-49
I like elementals, and here are some more :). In the Searing Gorge Cauldron, and a little bit North of it, there are plenty to grind.

49-52
Deadwood Village in Felwood is decent grinding, and you can also use it to raise your Timbermaw faction. Not much I can say about it.

52-54
The Ogres in the Burning Steppes are pretty good. Same thing as with other ogres.

53-58
More ghosts! This time in Winterspring, on the frozen lake. I <3 these guys.

53-58
Running around in the Plaguelands killing undead. Raising Argent Dawn faction is a pain, so you might want to go ahead and do slightly slower grinding at the gain of being able to raise your faction at the same time. It's also possible to go to 60 doing this, but it's mind numbingly boring... But for some, the faction is worth it. You cannot gain faction from killing monsters when you are level 60, so if you plan on grinding them for the faction, you may really want to do this until 60

57-60
If you're a rogue, Blackrock Stronghold is the place to be. You will die a few times getting down a beat, but once you have the timing going well, you'll be dominating the area. Half the mobs there are casters, and the other half still have low armor compaired to most mobs of this level

End Notes
I'm sorry about the sparse information post 50, but by this time, you should have an idea of what to look for in a grinding mob.

Caster mobs, and mobs with low HP or defense in general are what you're after. If you see some around your level, go for it. Nothing to lose, except for maybe a bit of durability.

Some people like to grind beasts because they can be skinned - I don't have skinning as a trade, so I don't go for this, but feel free to submit them for the UC area.

I found Crystalvein Mine in Stranglethron Vale a good place to solo and grind in your 40's. Mobs are easy and have a decent agro range so seldom do you get adds. The chest pops every round seems like and there is a named that pops. Nice drops. Mobs range from 41 to 44 and the named is 45 (but is a piece of cake). I am a druid with below average skills (lol) and it was easy for me.

At Level 53-55 I found the ogres/giants outside of Dire Maul instances great. Absolutely noone was there so I had the entire place to myself. I just kept going up and down the halls killing everything.

Notes on grinding for Leatherwrking/Skinning

30-40 Yeti cave near Tarren Mill - TONS of leather from here, i mean TONS.
30-40 Badlands - coyotes, elementals (i know not skinning but drop a good rate of Deeprock salt), vultures, Black Whelps

40-50 STV - Raptors, crocs, gorillas, tigers, panthers - good leather, and shadow pelt from the panthers which sells very well imho.

50-58 Hinterlands - Turtles easy! Heaps o scale, leather, some good pearls.

Once I hit the OL, skinning there drove my lvl to 325 very quickly.
I also went to Winterspring late (60) and love the Yetis, the CHimeras, the bears and Frostsabers - all great!

That my 2 bits.

I personally like grinding, it hones your offensive skills to a fine point so when you really need them in a group you are ready for anything. But what about the ogres in Tanaris? there is a line of them starting from a small mountain near the bug zone all the way to the end of the dunemaul compound. This is directly across from the boss ogre in the cave...anyways for 45-48 you can just cruise down the line and by the time you get done with the end the top has respawned again. Constant grind, TONS of mageweave and silver drops and an occasional green drop. I pulled 300 mageweave out of here in 1 day and made 2 levels in a very short time. my 2 cents.....

heres a tip i found for grinding, even if you have the worlds suckiest armor (i certinally do)any time you go to ah check out the weapons that are there even the ones 1-2 lvs above you and look for the absolute BEST one you can use or are close to being able to use, this does two major things for you.
1.kill things faster (duh)
2. take less damage, allowing you to have less armor allowing you to put your money back into a better weapon, and by takeing less damage you have less down time and allowing you to get back to killing things faster.

oh, another tip i use is to browse ah for CHEAP lower potions, they cost next to nothing, but over the long run that little bit adds up quick.

hope that helped all of you grind a bit more effectivley

I've tried to grind characters before. Yeah it is almost as efficient as questing, but it's completely boring. I've sat in one area killing the same mob for 4 hours straight just to get a level. I've found that even if it isn't faster to quest, that questing is more enjoyable. The second time I leveled to 70 I used a very nice leveling guide. I was never bored or felt like I was wasting time. It was a breeze to 70.

For anyone interested in it there are two different versions available.

I'm a level 55 hunter, and I had a question about grinding undead in the plaguelands. (west, right now)

I find the mobs to be pretty easy, I can kill them easily and do a couple hours at a stretch without dying and they are pretty closely packed. But the experience doesn't seem to be that great to me. Plus, they have many annoying characteristics - many of them put slow or disease on you or your pet, many heal themselves, etc.

The XP is fast enough for me to stomach, for now, but people I've talked to have told me that Argent Dawn faction is worthless anymore because there's better stuff in the Outland. Is this true?

Some here seem to like the Naga in Feralas, but having just tried it, I can't recommend for casters. There is every time-wasting feature you want to avoid when you grind for xp -

*relatively high damage
*relatively high health
*warriors throw nets, which aside from wasting time removes aggro from your pet
*spellcasters toss cold spells that slow you down (and since there are ONLY warriors and spellcasters, they ALL slow you down
*they're difficult to get to (for Horde at least), unless there's a back door I don't know about
*some areas they're tightly packed, others you have to run a bit to find one

I just grinded on them (lvl 46 undead lock), then went back to the Yeti, and according to Titan (and my own common sense), the Yeti won hands down. Stay there if you're a caster.

Excellent overall guide though.

I would also add the Hinterlands for 46-49... not only is there good grinding, but there are a LOT of grinding quests in Revantusk Village that, added together, should keep you at about 25K - 30K per hour.

* 47-48 wolves are at the top of the cliffs over Revantusk and scattered throughout the rest of the area and will keep you in Tender Wolf Steaks, which give a +12 bonus to Stamina and Spirit - pick up the grinding quest for these at Revantusk. They're mostly stealthed, but you generally won't have trouble running into them.

* The trolls along the river and at the Altar of Zul spawn quickly, but again, make sure you get the Cannabalistic Cousins and Vilebranch Hooligans quests for max xp. These also drop a lot of Mageweave and Wildvine. East of the Altar is where you'll find the Witherbark Trolls for the Grim Message quest from Grom Gol (skulls on a pike).

* Owl Beasts (another grind quest) are scattered throughout, and drop more good food, Large Eggs (also used for the cooking quest in Tanaris).

* Snapjaws near Revantusk (generally 49-50, and another grinding quest) drop lots of vendor trash, turtle meat, zesty clam meat (also used for the Tanaris cooking quest) and a few pearls. There is also a quest to kill the elite Snapjaw, Gammerita.

++UPDATE++

I just tried the ghosts in Azshara, just north of the bridge. I can't say I like it as a lock, though this guide speaks highly of them for those who engage in diret melee. The Lichlings cast Frostbolt, and the others (Apprentices?) cast Fear (!!). Maybe this is good for a class that can keep them in stunlock, but the trolls in The Hinterlands put out just as much Mageweave and silver, and the casters don't hit you with anything that really slows you down, so if you're a caster, you might want to try there.

another way is too follow the road north, at one point a murlock is standing next to the road, just swing off the road there and you should walk more or less into the same valey from the other side. most ppl who dont have the patience to wait untl proper needed lvl to enter a new zone, knows where this anoying murloc is.

i liked this guide. very helpful.

a few things i think is important to mention, grinding is all about fast kills with as little downtime as possible. having some experience with mage and as the author of this guide says he has not, i can add that i have found the varius turtles good grinding, they have too much armor for melee class, but caster class takes those easy, and they drop lots of vendor trash that makes lots of gold. empty your bags for anything you dont need, pick up everything the mobs drops, even the grey items, they often gives good price at vendors.
(edit) reason that i find turtles good going when grinding is for the most part they are yellow mobs, non-hostile until attacked, this reduces the multiple mob factor.

Buffs:
also, downtime and so on, those scrolls of agi/sta/spi/str/int are sold from varius vendors for a couple of silvers, that is very cheap extra help in your grinding, buy them whenever you can. food with buffs are good too, the low skill food often gives +sta and +spi, very useful.

if you got a gatherer prof, like mining or herb. finding a place where it spawns one of those to gain skill points is something to think about.

Dying:
it happens, sticky situations like multiple mobs. if you think your going to die and still have close to full health, run. if healt is low, you'll die even if you run (ofc you can get lucky), try take one mob with you before you die instead of running, cuz their health will be full when you return, and you have to start all over. one more mob, a bit more xp. (for mages, nova-blink ftw :D )

i hope the author of this guide takes no offence in me making these adds, cuz the guide is excelent, just wanna give some of my experience. and btw, i realy hate grinding

It seems unlikely to me that he can back up his claim; if his method is quicker then of course he or another grinder will hold the record for fast leveling. One may certainly also say that questing is much quicker than grinding if you don't go through the game rested, so you can definitely get through using questing in a quicker amount of real time (as opposed to game playing time).

once u get closer to that 50 mark tho, switch to the thistleshubs in teh SW part of Tanaris. they're spaced pretty far so u only face one at atime unless u move into another. the thistleshrub drop a wide range of herbs used for different professions, heart of the wild, different blooms (firebloom for ex),etc.

for essentially yur 40-50 period Tanaris shud be yur mark, the Wastewander guys, then the ogres, then the thistleshrub. (although the thistleshrub end up being far from Gadget making it not the most ideal grinding area)

It gets really boring, so you will want to take breaks in the middle, which is why it is better to start early. If your a mage, lucky you. You can kill like 10 of these guys at once. Very few green drops, but I made almost 7g off just the grey stuff for only about 3 hours grinding. I basically killed my way through the zone from the Alliance FP in the West (not sure of the name) through the valley, through Shimmering flats (some good grinding-type quests there, too) on to Gadgetzan.

Plus, most of the mobs are skinnable and iron ore is all over the place. I found several silver and gold ore too.
GREAT!!!

This is a great reference guide for grinding and leveling.

In your 40-43 categorie you mention the Scalding Whelps. They are GREAT to grind and have relativly good drops. But go to their Allakhazam page. What do you see? #9 MOST KILLED MOB IN WoW!?!?! Yep. They're popular. So the smaller the downtime the better, because I've heard people race eachother to get these things.

The welps in Badlands are fantastic grinding for a rogue, as basically they don't really hurt you as you can keep their nukes silenced with a kick or two. I have been killing them on and off since I was level 39 and they skin for Thick Leather as well as a chance of a welp pet drop (had two drop now !). I'm level 45 now and there is no downtime at all on these mobs, even when taking on two at a time I never have to rest to take on the next one after the previous two have died. Given that the welps are 42-43 you get good xp as well as very very fast kills. Also for those who like comedy food, you get lots of small flame sacs which when combined with mystery meat from the carrion in Badlands gives you the fantastic Dragonbreath Chilli where you belch flame at mobs every so often.

Also as a rogue consider ambushing the gorilla's in STV , they are around the level 37 mark but can be ambushed for 850-950 which makes a very quick kill indeed even if you are a level or two lower than them.

First, just want to say thanks for the great guide...though I've had some disagreement with it occasionally, it has been very helpful in pointing me in the right direction. Anyway...I think there are a few things that should be added about those ghosts in Azshara (46-48).

1) The level range is, in my experience, a bit high. I've taken a 44th level hunter with only moderately good gear out there and been just fine - in short, give it a try.

2) There are satyrs right nearby with almost identical levels and drops, and only a few more melee-types in the mix.

3) The GIANT! There is a 53rd level elite giant that sometimes wanders the area between the undead and the satyrs...close enough that if you are on the edges of either spawn, he may attack.

4) Varo'then's Ghost...a named 48th that appears in three places off and on in the undead spawn. He's tough, but not an elite, and almost ALWAYS drops a 40+ level green. When I was there, he'd spawn about 3-5 times in close succession, then disappear for several hours. He looks like one of the lichlings, but blue instead of green.

5) Chtulhu isn't joking...mageweave drops are awesome, and the silver's nothing to sneeze at either. I also picked up 5 14-slot bags (Journeyman's Backpacks) as loot.

Edit to add:

There's another great spot for about 38-44 - just south of the Horde camp in Feralas are large numbers of gnolls. Two basic "types" of spawn here - first ones you run through are high 30's, hunters and melee. Tough, but decent XP and don't die too slowly. Further south are mobs of mixed melee & casters, 40-44; the melee aren't too tough, and the casters go down fast...I was grinding them all the way to 44th. They drop decent silver and silk/mageweave (about 40%/60%), plus the occasional green. Horde should really consider this one - they have a base right nearby, plus I know they have quests there and some nearby as well.

If you have a friend about the same level as you I recommend grinding together.

Yes, you get half the experience, but you also kill in half the time. And you can grind constantly without needing to take health/mana breaks. Also you can take on 3 mobs at a time (if you want).

It's a lot more social, so the time flies when grinding with a friend :) You also become less of a "freekill" target when playing on PVP servers.

Faction gain for Argent Dawn is still possible at 60. You can grind those mobs from Neutral until Honored if I'm correct. At Honored, you can only get faction off Elite mobs in Scholo or Strat and at Revered only bosses + Scourge stones.

Another GREAT grinding spot, especially for horde is the shore next to Revantusk Village in Hinterlands. These are lvl 49 and 50 turtles and since they are critters zero aggro. Junk drops include scales that stack in 5's and vendor for 45s a stack. Also if you're a skinner you'll get piles of turtle scales and thick/rugged leather. All-in-all one of the best spots out there and if you're lucky/smart enough to be horde the base is right next door for fast repairs.

A quick note for rogues grinding in Deadwood village.

Mind-Numbing poison is your friend here, that may sound dumb because there arent any caster mobs really... but that curse of deadwood is a bitch, doubles your downtime, and if you use mind-numbing you'll have enough time to regenerate enough energy to kick them while theyre casting it.

I'd like to add my .02 a great place I found for EASY grinding at level 35 was bolderfist hall in the Arathi highlands, if you are a herbalist like me that area here with the orge have great respawn spots for wild steelbloom and goldthorn which fetch a pretty penny at the ah.

Plus the orges are your level so you receive good xp along with lots of silver, silk cloth and the occasional green drop.

A level 42 in the Swamp of Sorrows can take all the dragonkin around the Temple of Atal'Hakkar except - obviously - Somnus, who is easily avoided. I took my human warlock from 42 to 47 here and never had to stop for mana more often than every 3-4 mobs. They don't seem to drop more than silver and the occasional chunk of meat, but they skin for worn dragonscales, green dragonscales, and multiple thick/heavy leather/hides. Bonus of being about three feet from your FP if you're Horde, too. Cash, exp, and cool-looking mobs to fight, ftw!

I personally can take only so much grinding. I tend to grind only when I’m between quest areas due to my level. I can often find myself in this situation as I usually solo, thus rarely doing the hardest quests that require groups or doing instances. To me the game is all about the journey, not reaching the end. It’s rather like reading a book. It would be faster to jump to the last chapter of the story, but it’s more fun to read the entire book.

For those who can take only so much grinding at a time, I’d like to add some general advice. If I’m going to spend time grinding I want more out of it than just XP. I suggest you look at what else you want out of the game and look for appropriate mobs to grind to get it. If you need reputation with a certain group try to find mobs that will get you that rep as you grind. Do you have skinning? Try to find beasts or mobs like worgen and yeti to kill. Do you need cloth? Seek out those humanoids. Do you have mining? Kill mobs in areas that can also spawn mineral nodes. When I have a secondary goal, I find grinding to be a bit less tedious.

If you are lucky, you may be able to kill two murlocs with one arrow, so to speak. Need iron and/or mithril? The ogres above Southshore, mid to upper 30s I believe, have such nodes spawning all around them and in their cave. Plus they drop silk cloth and coins. Or, if you have mining and skinning, the yeti right next door to the ogres also have mineral nodes spawning around them. The undead in any of the fields in Western Plague Lands are great for rogues. They provide XP, coins, cloth, reputation drops and if a rogue pick pockets them first they can “drop” lock boxes that can take lock picking all the way to 300.

Scarlet Monastery has to be mentioned. I know this isn't the best place for solo grinding because hp's are high throughout, but with a party of two + a healer you can get 70-80k in a short couple hours with insane drops. I was throwing out anything not green, cause the green and blue drops in here seem to be about every 5-6 mobs! Remember to pull far and you won't wipe once. Great place for small parties and getting gold for your mount.
